This was a good episode. Definitely the best of season 5 so far. Because I did like it quite a bit, I’ll just post my highlights and the minor dislikes.
Highlights:
Henry Sr’s story- It was nicely concluded. The emotionality of his interactions with current day Regina and Henry Jr is the kind of thing that has been missing from this show for so long. This was Once getting back to its roots and it was great.
Neal’s appearance- Although it would’ve been nicer if Neal could’ve actually interacted with Henry and Rumple, I did like what we got of him. This scene alone proves that why Neal and Emma were the better couple because their interactions just felt natural, it wasn’t forced, it wasn’t melodramatic, it’s just normal.
Lack of Hook- It was quite refreshing to have an episode where Hook wasn’t in every scene. With each passing season, Hook has began dominating scenes more and more to the point where he’s unlikeable because he’s always there even when he doesn’t need to be. He will always stick the boot in then whistle innocently when it backfires on him and the other characters never call him out on it. For an episode to have no Hook at all apart from one short non-speaking scene is fantastic. Also the fact that Hook seems to be suffering kind of suggests that that’s happening for more reasons than just being a dark one which leads me to one of my dislikes.
Dislike:
Emma’s threats towards Rumple- It annoys me how Emma is still on the “I’ll tell Belle unless you do what I say” bandwagon. It’s disrespectful towards Belle as Emma is essentially using her as leverage against Rumple instead of treating Belle as an actual person with feelings. Season 1/2 Emma would never have treated Belle so poorly. Also, if the only reason Hook is suffering is because he died the dark one, did it never occur to Emma that perhaps Rumple actually went through what Hook is suffering now when he sacrificed himself at the end of 3A and that it maybe changed Rumple for the worse hence his actions from the end of 3B onwards? If Hook dying as a dark one is NOT the reason that he’s suffering now, then shouldn’t Emma be asking herself what has he done that has lead him to suffer this suffering?
Hades CGI hair- It just doesn’t look right and I hope that, now they’ve got the “this is Hades” moment out the way, they never use it again.
The Blind witch- I find her voice quite grating. I hope she has minimal speaking lines in future episodes.
Overall, Id give this episode about an 8 or 9/10. It wasn’t perfect but it was certainly better than any episode out of 5A.

BTW, did anyone else just felt that RC wasn’t really acting? He just said his lines. I mean just look at his scene with Belle.

A couple of us were talking about the acting last night and without disrespecting the actors but there is a level of force there that wasn’t in previous seasons. Or at least, sometimes the actors feel like they are just going through the motions instead of actually acting.

The hints at Regina being key to saving everyone in the underworld. I really hope that she gets to make up for what she has done by helping the people she killed, and takes a huge leap forward towards her redemption. It would take Graham to make the storyline complete, though, and I have a feeling that he won’t even get a mention.
I am thinking GRAHAM had pretty much completed his path to redemption and like NEAL is in a better place…… he was pretty good before he became the HUNTER / with SNOW WHITE … HE saved Charming and worked against the Evil Queen before the curse…. He was a pretty good man even though controlled by Mayor Regina …. He remembered his past before he died.
In my book he is in the happier place and that is why we do not see him …. OF COARSE HE IS ALSO FILMING THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF THE SHADES OF GREY SERIES.

I am thinking there will be more of NEAL in the future…. THEY brought MJR in for filming for several days ( per TWEETS.) The show only showed him in a brief scene that could have been filmed in a hour or two. I think Neal will be seen by his son and Neal will confront his father at some point. I see no sense in them bring in MJR for several days and them not filming several scenes…. THAT IS MY PREDICTION AND I AM STICKING TO IT.

Liked:
Henry Sr and Regina. I’ve always felt that Henry Sr didn’t make too much sense, but this episode both fleshed out his character, and resolved it. Henry and Henry Sr was a lovely scene. Bonus points for the Indiana Jones-style inferno prop (a kind of mashup of IJaHG and Temple of Doom?)
The Neal scene. Though I am note sure why Neal’s afterlife is resolved, considering he’s admittedly missing Henry. I think this is a majorly lost opportunity to have them have a scene together.
Cora. Cora’s always amazing. Cora and Regina together hit it out of the ballpark. It’s nice to see actual good acting on this show.
Hades. The actor nails it. Also, I am actually impressed with OUAT, for once, addressing the issue of class — although granted, a bit perversely if you think about it. I mean Cora’s eternal torment is to become a Miller’s Daughter again and deliver flowers for eternity? I suppose that if Hades is able to materialize one’s deepest fears, then this is actually an interesting commentary on what drives Cora as a character.
James. David’s evil twin has so much more chutzpah than his brother.
Rumple playing unwilling tour-guide. Much as I enjoy watching him ambling about in his designer overcoat and sneering at everyone, a bit more purpose to the ambling would be nice. They’re really not doing much with his character so far — the scene with Pan had promise but felt a bit rushed. I think I understand what they’re trying to do here, i.e. recapture that spirit of “chaotic neutral” where you never know whether Rumple is going to side with the heroes or the villains, but we’re missing a sense of purpose beyond ‘Hey, I want nothing to do with your harebrained schemes’ (though, to be fair, can’t blame him on that).
Mixed:
Belle. Nice, what was that — 5 seconds of screen time?
General plot. Maybe I was skipping over a lot of things, but so far the cosmology they’re laying out is a bit confusing. So, the UW is a sort of relay point on the way to other places: presumably, something more like Hell proper, and presumably some heavenly realm(s). But how on earth does this relate to unfinished/finished business? Or does it not? What if a villain is stuck in the UW — wouldn’t it be in their interest to not get things resolved, lest they end up in an even worse place? Anyway, I’m confused.
Disliked:
While I sort of like the Emma/Gold antagonism, blackmailing Rumple through Belle is a bit OOC for Emma — whatever one might think of Rumple, none of this is Belle’s fault, and she should not be used as collateral, especially by someone who has claimed for herself the title of Savior.
I’m still not 100% sure why the whole lot of them are so gun-ho about finding Hook. I get it that the plot demands it, but it would have been a lot more organic if the writing reflected different characters’ multiple motivations for following Emma blindly into the Underworld to retrieve a dude who is really not particularly relevant to anyone but Emma.

WHAT does OOC mean?

Because heroes save people? I’m guessing.

It would have been different had this plotline been done to save Neal at the end of S3 as I had hoped back then. Regina would have come to support Henry, and Henry & Rumple would have come for their own connections to Neal. Robin and the Charmings STILL have kids they should be caring for and almost zero cause to seek either of Emma’s loves (except to support Emma/Regina), but whatever. Actually, after Emma, Belle has the best relationship with Hook at this point out of the whole group and she got left behind (and she also had a good relationship with Neal going, so…). So whatever. Some logic got thrown under the bus to make this plot work.
