October 19, 2014 at 9:31 pm #286211RumplesGirlKeymasterOut of a possible 10, I am giving this episode a 4.5. There were some good moments but on the whole I really didn’t like it. I found some of the logic and actions of several of the characters to be off putting and bizarre. I also think that when they take an episode “off” like this one–meaning that everyone suddenly stops looking for the Big Bad for no reason–it’s weird and I focus too much on wondering why there is no one looking for the Snow Queen.
It was clear from the start that I wasn’t going to enjoy this episode, and I’m not going to apologize for that. We all like different things, guys. However, I will try to keep my heavy criticizes elsewhere
What I Liked
–The opening scene was really cool and intriguing.
—Sven and the Walking Broomstick. Those two can go have a spin off. I’ll watch.
–The short scene between Henry and Regina was cute.
Mixed Liked and Disliked
–Will Scarlet. Is he just going to be a funny guy? His story so far is getting drunk and being a thief. I want more of him. But he is quite comical.
–Rumple and Hook. On the one hand, I loved the final conversation between the two. On the other hand, I am incredibly weary of them destroying Rumple’s character and turning him into the ultimate evil or something else ridiculous after he’s done many heroic (and yes gray) things. The writers clearly don’t know what they are doing with him, so they are reverting to making him just “The Dark One.”
–The flashbacks were both fine and not. It’s really starting to annoy me that they are shoehorning in the Frozen cast every single episode. This is the fourth episode and the fourth flashback to feature at least one Frozen crew member. We get it. Frozen is big and = money. But take a break from it in the flashbacks just once.
Disliked
–Emma’s outfit. Don’t get me wrong. Jennifer Morrison looked good but that was NOT an Emma Swan dress. That was something Emma Swan would never wear on a date. Look at the Pilot and 312 for evidence. Emma’s not a girly girl. She doesn’t dress in lace and frippery. She likes tight jeans and plaids and boots. She looked like something out of the 1950s and Hook was the reformed bad boy in leather. I half expected them to burst into some cliche song halfway through.
–Hook wanting his hand back. Apparently only people with all their limbs can love properly. It’s rather insulting to people with disabilities, IMO
–Belle got one line. One. They keep promising more of her and then she only gets a few lines or is made to look like an idiot.
–Rumple still lying to Belle. It’s like the writers want me to stop shipping them.
–I can’t even begin to describe how angry I am and that Henry is going to work for Rumple under the false pretense of Neal. It has nothing to do with Neal. Nothing at all. He is playing Rumple and using the Neal card to do it. It leave a horrible taste in my mouth.
–Emma Swan is the worst sheriff known to man. So first she lets the criminal get away because she’s got her own personal stuff and doesn’t even call David to have him hunt down Will. THEN she decides that she is going to leave Will in jail because he interrupted her date. That’s not how the law works Emma.
–Snow and Charming waiting up. Dear lord. She’s 30. She has a 13yr old son. That was just….weird. And frankly Snow is coming off as a one of those overly possessive mother who is clingy and somewhat annoying. Which is just insulting to how amazing she was in S1.

– Seeing Zoso at the beginning of the episode. It was a nice throwback.
– The Apprentice turning into a mouse was an amusing shout out to the Disney Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
– The magical broomstick.
– The date between Emma and Hook was fun.
– Anna getting the best of Rumple. She came off as naive in the beginning, but when the situation arose towards the end, she used her wits. When Rumple normally has the upper hand, it’s nice to see him thwarted for once.Mixed
– The Rumple and Hook subplot. On the one hand it’s fun to see these two refuel their old feud, but on the other hand Rumple is coming across as too self centered and Hook acted a bit too stupid in the way he was trying to make deals with him.
– Henry becoming Rumple’s apprentice. It’s nice to see Grandpastiltskin bonding, but he’s doing so in order to spy on Rumple for Regina. Hopefully the experience still ends up with the two getting closer and getting to know each other more.Disliked
– Not enough Snow Queen. This felt like an episode to stall the main story arc of this half of the Season.
