-Unless Rumple has hacking skills, it is impossible for him to pose an Oxford University professor. Staff at universities always use their university email address which shows clearly where they work (for example, [email protected]). There is no way Rumple could have faked this kind of email address to convince Belle that he was an OU professor, seeing as we have never explicitly seen him with this kind of computer skills.
I don’t know why a Professor at Oxford being able to read a magical language about hats and darkness didn’t raise ALL THE FLAGS for Belle. I mean, of course that’s Rumple. It makes no sense for someone from our world to be able to translate a language from another world that quickly.
Yup, this as well.
It wasn’t made clear, but I had assumed that although the incantation itself was not from our world, that it was written in a language from our world, placed there by Rumple. I know I am reaching, but I think it is a fairly reasonable assumption.
I also found it strange that Belle did not run a background search on the email address and the ”professor” via google. I know that they have been stuck in SB for ages, but they still have access to the internet, right? Maybe the characters are still learning about how our world works outside of SB and therefore what they can and can’t do on the internet, (or what they can or can’t search for on the internet).
This is the sort of thing that should be made clear on the show. If they just had one arc for 22 episodes, there would be time to explain things properly instead of creating situations that look like plotholes.

– the twist about Emma having the greatest potential for evil
– Cruella and Ursula not leaving Mal to die
– sorcerer and the author not being the same person (I’m betting one is Lily)
– the hints that Snow and Charming may have done something unspeakable in the EF
– Chernabog cgi not too badDisliked;
– everyone’s willingness to trust Rumple despite ample reasons not to
– Hook’s whinny attitude
– Chernabog being rewritten to make him nothing more than a glorified guard-dog
– Ursula being used as a grabbing device…???
– terrible dialogue in some parts
– bad acting in some scenes"so there’s this new show….."

Agreed. It’s sloppy but convenient which is how ONCE operates during the 11 episode arc structure. There is a lot of convenient “don’t think about it too hard” things going on…like the 3 villains entering with a phone call.

Yeah I think she’s the Sorceress and is being set up as a sort of anti-savior

Well I notice the rock the box was sitting on had a bunch of runes inscribed on it so that may mean something. The way I am choosing to see it is that the ritual site had to be set uder the sun at a certain time of day when the planets were aligned on a certain special magical rock and Regina had to utter an incantation inside her head whist doing a cetain magical movement which required a lot of magical power to do. Which actually may be the case as Regina does look drained after the fairies are released.

That’s my guess. Either the incantation was in Latin, which is common for spells, or it was in runes like the scroll.
March 2, 2015 at 1:14 pm #297307SlurpeezParticipantThings I liked:
– I liked Cruella in the present-day. She’s going to give Regina a run for her money when it comes to sassy zingers.
– I enjoyed Emma and Regina teaming up. They have excellent banter.
– Present-day Rumpel in his bathrobe regalia eating noodles from a styrofoam container was excellent. He can still get the better of people even without magic; reminded me of Mr. Gold in S1. His transition from limping Rumpel to strutting Rumpel as he crossed the town line was impressive.
-Sneaky fairy is sneaky. She so does know who the author is. She’s lied before….
-Snow and Charming finally have something relevant to do to the actual progression of the story. (Let’s just hope it’s not to do with another hidden family member).Things I really want to know:
– What does Hook do? Everyone seems to have an occupation of some sort except for him. Unless Hook has taken an official position as a library assistant, it remains to be shown what he does, how he pays for things, or where he lives. Why doesn’t he go get a job down at the wharf as a fisherman?
– What was it like inside of that hat? Whose hat is it?
– Just what is Will Scarlet up to now, and what the heck happened to Anastasia?
– What else does the Blue Fairy really know but isn’t telling?Things I could do without:
-Demons. That mythology just doesn’t belong in my book. I know Chernabog is part of Fantasia, but I never liked that bit as a kid anyway.
– Cruella’s stank breath and Ursula’s creepy, single, tentacle.
– Hook continuing to conceal the fact that he provoked Rumple first, by his failed attempt at blackmail. Hook is playing on Belle’s sympathy, despite the fact she’s his former victim.
– Rumple taking Belle for a fool, again. That relationship is well and truly on the rocks. Just wait until Belle learns she was duped by Rumple, again.
– Emma’s “superpower” since it failed to alert her to danger when it matters most. Charming and Snow showed a surprising amount of sound reasoning in not trusting confirmed villains, but Emma just had to be her stubborn, sometimes headlong self and listen to Regina, who also has difficulty with impulse-control.
-Making Emma have a dark heart in order to make the villains look comparatively less villainous–predictable and boring, since Emma won’t actually turn bad in the end."That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. March 2, 2015 at 2:12 pm #297312PriceofMagicParticipantI quite enjoyed this episode overall and the negatives are minor.
Favourite:
Rumple- I loved Rumple this episode. He’s back with a purpose. He was snarky, he was vulnerable, he’s showing all the traits that pre-4A Rumple had. Loved the ramen noodle scene and when Rumple crosses back over the town line. I also like his dynamic with Ursula and Cruella, especially Ursula when he is crashing at her place.
Ursula- I’m liking Ursula quite a bit and hope she survives the season.
Cruella- I like Cruella’s sass. Her breath power was okay on the bugs but a bit odd on the dogs so I think it all depends on the angle. I like the fact that she’s been living as a wealthy housewife in Long Island.
Mixed:
Ursula complains she’s not made of money yet has tanks of tropical fish. That isn’t cheap to maintain.
Cruella’s accent is laughable when she is ranting at Rumple in flashback. Cruella can’t do long sentences without sounding extremely odd. Also nobody noticed that a woman called Cruella has the same exact hairstyle as the woman from 101 Dalmations. Considering Disney Mulan is canon in show, any movie before it should be canon as well.
The Hook and Belle friendship- I didn’t hate it, however I think we need to see the build up of how Hook and Belle got to that stage. Obviously there’s been a 6 week time jump and Belle is quite a forgiving person but it is a bit odd to see those two so chummy when there has been no set up. I did like how Hook told Belle that despite Rumple’s faults, he did genuinely love her. That was a nice moment from Hook because he didn’t necessarily have to tell her that but did any way.
Least:
Nobody noticing Chernabog coming out the hat- Seriously?
Chernabog’s CGI- Not the best the show has had but not the worst.
Snow labelling Rumple as “evil”- Didn’t stop you running to him every time you wanted his help, did it, Snow?
The retcon that Rumple didn’t create the dark curse but only procured it- Probably my biggest complaint about the episode. We’ve been led to believe that Rumple created the curse and there is evidence in-show that he did so why the sudden retcon?
All magic comes with a price!

