So far the best reason they’ve given for everyone to go is “We’re supporting Emma,” save for Gold, who is there because blackmail (and also his blood yadda yadda).
It would have been different had this plotline been done to save Neal at the end of S3 as I had hoped back then. Regina would have come to support Henry, and Henry & Rumple would have come for their own connections to Neal. Robin and the Charmings STILL have kids they should be caring for and almost zero cause to seek either of Emma’s loves (except to support Emma/Regina), but whatever. Actually, after Emma, Belle has the best relationship with Hook at this point out of the whole group and she got left behind (and she also had a good relationship with Neal going, so…). So whatever. Some logic got thrown under the bus to make this plot work.
Me and RG originally predicted that it would be Regina sacrificing herself at the end of 5A, before the spoilers got out that it would be Hook. I think in some regard everyone going to the Underworld for Regina would have made more sense, and Regina would have essentially paid Emma back for when she saved her at the end of Season 4. Not to mention, there was that whole thing about Regina being the new savior earlier in the Season. While it might have come across as SQ baiting, I still think there could have been more logic going this route. Emma, Henry, Snow, Charming, and Robin would all have their reasons for wanting to save Regina. Rumple probably still would have been blackmailed into it, though.

Hook has relationships with everyone, but only his relationship with Emma is one that anyone would go to the underworld to save him for. What we’ve been shown on screen is Henry’s having mixed feelings about Emma dating Hook but enjoying Hook’s lessons in piracy, Regina having a normal covillain animosity toward Hook, Robin having…done stuff with Hook cuz he was there, the Charmings tolerating Hook for Emma’s sake, and Gold loathing Hook passionately with the feeling entirely mutual. Belle actually became friends with Hook while they were working to free the fairies, but when they decided to make her almost entirely OOC for the last three eps of 5A, they kinda dropped the friendship, too. None of them save Emma has a truly positive connection to Hook and half don’t really have a relationship that’s been developed on screen. Which is actually strange considering Hook has one of the highest screentimes out of the regulars.
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing

Basically, A&E promised we’d get an answer to the question of why the UW looks like SB.
Their reply: “YOUR QUESTIONS ARE POINTLESS” (aka the answer to every question about this show)
"That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy
March 8, 2016 at 1:27 pm #318441RumplesGirlKeymasterI think “your questions are pointless” is going to be my new PLOT.

We actually are getting an answer in 516. According to overheard on set dialogue, Hades created the Underbrooke as a gift for Zelena. Something to do with how Zelena always wanted to be the one to cast the curse.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they have never planned for this and the only reason they will add an explanation is because fans started to ask them about it on twitter based on bts.

Crapping on the writers even when they haven’t done anything wrong….tisk. Hades possibly creating the Dark Curse resulting in why the UW looks like Storybrooke I think is clever, and they already hinted at this in the last episode. So I’m sure this was planned.

Maybe, but they should not have Rumple say this line. He should have said something like “This is not important right now, what’s matter is…” or something that imply that he knows the reason. “Your questions are pointless” is insulting, it’s like I’m not being resprcted as a viewer and they just expect me to not think about it and just go with it. Some viewers are fine with it, I’m not.

Well perhaps Rumple doesn’t know the answer. Or he’s keeping it close to the chest. We don’t know yet. I don’t think it was a reflection of the writers not knowing the answer, I think it was Rumple not knowing, or more likely, not divulging.
March 8, 2016 at 2:42 pm #318465RumplesGirlKeymasterI don’t know if it’s that Rumple doesn’t know or the writers didn’t plan. Because in 5×11 Rumple said that the Underworld was worse than the fire and brimstone we know from tales. That implies that when he was in the Underworld he was in a place that was worse than the Mount Doom we saw in the Fire-Cave. But the Mount Doom is moving on to someplace worse–seemingly forever, for eternal punishment. So Rumple had to be there, in this worse place? Except he came back through the Dark One’s Vault?
It sounds, to me, like the writers are, once again, guilty of lack of world building. They need to save money so they can’t really build an entire set, with heavy CGI, for the Underworld so they use their already built SB set and a red filter. And then they knew they needed a reason for it to look like SB, so Hades and Zelena have something going on
