    Interesting articles. First time I’ve seen Rumpel referred to as a Byronic Hero, which is a term I never knew about until seeing your post. I wrote a similar post earlier on last season after watching Desperate Souls about Rumpel being the Tragic Hero. But the way he’s described in the first article makes a lot sense considering his character.

    His story could still follow parts of the tragic hero journey as well.

    I don’t know about that, I don’t know how else to put it except that I agree with the Byronic part but not the hero part.

    Gold is no hero, he is a coward and does not work for the greater good. Lets call him a BYRONIC LINUS.

    Well, Bryonic héros are hardly heroes in the traditional sense. They can be all cowardly and flawed, and still enticing to us womenfolk 😀

    I still think Rumpel will turn out to be the hero in the end.

    I never view him as an evil villain, he is sort of neutral to me and turning into anti-hero as time progresses 🙂

    I have to disagree with the article. He is not a hero, an anti-hero, or a byronic hero. He has done so much wrong and harm, and the few redeeming qualities he has are not enough. He may be arrogant, disrespectful, intelligent, suffering from a past mistake, and often moody, but he is also a murderer, manipulative, cruel, vengeful, bitter, destructive, and often does not learn from his mistakes.

    I agree with Elle. As much as -we- all love the character – how can we not? Robert Carlyle is so magnetic that we all automatically like him and want to make excuses for him, even when he does blatantly awful things. He is a villain. He may be seeking redemption, he may be trying to become better, but he is still a villain.

    I think “hero” was the wrong term for him. But he’s definitely a Byronic “figure.”

    @MellieMD

    I have alway thought that this whole cast is able to really make us feel so much for the characters. Even when they do something horrible or stupid, we cannot help but be fascinated and want the best for them.

    I doubt he will ever be a hero. I think for him, Belle and Baelfire will be the ones to bring out the light in. Just like Henry does the same for Regina, and how he is able to keep Emma grounded and keep her in Storybrooke.
