Overall, my favorite one of 5B so far. 8/10
LIKED
-Slow pace without being boring.
-Hades and Zelena together-great match, and the actors play well off each other.
-Warrior Dorothy
-CGI scarecrow
-We finally found out who was taking care of the babies
-Zelena calling Robin out on leaving the baby for the Underworld to rescue a pirate (and frankly, I don’t think his excuse was good enough! Want to be hero? Be a father a first!).
-Henry writing that Snowing were able to talk/sing to Neal vs the telephone.
-Robin had lines and things to do!
-Emily De Ravin’s acting has vastly improved.
-Zelena’s actress’ acting was top notch. I have always enjoyed her performance but this time she really knocked it out of the park.
DISLIKED
-No explanation for Robin’s absence last episode.
-The weird breathing that Hades does whenever he uses his blue magic.
-Where was Hook? I don’t like the character or the actor but it seemed inconsistent?
-Plot hole: they may not have anything of the baby’s, but if they had found Rumple they might have had something off Belle’s for the tracking spell? Still, Robin found the baby using the old-fashioned method.
-Zelena’s magic being unpredictable and working or not working when it serves the plot all too conveniently.
CONFUSIONS
If Snowing are regulars at the diner, does this mean that the spirits are moving on quickly after all? Or maybe they have no need for food now that they are dead (except when they are bored?).
CONCLUSION
Very emotional episode, and I am not looking forward to Zelena’s reaction if/when Hades betrays her.
CONGRATS
To those who suggested that
-Hades made the Underworld look like SB for Zelena
-Zelena was impersonating the Blue Fairy.
-Hades wants revenge on Zeus.
-Hades and Zelena would connect over a shared drive to destroy a sibling

April 4, 2016 at 10:27 am #320832RumplesGirlKeymasterI’ve had a night to think about this episode and I think my stance is going to change a bit. I think it’s better than I originally thought. I still think the Hades/Zelena backstory was warp speed and under-developed but the actors know how to sell the limited material and god knows there were a lot of fun lines when you have such over the top characters interacting.
And while anything to do with Hook/Emma/Snow/Charming fell flat and boring (seriously, they are just sitting around fretting!) the final scene between Hades and Zelena was actually really good and powerful and almost (almost!) made up for the faster than lightening romance of the past. It helped sell the need for present day drama instead of spending an entire episode developing the past relationship which would have been good in this case. I also thought a lot of truth bombs Zelena gave to Robin were spot on (love the saving the pirate line vs being a father) though @Onceaholic is right that Zelena’s magic was *super* convenient.
There are some meaty ideas with Rumple and Belle and even with whatever is being done wit Henry (the blackouts feel too intentional to not be something).
In short, this episode goes to show that a good (great) performance or two can trump a story line that would fall flat otherwise. Still not my favorite of the season (Devil’s Due) but it’s a good second, tied with Souls of the Departed.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 4, 2016 at 12:43 pm #320853PheeParticipantThis is not at all a constructive comment, it’s a total nitpick that I just have to get out of my system.
I detest the shade of lipstick they have on Zelena when she’s green. I don’t profess to know much of anything about makeup, but I know that that shade of green, with that shade of red, screams “Christmas decoration”. I don’t typically have strong feelings about makeup related anything ever, but it makes me irrationally twitchy that someone who is a makeup professional chose THAT shade of lipstick out of ALL the shades of lipstick they had at their disposal. It makes her look ridiculous, when she’s meant to look menacing, and cringing at it distracts me every single time she appears on screen looking like that, and it irritates me so much I just had to have a little rant about it.
That is all. Carry on.
April 4, 2016 at 2:16 pm #320884KebParticipant…holy smokes I was only 5 days off on Zelena’s birthdate.
(I had decided to go with the airdate, which was April 20th, of the episode we see her birth in, 318…but still. I’m kinda pleased. I’ll hang onto that date as the date of her adoption then.)

