yeah, that would just be being repetitive though…
the idea of hiring someone to find Bae is really growing on me – I mean all the time watching the show we think of people who come to SB and their obvious connections to FTL and how noone else who isn’t linked doesn’t come to SB as well as nobody can actually leave the place either – and we forget this simple yet genius idea that SOMEONE ELSE can do this for the SB residents – whatever it is they need. We think of them as trapped but hey, they live in US, NOT on their own so it’s not like they can’t just ask someone for help… I know they aren’t used to it, for 28 years they didn’t need anything like that but it would be so cool engaging a complete outsider![adrotate group="5"]November 24, 2012 at 3:04 am #161912PheeParticipant@Hooks Spyglass wrote:

Or just to flip this theory on its head somewhat, perhaps he’s someone that Neal(Bae?) hires to go investigate the state of things with his father, instead of just heading to town himself.

Hang on, what’s stopping Barrett from being Victor’s brother?
Unless Victor has two brothers, it’s not possible, because there was an article naming Gerhart/Chad Michael Collins as being Victor’s brother, and a separate article that mentioned Ethan Embry’s character as Barrett, (though I think the article called him Bennett?).
November 24, 2012 at 3:21 pm #161997RumplesGirlKeymasterSpeaking of finding Bae: I wonder if Rumple’s favor would change now that he can’t leave SB. Maybe he asks Emma to go find him. Emma does apparently have magic or something like it. And it would be something very OUaT for it to turn out to be Neal. SURPRISE!

I read that tweet too! I’m at a total loss for who Ethan is playing. I’m holding out hope that he’s the Wizard of Oz.
…wait, wasn’t it confirmed that he was going to play Victor Frankenstein’s brother? Hmmm…me confused.
Like Spyglass said, Victor’s brother (Gerhardt) is being played by Chad Michael Collins. Everyone assumed that Ethan Embry would play Victor’s brother because there’s an uncanny resemblance between him and David Anders, but it turned out we were wrong. Ethan’s character is the “mysterious visitor to SB” named Barrett, “kind and smart, but also has a very dark side and has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.”
I’d been wondering if Ethan’s character might be a real world someone who would be anti-magic and follow Neal to town. But there’s been no suggestion that MRJ is filming right now, is there? So that theory is pretty much shot. Though the Wizard of Oz is meant to be a real world guy, if they stick with the original origin story for him. And he wasn’t truly magical, he was more of an illusionist, so he could potentially be anti-legit-magic. So maybe he’d get drawn to SB, and would try to put things right by using his own bag of tricks to try and get the better of the magic in town. Perhaps. Part of me likes the idea of him being Oz and part of me thinks they’ve already got enough big name players right now, so they could hold off on bringing in Oz for a while.
I read in a recent interview with Adam and Eddy that they’re probably going to leave off doing Wizard of Oz until maybe even S3, so I don’t think Ethan Embry will play Wizard of Oz, thought it’s interesting to consider.

November 24, 2012 at 3:43 pm #162004RumplesGirlKeymasterI’m kinda glad they’re staying off Oz for right now. If they threw that in, it might get just a bit much: Rumple, Cora, Regina, BF…we don’t need another magic being until we resolve Cora (as I think the second half of season two will be taking her down and toward the end the inhabitants of SB will succeed)

I just read Adam Horowitz’s tweet that the title for episode 11 is “The Outsider” which I think could refer to Ethan Embery’s character. I like the idea of him being from our world and having some connection to Neal/Bae.

I like the idea of Neal coming to SB in search of Emma and discovering that, low and behold, his father, Mr. Gold, is the one responsible for the entire curse. That’s not going to be a very happy surprise at all.

Ethan Embry’s character is Barrett, The casting call is:
His casting call describes him as: “A major recurring guest star role with an option for next season is being cast. A character named Barrett. He’s in his 30s, kind and smart, but also has a very dark side and has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.”
Chad Michael Collins has been cast as Gerhardt, Dr. Whale’s younger brother: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/s181/once-upon-a-time/news/a438392/once-upon-a-time-casts-chad-michael-collins.html

Good point. Maybe the writers should save Oz for season 3. I’d like for the character to have a nice clean season for him to fully flesh out without the presence of Cora and the Blue Fairy overshadowing him.

Sounds like a good plan to me. With everything that’s going on right now, adding Oz as well would be overload. When Oz happens, it should be in a context where it’s the focus, which wouldn’t happen if they went there right now.
My comment up thread about Barrett being a real world person who Neal hires to go investigate SB was just some random thing that popped into my head at the time, but the more I’ve thought about it, the more I like the idea. Didn’t Jane Espenson tweet someone recently, “You think he’s going to SB?” in response to a tweet about Neal. We’d all figured he’d go, because obviously he’s been waiting for the curse to be broken. But really, the more sensible option for him would be to send someone in there first to suss out what’s what and who’s who, rather than Neal just charging into town completely unprepared.

I like that idea but I think it depends on how much Neal has grown as a person in 11 years. We only saw a brief glimpse of his life in Broken, and it does look like he’s no longer a thief, hanging out in stolen cars or stealing watches. I just don’t know if we can call him sensible since all we really know about him was his thievery. Also: if he is Bae (an idea I refuse to let go of yet….) then that could be another reason why he doesn’t want to go to SB. Reunion with Rumple cannot be at the top of his to-do list.
