I suddenly find myself with a lot of questions!
–Who is Underworld’s phone operator?
–Where did the phone booth come from? Does SB have the same one?
–Why is the breath of the living so wanted if no one but the dead goes to the Underworld?
–Where is the black market? What do they trade?
–Why can dead people eat?
–Why in the world would they change the birth order of Zeus and Hades? It makes way more sense to have Zeus be the younger one who got everything, to parallel Regina who got everything over her older sister, Zelena
–Was it really so hard for Hades to find the ingredients on his own that he was forced to schlep to Oz?
–Where did Regina get her snazzy cloche hat? Did she find it in the woods and decide it would look good on her head? Did she poof it from the Death Apartment? (Yes, yes. She often poofs clothing but this was so random)

All of which are pointless. But, I’ll try, anyway.
–Who is Underworld’s phone operator?
Graham. Because of Alexander Graham Bell.
–Where did the phone booth come from? Does SB have the same one?
Bill and Ted. No.
–Why is the breath of the living so wanted if no one but the dead goes to the Underworld?
You answered your own question. Supply and demand.
–Where is the black market? What do they trade?
Pan’s shop.
–Why can dead people eat?
Because they want to.
–Why in the world would they change the birth order of Zeus and Hades? It makes way more sense to have Zeus be the younger one who got everything, to parallel Regina who got everything over her older sister, Zelena
Because that’s how it was in the Disney movie, dang it!
–Was it really so hard for Hades to find the ingredients on his own that he was forced to schlep to Oz?
I think he needed Zelena’s recipe, or something. Cookies are done!
–Where did Regina get her snazzy cloche hat? Did she find it in the woods and decide it would look good on her head? Did she poof it from the Death Apartment? (Yes, yes. She often poofs clothing but this was so random)
Madeline De Vil.

Just to clarify…..Cronus and Rhea has 6 children in the following order
–Hestia
–Demeter
–Hera
–Hades
–Poseidon
–Zeus
(From Hesiod’s Theog0ny)
ETA: oh. Maybe I just figured out what the show’s doing. When Cronus regurgitates his children, he does it in reverse order of their birth. Zeus was never swallowed so he was never “reborn” making both the youngest and oldest, and making Hestia the oldest and the youngest

Oddly enough, that’s the birth order the Disney version went with, too. I don’t think it was brought up in the film itself, but it was in the animated TV series. Not sure why they decided to do that.

Like most things in mythology, different sources say different things, but the most widely accepted one (and the one that’s the oldest–surviving) is Hesiod’s Theogony, which gives the list I provided above.
Full text (line 453) of the Theogony
But Rhea was subject in love to Cronos and bore splendid children, Hestia, Demeter, and gold-shod Hera and strong Hades, pitiless in heart, who dwells under the earth, and the loud-crashing Earth-Shaker, and wise Zeus, father of gods and men, by whose thunder the wide earth is shaken

All magic comes with a price!

Yes. Now what’s wackier? Swallowing or….
–Being birthed from the head of your father (Athena?)
–having your mother burn up in a fire when she beholds the true image of your father, while you are in utero, only for your father to take your “unborn” body and sew it into his thigh and later birth you that way? (Dionysus)
–to be born from the cut off genitalia of the god “Sky” (Uranus) after they were thrown into the sea and formed foam? (Aphrodite)

I think Cronus wins wackiest birth.