3. Hey, Rumple, if Hades needs your blood to bring a living soul into the Underworld, then isn’t your unborn baby actually quite safe from behind taken by him, UNLESS you help him make this portal?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 4, 2016 at 2:45 pm #320892KebParticipantWe know magical contracts enforce themselves sometimes…we saw that with Ella and Thomas back in 104. Rumple didn’t have to lift a finger to enforce the deal when they tried to break it. Only Emma’s intervention and alteration of the contract eventually allowed Thomas and Ella to resume their relationship at all.
So I’m not sure that it matters that Hades wouldn’t be able to drag Baby Gold down to the Underworld…there are other ways it could be enforced. Possibly the contract itself would cause the infant’s death, as dark as that is (likely too dark for Once). I doubt the show will ever explain it, but…it never explained Thomas’s vanishing at the well, either 🙂

That’s a brilliant point I hadn’t considered. Maybe the contract is magical and is a loophole that will let Hades bring a living being to the underworld since it is binding? Perhaps Hades can’t bring someone against their will to the underworld, but if they are willing and/or their parent willing ceded their rights to said child then it works?

“There’s always a loophole”
*sigh*
I know. My questions are pointless.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 4, 2016 at 2:53 pm #320897KebParticipantIn S1 it was pretty clear that the baby trade was for the purposes of the promise he eventually got from Emma, which his seer abilities let him know was a good idea at the very least. And when he tried to trade for Regina, it was to train her up to get the curse accomplished.
…yet…I’m wondering…
Maybe Rumple was not so much inspired by this original deal he got roped into, but trying to find a price that could get him out of it? I’m still headcanoning that he doesn’t kill the healer guy until after Cora agrees to give him his own child.
So at some point, not liking debt, he starting asking for babies so he could alter the original deal?
I dunno. We’ve seen the purposes behind the children he HAS dealt for. And I still think that part of it was simply how he’d do anything for his son. Just thinking.

April 4, 2016 at 4:12 pm #320910PriceofMagicParticipantDefinitely one of the top episodes of season 5 so far.
Liked
Zelena and Hades- As a couple and separately. I’m shipping Halena. I loved the bike ride and it’s ironic that Hades, lord of the underworld, shows Zelena, the wicked witch, more respect than Hook show Emma. When Zelena told Hades to back off, he backed off. He didn’t continue to harass her until she eventually gave in. He stated his case then has given her space to make her decision. Also Zelena was so on point with her criticisms of Robin and his attitude towards his daughter.
The RumBelle library scene- Rumple told Belle the truth about the baby deal AND being the dark one again. So kudos to him. It’ll be interesting to see how things develop between them since Rumple gave an accept me as I am speech or leave. I’m kind of hoping we get a dark Belle in the vein of Lacey and then Rumple realises that the power is corrupting Belle and he choses her over the power because he doesn’t want to see the woman he loves destroyed by his darkness.
Hook having a minimal role- The show is better when Hook is not being pushed centre stage.
Mixed
Dorothy- I don’t like her but I don’t dislike her. She’s rather bland. I hope we don’t have to put up with her too much longer.
Henry as the author- I thought his comments about how everyone’s an author, how he’s doing his best etc etc was actually very meta and was aimed at the audience as well as the other characters.
The reveal that the babies were plonked in the nuns’ nursery- It just makes Snowing and Robin’s decision to run off on the save Hook mission with no thought for their children even worse. The babies weren’t even with people they knew. Belle only visited, she wasn’t actually looking after the babies, and she brought bottles with her? Considering the babies were being housed at the nunnery, shouldn’t the nuns have bottles on hand, instead of waiting for Belle to travel there?
Disliked
Hook- He’s whining at Henry because Henry is unable to work as fast as he likes and both Henry’s mother’s say nothing? At least they complimented Henry on his penmanship but still they should have stuck up for Henry against Hook.
