@ Lil’Red: My sincere apologies if posting the same pictures in a different thread offended you, but I did give you credit in both this thread and that one. I was in no way trying to plagiarize your ideas or mock them. I actually thought your ideas were really good, and I agreed with them in that thread, if you reread them: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1440&start=10
There is no rule about not being able to re-post relevant photos in a different thread and repeating some of the same conversation, because this is an open forum with lots of different contributions. I wasn’t trying to improve on your ideas, but just processing them. I wasn’t at all mocking your idea about the possibility of Dr. Whale potentially having scales. In fact, there is a photo of David Anders (Dr. Whale) with mysterious reptile-looking arms posted in this thread and the other, so I actually think it could be plausible! When I speculated Dr. Whale could be both the crocodile and Peter Pan, I was half serious, because it’s my imagination taking off and thinking about Ruby also being the Big Bad wolf. It’s just the sheer fun of me jumping to the conclusion that the writers could potentially think of such an unusual and amusing scenario that makes me laugh at loud. I like to kid around, and that’s just my personality.
Honestly, I was truly surprised by your response. I’ve been posting here 6 months, and yours is the first negative reaction I’ve received. One of the dangers of using the internet as a means of communication is that you can’t tell others’ tone or intent. I’m not out to get one up on anyone or take something away from your contributions. I always strive to respect others’ opinions and ideas, even if I disagree. I hope you can in turn give the benefit of the doubt and see I had good intentions.

Bringing people back from the dead is always a messy business anyway.
I see what you mean about it being “messy” to bring back someone to life. Nevertheless, there is a theory about a “new weapon” being introduced in S2, which has been speculated to be the medallian Rumpel holds up in the promos for the upcoming season. Check out the promos here: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1444. Also, AntBee speculated that the rune could be the “Rune of the Grave” which could be linked to possible sightings of Daniel around town in episode 2×5. Here is what the mediallian looks like:
PriceofMagic wrote: I wouldn’t mind Daniel in the present so much if he was like a ghost haunting Regina or in a dream sequence but I wouldn’t want him brought back to life. His death is what motivates Regina against Snow, him being alive would make Regina unnecessary. Regina’s redemption should come with her letting go of the past and moving on with her life.
Yes, I see what you mean about Daniel’s death being Regina’s motivation for revenge. If she were to see a ghost of Daniel (thanks to the rune), she might hear how disappointed Daniel is in what Regina has become (evil and full of hate). If Regina heard from the “other side” this might be one way for her to regret what she has done and become and start her on the road to redemption.

I also keep thinking it looks kind of like a bird.
And now I’m also thinking how much the middle bit looks like this “protection” rune:

…but stuffed if I know what the other bits on it would mean. That medallion has me all confused.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you that the medallion appears Asian and possibly links to Mulan’s story. Elsewhere I speculated that the medallian could’ve once belonged to Mulan, since in the Disney telling of the story, her crest had a dragon on it. Also, it could be a tie-in to Maleficent. Perhaps what you think looks like a bird could be a representation of a dragon with wings? It’s a bit of a stretch for the image to be a dragon, but it might be an ancient rudimentary engraving.

I’m with you about being confused by this rune (if it even is a rune). I like your idea of the medallion possibly being “protective” rather than destructive. Just sounds a bit nicer for the kids watching this with their families.

September 15, 2012 at 5:34 am #153847SlurpeezParticipantOn tumblr I found more research about which symbol Rumpel’s medallion could be, and I don’t think it’s a rune at all. It’s an alchemical sign for white arsenic, found here: http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/05/0520.html
Rumpel’s symbol is reversed upside down, but otherwise, the symbols match almost exactly. All credit for the research goes to this awesome tumblr site: http://epistolaryconnotations.tumblr.com/post/31540430648/omg-you-guys-i-found-it
I did a little bit more research on white arsenic, also known as arsenic trioxide. It is extremely deadly if ingested and was often used to poison one’s enemies in times past. Here’s an interesting theory about the mysterious deaths of a prominent Italian couple in 1587: http://www.bmj.com/content/333/7582/1299.full
According to wikipedia, despite having a very high toxicity level, white arsenic has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine (known as Pi Shuang) to treat cancers. It’s used in Western medicine as a second-line chemotherapy when first lines of defense don’t work in cancer treatment.

September 15, 2012 at 5:54 am #153888PheeParticipantThat’s totally what it is! Perfect match except for the upsidedown-ness. A couple of cool bits of info that people posted in the comments over there:
“helps to make the pill of immortality, the conclusion of the Great Work, or search for the philosopher’s stone to transmute base elements into gold” … The white in particular is poison to rats
“The elemental alchemy symbol arsenic was used for medicinal and magical cures. A compound of arsenic and sulpher were said to induce trances of enlightenment and philosphical ascention and direction.”
Now we know what it is, we can officially start wondering what he’s gonna do with it. 😉
September 15, 2012 at 6:13 am #153890SlurpeezParticipantGoing off of those comments, alchemy was the search to create the fabled philosopher’s stone (also known as the sorcerer’s stone to Harry Potter fans in the USA). The legend of the philosopher’s stone is that the stone could turn base metals like lead into precious metals like gold and would grant immortality to the one who possessed the stone. In OUaT-legend, we know Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltksin could make gold from straw and that he’s been alive for centuries (and is likely immortal). In a sense, Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltksin IS the philosopher’s stone.
I have a new theory starting to develop. In alchemy, white arsenic was considered a key step to making the philosopher’s stone. White arsenic “helps to make the pill of immortality, the conclusion of the Great Work, or search for the philosopher’s stone to transmute base elements into gold.” What if the reversed (upside-down) symbol of white arsenic on Rumpel’s medallion represents Rumpel’s curse being reversed? 😮
In the new promo for s2, there is a brief glimpse of Mr.Gold/Rumpel is holding up his knife (with his name on it) to the medallion with the reversed symbol of white arsenic. I wonder if he is performing a ritual which he believes will help reverse his curse of being the Dark One. Adam and Eddy said S2 is all about redemption and second chances. I’d like to see Mr. Gold/Rumpel find his happy ending.

My brain just sploded! This is why Rumple can spin straw into gold! I’d never even considered that we’d get that question answered, just figured it was one of his little tricks. Suddenly it seems a whole lot more significant.

LOVE this idea!! In the promo, he was holding it up, and then drops the medallion while still holding the dagger. I wonder if he’s just cast a spell of some description and something is about to happen, like the name will disappear from the dagger? Maybe bringing magic back was a vital step in this process…he needed the magic to work in SB so he could cast the spell that would destroy the Dark One curse, which couldn’t be destroyed by any means back in FTL?

September 16, 2012 at 6:50 am #153966gypsyParticipantIn the one pic, it looks to me like Dr. Wale is trying to reason with Regina…like…for her own good. Like someone who is on her side, but thinks she is being overly dramatic or unreasonable…..like he’s trying to talk some sense into her.