This wasn’t a terrible episode, and despite the slower pacing, it didn’t drag, but rather gave the characters some space to breathe.
Liked:
I was actually really surprised — and kind of impressed, folklore wise — with what they did with Rumple and Belle. Since I’m rarely impressed with the show anymore, this was actually exciting. They seem to be subverting the original BB story through the idea that one can’t expect one’s partner to change on one’s behalf. This is an interesting way to read against the grain of the standard romance trope. Not that I think they’re that versed in folkloric variants of Beauty and the Beast, but there’s a Russian 19th century version that addresses a very similar thing head on: in the story, the beast is totally insecure that the merchant’s daughter actually will like his human side, after falling in love with the beastly aspect.
Snow and Charming weren’t actually tediously doltish.
The Emma/Hook storm in a teacup tedium wasn’t front and central. What a delightful change.
Flashback Zelena was a bit campy, but UW Zelena was, I think for the first time, almost sympathetic.
Mixed:
I was, and still am, predisposed to strongly dislike the Hades/Zelena pairing, simply on the principle that oh my god enough with the ships. But it wasn’t terrible — though really, it was mostly the acting. They floated it in a really impressive way, but the writing itself with the utterly bizarre story of the scarecrow’s brain, bicycle ride, and assorted weirdness was over the top silly. Interesting parallel, though, between Zelena and Rumple. “No one can love me.” Well, then. But… Hades: “I was trying to rescue her from those miserable heroes.” LOL. So… Zelena’s the new Persephone?
Disliked:
So, it seems to be foreshadowed that Hades is going to try to use Baby Rumbelle to do the time travel thing. This, of course, will fail. There is no way that OUAT will actually use a sacrificial baby. Though 9 months is a long time to wait, so maybe instead he’ll try to snatch baby Neal (who has experience with this sort of thing).
That is some preservatives-loaded formula they got going there. Seriously. How long has that thing been sitting in Zelena’s coat pocket?
Hook getting on Henry’s case. Seriously? Though I must say, I wonder how much Henry’s dialogue was “meta” (Oh, everyone’s an author now).
And that’s all I got.
April 5, 2016 at 10:28 am #320958thedarkonedearieParticipantOk, so I too am late to the party but here are my thoughts:
Overall: 8/10
Liked:
– The acting. Rebecca Mader and Emilie de Ravin gave the best performances I’ve seen on the show. And then through in Greg Germann, and this was easily the best acted episode of this arc, maybe the season.
– Hades and Zelena backstory. Yes it was a little fast, but as RG said earlier, the actors were so great, that they almost sold it, and they most certainly at least made it work.
– Zelena being a strong woman. It would have been so easy for her to fall for Hades, which would have been the same story we have seen countless times. However, the story, was different, and complicated, and still is complicated. She turns him down, twice! And he seems so convincing. And yet, she can’t trust him, and neither can I. We really don’t quite know if Hades truly loves her or not, and I like that.
– Zelena giving her baby her best chance. That scene was gut wrenching. And for the first time, I actually believed that Zelena cared about her baby. She finally treated her daughter like a person, and not a possession. It was great.
– Scarecrow CGI I thought was actually cool.
– Rumple and Belle. So Rumple’s character has certainly been up for debate. However, if you saw the character the way I have always seen him, this was a great scene. I love how honest Rumple was. Literally just through everything at this woman. And finally, Belle wasn’t stupid. Her reactions were realistic and her acting was spot on. When she said, “Not even for me,” I almost died. And as far as Rumple goes, I have always seen him as a man who wanted power, even when he was a coward doing everything he could do to protect his son. And with Belle, I have always thought that a part of her fell in love with “the beast.” She liked both parts of him. Now I know many people disagree on this, and it’s certainly up for debate, but Rumple finally saying this is who he is and basically telling Belle it is a combo package she gets (DO and Rumple), if she decides to stay with him, was genuinely honest, and I felt like Rumple finally was at least accepting who he was. It will be interesting to see if Belle still stays with him because I have always thought a part of her liked some of “the beast” qualities, but it never was brought up. I was truly blown away when this conversation happened. Honesty was off the charts, and once again, the acting was spot on.
– Henry writing the book. I actually liked that he doesn’t have much control here. It wouldn’t have made sense if he was all of a sudden an amazing qriter and illustrator. And how could he possibly write all the things going on when he isn’t there to see it? The fact that the pen is a living thing, I think helps with these potential issues, and Henry blacking out, and writing these pages, not knowing how he did them, served well because it keeps him as the author, but it doesn’t contradict anything we have seen the authro be able to do in the past. I was ok with this, although it will be interesting to see if Henry can write in the book without blacking out. He may simply be the wielder and may not have any power really. Although, that would contradict what the previous author was able to do.
Mixed:
– The reveal as to why SB looks the way it does….is it really for her? Somehow I still think there is a different reason and he’s just using her again. And it doesn’t explain then why he created the dark curse? Or I guess does this mean he didn’t create the dark curse?
– Toto. Great to see him, but come on, a curtain? A curtain helped Dorothy and Scarecrow escape…
Disliked:
– Some of the dialogue in this episode was not so great. Luckily the actors saved some of it.
– Ghost haunting booth…haha seriously (although them finding out their message got through because of what Henry wrote, was actually really sweet).
– Would they really have given the Hansel and Gretel witch some lines about a breath of the living without that being important down the line? We know how Pan plans to escape. We know how Cruella plans to escape. Maybe this is tied in to how this witch is planning to escape, but if it isn’t, it’s so random.
– No Cruella…sad.
– All the idiots falling for Zelena again. Props to Belle for not falling for it and leaving Zelena on the ground with a busted ankle and taking the baby. Belle was seriously on point finally in this episode.
– How on earth did Zelena get to SB?
– DOROTHY WAS AWFUL.
– Munchkins were useless.
– BABY SNATCHING……And some major recycling at the moment. So Zelena wants her baby back, Regina and Robin want their baby back once Zelena takes her, and Hades wants both Zelena, Robin and Regina’s baby, and Belle’s baby? Ok, ENOUGH. And we have already done this before. He wants it for the time traveling spell…….NOOOOOOO. Please tell me that they aren’t doing this. It’s still early, so maybe things will get switched up, but if this is just Hades wanting to do exactly what Zelena did, I’m going to throw up. This episode would have gotten at least a 9 if this wasn’t happening. I’m still holding out that over the course of the rest of the season, things will change, but this makes me nervous.
Overall, solid episode. Some iffy, and cheesy writing spots, and the HellWitch romance was fast. However, the acting was spot on, and the two of them together actually made me want to root for their twisted love. There were some big character moments in this episode as well, and I enjoyed that Hades and Zelena were way more complicated than a long ago romance that went bad. We still don’t know if Hades truly loves her, and that’s intriguing.
