I was just wondering about this myself after that scene. I don’t think he did it out of the kindness of his heart, though. I’m pretty sure he DOES have an ulterior motive, even if that is just getting on someone’s good side. That’s still a motive that isn’t just to do something nice for the kid.
My two theories are that he needs Emma and Snow back, for whatever reason, or that he actually is Henry’s grandfather, as some people still think Neal is Bae.
I think the first one is a better explanation. His end game as I see it is to be able to leave Storybrooke so he can look for Bae, and if this whole thing with not being able to leave without losing their memories is a side-effect of the curse, that means that maybe Emma has to do something else to break it. I think that’s why he wants them back, and I’m sure he knows waaaay more about the sleeping curse than he’s letting on.

One, Belle’s influence over Mr. Gold has been working and he’s trying to be a better man. And two, the show is trying to build a close relationship between Mr. Gold and Henry. Like most have already said, Mr. Gold is probably Henry’s grandfather, so it would make sense for the writers to begin building that relationship now.
The show has been going out of its way to redeem its current villains, Regina and Rumpel. So, I think this was just another example of how much Mr. Gold is trying to change. This is the second time he’s helped someone without asking for a price. I think that’s the message the writers were trying to portray.

Granted, Henry will get a chance to be a hero and help the people he loves, but he will probably be put in danger. Also, he allowed Henry to live with Regina–again, he knew Regina would never hurt Henry, but he saw how destructive she can be. Wit the way he truly loves and cares about Baelfire, he would do all that he can to keep Henry from harm.
If he indeed knows that Henry is his grandson, then he seriously needs to work on how a grandfather should be.
November 14, 2012 at 3:38 am #160692jj_onceParticipantI think the main flaw for me about this Henry as his grandson theory is that I don’t see HOW he could possibly know that. The only way for him to know is if he knows his son is Neal. If he knew that, he would never have believed August when he tried to trick Rumple into believing he was Bae. And he wouldn’t be so focused on getting out of SB to search for Neal/Bae either, he would have already had to have contacted his son somehow to know he’s Henry’s father. So even if he is Henry’s other Grandpa, I don’t think he’d know that.

It’s already a well known fact that Mr. Gold didn’t have his memories until he heard Emma’s name in the pilot episode. So, any connection he feels with Henry probably comes from the fact that he reminds him of Baelfire.

Believe he wants to change, but wanting and actually doing, being able to are not the same. Magic offers power and a seemingly easy way out, it’s addictive – and obviously Gold is not yet there to step away from it, is he.
Even when his intentions occasionally are good and without any ulterior motives, his doings nevertheless can have bad ramifications. Magic comes with a prize doesn’t mean you’re or anyone is in control what you’re paying for it, or who will pay it, not even if you’re the Dark One. So with the good intention to help Henry here Gold / Rumple might have set something in motion which could end bad, harming Henry or someone else close to him.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯

But then isn’t that Regina’s fault? She’s the one who called Mr. Gold for help. She should have known better too.
November 14, 2012 at 5:24 pm #160749GrimmsisterParticipantOh come on you people!!!!!!!!!!! Why do you want Rumple to be good right now ???
He is at his best when he is super evil……. the Cora and the Hook characters can NOT pull it off as well as he can………….
Dont mean this as an offence to you guys but just I dont want grandpah Rumple. I want Rumplestiltzkin !!!!!November 14, 2012 at 7:41 pm #160751thetricksterParticipant@medchen wrote:

But being a twisted trickster doesn’t mean the guy has not feelings or preferences. And he seems to be fond of children. I don’t understand why it should be any ulterior motives, he has quick temper for both good and evil. That is what makes him an interesting, unpredictable character 😉