March 2, 2015 at 8:28 pm #297361timespacerParticipantI really liked the opening sequence showing everyone going about their business in Storybrooke. It reminded me of the opening of the second episode of the first season in which we saw a similar montage set to music, along with the clock reading 8:15, of course.
My favorite scene was Rumple changing his clothes and discarding his cane as hewalked across the town line, especially after seeing him so helpless before Cruella and Ursula at the town line.
I also liked Rumple’s use of the computer. I disagree with the assumption that he couldn’t fake the email address. The “From” label in email addresses is not verified by the mail protocol. That makes it trivial to fake the sender of an email – that’s why there are so many phishing emails. We know that Mr. Gold was adept at “working the system” for 28 years in Storybrooke so I’m sure he would be able to handle such an easy task. Providing fake web pages for Belle to find in her searches would take a bit more effort but it’s still not that hard.
I’m really intrigued by the idea that Emma has the potential for the darkest heart. Perhaps there is some property of being the Savior that gives her both the greatest possibility for good and the greatest possibility for darkness.
My biggest dislike is not really specific to this episode but is a dislike from the first half of the season that still wasn’t addressed in this episode. I really disliked Rumple’s sudden 180 degree reversal to evil after he sacrificed himself so willingly in season 3. To be fair, I can see how the combined experience of losing Bae and being a slave to Zelena could have made him more determined to free himself from the dagger but they never *showed* us any of those character changes; we shouldn’t have to guess. I’m assuming it was just a matter of not having enough time and maybe now they will show us that. I also try to remember that we don’t know Rumples’s real plan, beyond the fact that he wanted back into Storybrooke. Much of what he told Cruella and Ursula may have been lies (as usual.)March 3, 2015 at 5:38 am #297374onceaholicParticipantAnother thing…
Regina/Emma had that scroll thing the whole time?
So Regina could have given RH that scroll, shown RH on the map she gave him the road he needs to get back to the SB town line, then mark the edge of it with some sexy knickers of hers so he could be sure he was at the right place?
Also, good to suddenly know that mobile phone microwaves can cross magical barriers, too. In fact, they probably knew that already…they must have used more than just ordinary telephone lines to contact the outside world just before Regina’s curse was broken.
So I guess Regina didn’t have a spare mobile phone to give to Robin????
What a load of teenage angst over nothing.
Girl really needs to get that scroll back off the QoD. It might come in handy again. (Can’t believe they didn’t do that as they crossed over the first time…probably because Rumple would never fit in the trunk/boot of the car for some reason so Adam and Eddy had them cross back over the line to go and get him).
Speaking of Adam and Eddy….
Perhaps Adam is the ”author” and he will make a cameo as himself at the end of the show, heehee.
Hmmm…that secret Snowing are holding are really bugging me….what could they be hiding that is so terrible?
I don’t know but whatever it is, it can’t be that bad otherwise both Snow and Charming would have black spots on their hearts from before Regina cast the dark curse. If it is bad enough to cause dark spots, then could we say that Snow’s dark spot was not from killing Cora but from this secret, or that killing Cora made the dark spot bigger? How about about Charming, we did not see any dark spots on his heart when Regina used it for the second dark curse. Are we meant to believe that Snowing redeemed themselves in NL to the point where the dark spots had gone and they were able to cross through the door to meet Glinda (assuming that in the case of Snow it wasn’t the baby that allowed Snow to cross???)
