I think it refers to relationships between characters from a book, tv series, film, etc… that fans create or/and follow. It usually refers to pairing characters as couple, no matter their genre or if they are or not couple in the cannon story, but it can also be a relationship of friendship, family ties… and lots of “what if…?” as arguments.

The word comes from the last part of “relationship”, and was first attested with this meaning back in the 70’s, when Star Treck fans wanted to see together some of their favorite characters, but it was used more frequently since the 90’s, when all the fans of “The X files” wanted Mulder and Scully being a couple.
It was first r’ship, and then ship,. and the couples the fans follow are usually known by a name created by a mixture of the two shipped characters name, as our OUaT cannon couple “Rumbelle” or the non-cannon one “SwanFire”. By extension, the fans who follow those couples are known also as, to follow with the same examples, “rumberllers” or SwanFirers”.

And I think I’m shuting up here, because this is the sort of thing that makes me think as a linguist, and I could finnish writing a paper on the origin and development of the shipping 😆

THANK YOU TRICKSTER for the complete explanation…. OUaT is the first show I have ever followed to this extent.

No problem. The first time i noticed the shipping was looking for a new book of a saga i used to read and it was quite shocking, because I thought that the stories i was reading were part of the new book and I was like 😯 😮 until I learnt that it was fanfiction and so on.
So I can understand your doubts, I still have lots of them sometimes with all the fandom universe 😉

Thanks for asking the question, Nonnie, and thanks to Trickster for supplying the answer. I’ve been meaning to ask the same question myself. since first encountering the term here. Despite being a longtime Star Trek fan, I had never run across the term – it’s nice to know that two of my favorite shows share a connection.