– The hint that Anastasia/Red Queen might be dead, based on Will’s expression at the drawing of her. Considering she was revived by Nyx’s water because “it wasn’t her time”, and the fact that Wonderland’s epilogue has Alice explain to her daughter that the two are happily ruling Wonderland together as the White King and Queen, killing her off doesn’t add up. If she’s dead, what was the point of Nyx reviving her because “the White Queen was meant to move on” if she were to only die a few years later? The optimism in me is hoping she’s still alive and their separation is only temporary, but this is still a cause for alarm for the time being.Disliked
Obviously this probably won’t change your opinion, but Jennifer Morrison did give a pretty thorough explanation for the style in dress via this article:
“This is the first time that Emma is wearing something that’s softer and gentler and sweeter and romantic. To me, that was really important, because I wanted it to be symbolic of something very different than the other times we’ve seen her on a date. We’ve seen her with the guy who was a perpetrator that she was after and that was a ruse, that was her just playing a character in order to catch this guy. So she sorta played the stereotypical ‘date’ look. And then we saw her on a date Walsh when she was in New York and she was still having to make her own way and she was a single mom and she was into black leather there’s something still kinda tough and edgy about that. And now, she really likes this guy and she’s very genuine about it and it needs to be something that she found in Storybrooke, because she wouldn’t have had something like that in her wardrobe, so it needs to look like it could have come from Storybrooke, but it also needs to look like something that she feels comfortable in. It’s definitely the softest, most romantic side of her and the fact that she feels safe enough and inspired to express that part of herself to him, I think was a really important thing to show.”
October 20, 2014 at 12:54 am #286316schaendlichParticipantEpisode Note: Anyone else believe that Rumpel is probably going to die? It seems like he’s gotten worse and worse.
Favorite:
I never knew how much I missed the old imp. Good to see him, I say. Not so good to see him bleed over into present-day, but it’s good to see the past imp.
I find it hilarious that Hook seems to have dismembered his trench coat, and made a vest and jacket. I’m imagining him sitting in a little room, trying to figure out how to use a sewing machine.
Lady and the Tramp reference!
Rip Van Winkle reference!
Rumpel’s clever scheme with Ana. It was fun to watch he play into his hands.
Still liking Will.
Regina seems to be actually trying to help Marian.
Middle Feels:
As much as I hate how he used it, Rumpel’s hand trick is clever. Watching Hook play into Rumpel’s hands was even more fun because I honestly didn’t immediately know how he was going to get him. On the same note, I do not agree with him using this as an opportunity to get out of his promise to Belle and Bae. Also, Hook had a good point. He has changed, but Rumpel seems to be reverting. So, watching Rumpel use Hook to drag him back down too, is kinda messed up.
Least Favorite:
Where’s that whole redemption thing that Rumpel’s supposed to be having? I am ever patiently waiting for Belle to rip him a new one.
Henry making someone rewrite time? He doesn’t even know what Regina is talking about. Regina didn’t read that she dies alone with 500 cats or something. She read that she didn’t get the guy. Henry is just going along with it, no questions asked. I dislike this because he’s shown that he’s too smart for this. I feel like if he knew the full story, he’d at least try to think a bit more.
Also, pretending to get close to your grandpa because of your dead dad? Really? Are all of the remaining Stiltskins going to be surprise!evil (or in Rumpel’s case, re!evil) this season? Heck, Belle’s never around. Who’s knows, maybe she’s going around being a jerk for no good reason, too?
It gets difficult to feel sorry for people who don’t read a contract. I didn’t feel sorry for Ana or anyone else who met a terrible fate due to not reading the contract of a scaly, lizard-eyed man with a giggle. Ana is wrong. He doesn’t take love and make it a weapon. He takes human greed/stupidity/laziness and makes it useful.
I still find the idea that loving someone else cancels out your true love for another to be b.s.
October 20, 2014 at 11:25 am #286383PriceofMagicParticipantFavourite:
Rumple to Anna: “But why? We had a deal”- I just found the expression on Rumple’s face and the tone of his voice hilarious.
