When Rumpel said “feed the madness, it feeds on you”, I thought he was referring to Zelena and her madness, not his. Rumple feeds Zelena’s madness. She feeds on him. The crazier she becomes, the more overly confident and vengeful she becomes, that’s when she’s more vulnerable to making a mistake that he can take advantage of.
Rumpel clearly is at a disadvantage as he’s lost his magic and is locked up. Rumpel’s only tactic is feed into Zelena’s madness. Rumple knows her well, as he was her teacher. He taught her magic and she’s good at it. But if she’s anything like Regina, when she’s overly confident or angered, that’s when she forgets the minor details and Rumple can take advantage.
I like that interpretation. I do wonder though how much he’s actually had to do to help her madness along. His mantra is “you feed the madness and it feeds on you,” and the “you” in both instances would be Zelena, so she’s feeding her own madness just fine without his help, and he’s just gotta sit back and wait for the right moment when her own darkness gets the better of her. He’s been there and done that himself, so he’ll know that she’s orchestrating her own downfall, no matter how in control she feels.

I think he went to Oz after he stabbed himself, and I hope we get to see some of it at some point. Then I bet Zelena found him there. Anyways, throughout this whole process of “undoing,” Rumple could have very well gone insane, thus leading to his current mental state, and also lost his magic, explaining why he’s his old self in the crazy department, but not in the confidence department or the not-being-able-to-be-caged department or the shiny-skin department.

I like that interpretation.
The only problem with the dagger going to Oz after the events of 3×11 is that Zelena seems to have set herself up as ruler before then. Aurora and Philip have made deals with her and our group were POOFed back to the EF about an hour after Rumple sacrificed himself.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 17, 2014 at 11:59 am #253582The Swan PrincessParticipantMaybe the events that happened with Pan did a reset on him. He didn’t look insane to me, in fact he looked completely like his old self, his way old self as in Rumplestiltskin the Dark One, no sign of Mr. Gold. OMG what if the undoing of him actually meant, everything he had achieved, his courage, his heart and mentally as Mr. Gold.
Yes that’s what I’m thinking! Maybe the line he said is like Emma’s name before the first curse- he made himself remember this phrase because it’s important to defeating Zelena even though he doesn’t remember the last year and he dosn’t know why it’s important so he just repeats it.

Oh that’s good.
You know what I can't continue with the dead people brought back to life list I'm out of space in the signature and now we have an underworld arc this is to much I quit why do you bring so many people back to life OUAT WHHHYYYY
March 17, 2014 at 1:39 pm #253610KebParticipantSince they’ve been emphasizing blood magic this season, I expect Rumple’s trapped in the cage at least in part by blood magic–only Regina could release him then.
And the way he waved his hands over the food when he was chanting made me think it was like a spell (but no sparkly bits, so no magic…). Is it next week yet?
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing
March 17, 2014 at 2:30 pm #253623Marty McFlyParticipantIt’s no wonder he’s gone crazy, if she really is NOT Regina’s sister, if she really is Milah’s sister and is lying because she is jealous that Rumpel fell in love with Milah and not with her, and then she got jealous that he fell in love with Cora and then she was jealous that he was Regina’s bff…. OK I think I am going crazy now lol
but seriously, if she is being wicked to him I don’t blame him for going crazy