Rumple turning the tables on Hook- It was about time Hook got a taste of his own medicine and it was great to see how clever and manipulative Rumple can actually be. I also liked how Rumple’s reasoning for taking Hook down a peg or two was because Hook had threatened Belle rather than being 100% self-serving. Hook needed to learn that he couldn’t just cause Belle great upset to get one over on Rumple.
Will and the picture of the Red Queen- Anastasia is still very much on Will’s mind, it’s nice that they haven’t forgotten her.
Hook missing the dartboard- It was a small moment but I liked it.
Mixed:
Emma’s dress- It looked better in motion than it did in the promo pics. I liked it more when she had Hook’s leather jacket over the top because it just felt more “Emma”. Maybe all she needed really was any jacket over the top just to make it a little less girly and more Emma style.
The CS date- Emma saying she doesn’t “pillage and plunder on the first date” She might not pillage and plunder but she breaks and enters aka Emma and Neal’s date at the carousel. I didn’t dislike the CS date but I wouldn’t rank it in my favourite moments because I just found Emma’s behaviour during the date a bit too much on the soppy side. I know she’s “letting her walls down” and all that jazz but I just think Emma should be a bit more livewire.
Snowing waiting up- I liked how Charming was all “I don’t want to know all the details” but I found Snow to be really annoying. She’s too clingy and she’s going to give baby Nemo issues if she doesn’t learn to back off a bit.
Least Favourite:
Has definitely got to be Henry lying to Rumple- What’s worse than Henry only pretending to want to spend time with his grandparents that aren’t Snowing for a mission which in itself is quite a horrible thing to do is that he used the Neal card against Rumple. Also when will Henry and Regina get it through their thick heads that the book doesn’t write the future, it only documents the past? Regina’s done terrible things and now is all “Why don’t I get a happy ending?” Regina made her bed, now she’s lying in it. Tough luck. But seriously Henry using his dead dad as an emotional ploy was just low.
The whole “Marian can’t be unfrozen because Robin loves you”- When will the charaters realise an act of true love doesn’t have to be a TLK?
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixOctober 20, 2014 at 12:48 pm #286398KebParticipantThis is a tricky episode…I really enjoyed it and some of the twists were pretty epic by the end. But it hasn’t corrected most of my fears for this season’s direction with regards to the regular characters’ development.
Favorite stuff:
Rumple referring to Belle as the “only light in my life.” I love that callback to his line in 122 when he said she was a brief flicker of light in an ocean of darkness. He’s still drowning in the darkness, but she’s still his light. (And he’s screwing it up royally, stop it you stupid sexy imp.) Oh, and he was bringing her flowers! Blue ones!
Will clutching the picture of Anastasia. Just the way that played out brought me to the brink of tears. PLEASE let her be okay. (I’m not happy if she’s not going to be okay, but that bit was beautiful and well played.)
Belle actually having a spoken line! And being in her library! (I’m grasping here. I’m desperate. I think she almost had more screentime when she GOT FREAKIN LEFT BEHIND FOR HALF A SEASON.)
Hook having some interesting conflict. I actually do like your character (and adore Colin), Hook, I just wish you’d leave Bae’s family alone. Jeez.
The apprentice being turned into a mouse. Just as the snow queen is forever DQ to me, he is now forever Mickey, even if they deny it outright. It was a glorious moment.
The broom. It made me giggle. (I do enjoy the camp in Once a lot sometimes.)
Henry plotting to spend time with Grandpastiltskin. (But see least favorite bits: I like this because there’s a chance, half a chance, that he might actually SAY A WORD to his new grandma Belle, which he hasn’t done in three whole seasons, and he might actually have a scene where he talks to Rumple here or there and the two of them are awesome in the rare moments they’re together. So I like this as a setup for more Henry time with the Stiltskin side of his family.)
The hat actually having a purpose finally. A scary dark (and pretty, I think it’s my favorite bit of CGI outside of the Dark Castle yet) purpose but still. It does explain both why Rumple desperately needs the real dagger and why he’s been willing to deceive Belle.
Rumple being sneaky and making deals. Gah, I missed his dealmaking so much. (But also, see dislikes.)
Anna outwitting Rumple with the dagger. That was a beautiful moment.
Sven being Sven. And I’ve fallen for Kristoff badly (I didn’t like him nearly so much in the animated film, actually.)
Least fave:
The date. Gah. Gah. Gah. Just…it was so meh, Emma felt so OOC (I get she’s supposed to be changing but she didn’t feel like Emma, or even like a protagonist–it really felt like Once Upon a Hook tonight). And while I love Daddy Charming to bits, and couldn’t help laughing, Snow’s acceptance of Hook for Emma after everything she has witnessed with Hook (who, you know, left them for dead, tried to help Cora kill them, etc etc etc…) and her cheerleading for Swanfire in S3 just felt wrong and also OOC. (Her excitement for the date made sense and was fun, it’s just her embrace of Hook felt wrong.)
Henry pushing Emma to date Hook. His father’s been gone what, a week, maybe two? (I know, I do the timeline, but A&E don’t really care about the accuracy here so in their heads maybe it’s been a day since Elsa came but a season since Neal died…) Also, while Hook’s spent every second with Henry since New York Serenade trying to win the kid over (and Henry never saw most of the “bad” Hook days in S2), I’m glad Henry phrased it the way he did–he’s not sure he’s okay with it, but wants his moms happy.
Which leads to Regina. Okay, Henry’s perceptive, he gets what they’re getting at but OMG Outlaw Queen is SO messed up right now. I can’t think of a single way to salvage it without it being horrible. And if Henry decides that to fix it the book should be written so Regina gets Robin, I will throw things.
And using Neal as an excuse to outmanipulate the master manipulator? No thanks. If Henry’s desire is in the least bit genuine, I’ll forgive it (especially if it leads to a) Henry-Belle bonding and LOTS of screentime for Belle–she DOES like books, you know, bring her in on Operation Mongoose, b) epic Henry-Rumple bonding where Henry & Rumple get more screentime together than Hook & Rumple for a few eps at least, or c) Henry releasing a universe of mages from the hat so that they’re spilling out of Gold’s shop and wandering around Storybrooke befuddled. Because that at least would be funny.). If it’s just an excuse and Henry suddenly doesn’t care a bit about his dad (when we know he did back in S2, sheesh), then throwing things will commence.
Rumple being a dastardly villain again: I love the manipulative imp but he was mean to Anna. And Hook (who, okay, asked for it). And Belle. And If Emma really loves Hook (mrgh) he was even threatening to hurt her with his blackmail (though some interpreted his threat as actually hurting Emma–I’m going to choose not to, but I could see it). Oh, and he probably killed Mickey 🙁 I don’t like seeing him hurt people even if I do like seeing him be clever and make deals and stuff. I know it’s part of who he is and his character wouldn’t be nearly so fascinating without that darkness, but it’s still hard to watch sometimes when you’re rooting for him to fight the darkness and he just keeps racking up the murder count. If they can connect the dots by showing that he’s motivated at least in part by wanting to protect Belle (oh, but then they’d have to maybe give her some screentime? heaven forbid they put an intelligent, adorable woman on the screen…) I -might- forgive it. I’m very forgiving, especially when it comes to Rumple…but I’d still like to see some of his character development actually on display.
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing

I can pretty much agree with you about Snow… but in her defense she just had a baby ( real life) I do not think GG is physically ready to do a lot of filming so their story is pretty much on the back burner… I think that is why we see CHARMING / JOSH as deputy and having stories without SNOW. WE are not going to see a lot of the dynamic duo until Snow has the time to get back into SNOW shape. I am hoping they will be back in action by the second half of the season.
I have not been watching the WHO IS FILMING NOW thread that closely but I am guessing this was filmed in AUGUST …. I think we need to take post partum time into consideration.
As for the writing of SNOW & PC being the fawning / over protective parents … I think they are still trying to come to grips with Emma as an adult…. In their hearts she is still there baby.
