Finale!
General: A pretty decent finale, though the first 30 mins felt like a lot of the characters were sitting around and simply waiting for the rest of the episode (and reminding the audience of everything that had happened up to this point without furthering much of the finale plot itself). In other words, if you come in with 15 mins until the end and all you hear of the first 45 mins is Strange say, “I set a bomb down there!” and that’s really all you need to know, then your finale isn’t moving at any sort of good pace. With *that* said….it’s pretty clear that S3 is the aftermath of Strange’s experiments which makes for a nice continuation of this past season. Keeps the momentum up from this finale.
LIKED
–Kinda love this opening sequence music, with the heavy guitars. Very fitting for a finale.
–Ben McKenzie is having a field day playing Clayface playing Jim Gordon and it’s hilarious.
–“I am God and I absolve you…” the Mad Scientist often has a God complex (c.f Frankenstein) so I’m glad they added this piece to Strange, if in an overt textual way (it was already pretty subtextual with his experiments)
–It goes without saying but everything that is Edward Nygma is on point and excellent and I’d watch an entire episode of him playing “Life Or Death!” with various characters. His mania has been a high point of this entire season.
–“I just like being…titillated…” I love Harvey (though he really needed to catch on to Clay!Jim before Barbara arrived on the scene…)
–Cool Ice and Fire visuals from Mr. Freeze and Firefly, respectively.
–LOL a cup of water saves the day but Ms Peabody wasn’t even trying to give them a hint! That’s fantastically hilarious and the sort of dark comedy that show does well.
–“That’s my car!” LOL Jim is finally getting more of a personality which is fantastic.
MIXED
–Added a mixed section just for this: is going after Leah the right move??? It was the right move like 5 episodes ago. Now, when the city is overrun with Big Bads and Batman is still Baby!Batman and can’t do anything as a masked vigilante…maybe leaving isn’t the right move?
DISLIKED
–Strange has some handy dandy “truth serum” laying around! (Walking back some of that criticism: that fits with Strange’s over the top trope of Mad Scientist, though, who usually have all manners of horrors at their disposal. So it’s a nitpick from me really)
–They really like having Fish declare her full name with an expletive, don’t they? The first time is funny and appropriate, the second is eye-roll worthy.
–Really, Penguin? Really? A head on a stick to decorate your room? (Again, every time Penguin enters this story it feels like a totally different show and one that is rather unbearable this season with it’s total hammyness and lacking depth. Penguin’s story this arc was just so...stupid. Right down to that annoying music that kicks in every time he’s enters the show.) However, Butch’s line about interior decorating was spot on.
After thoughts:
–I don’t get the final scene? Is that supposed to be Dark!Baby!Batman?? Is it possible that he’s Owlman (Thomas Wayne Jr??)
–Did anyone else hear Jerome?!
–Who else did people see? Killer Croc, Bane….?

I already saw one article speculate that he could be Lincoln March, which ties into the Court of Owls:

I thought so, too. I sure hope he’s coming back.

I just remembered that too and edited my own post to include Thomas Wayne Jr (or Owlman) bu yeah I think that’s incredibly possible.

Gotham had one of the best season finales this year!

May 24, 2016 at 12:38 am #324367Jiminy’s JournalParticipantOh, I’m pretty sure they used the same soundbite from “The Blind Fortune-Teller.” Cameron probably wasn’t available, so they had to keep him blurred.
Evil!Bruce makes things confusing. But that sure explains the picture of David with the long hair. Clone? Batzarro? Long-lost, evil twin Thomas Wayne, Jr? Dr. Jekyll’s red serum? Something to do with that gas? Another Clayface? Bruce Wayne from another Earth? Apparently, in the comics, Tommy Elliot gets plastic surgery to look like Bruce?
Also, reminder: Tomorrow, the Joker’s identity is revealed in the comics.

So long as the show has worked something out with Cameron so that this tease comes to something meaningful in S3, that’s fine with me.

Seriously. We do not want a repeat of the Lex Vader incident.
Also, Gotham’s Facebook page gave us a closer look at Batclone:
By the way, RG, you’re gonna hate me for this, but I think we might get some form of batsuit next year. I just have this feeling. Basically:
Alfred (who by this point has given up): Alright, but you’re gonna need some type of armor! I’m sure Lucius can make something.
Lucius: Umm, sure.
Selina: Ooh, can mine be cat-themed!?
Alfred: Now, hold on —
Bruce: Ooh, I want mine to be bat-themed!
Bruce and Selina: Yeah!
Alfred: So, this is the new normal.
Later:
Selina sees a whip in Stately Wayne Manor. She picks it up.
Bruce: Oh, Galavant left that, when he tried to kill me.
Selina: I’m keeping it.
Bruce: Whatevs. I’m more of a boomerang guy, myself.
May 24, 2016 at 2:22 pm #324376thedarkonedearieParticipantOk so this episode was all over the place and I have a pretty mixed bag of feelings towards it. Overall though, I was kind of let down, and I sort of knew I would be.
Liked:
– Nygma. I too could watch him play that game for an entire episode. The actor really is nailing the part.
– Jerome tease at the end.
– Clayface. It was so silly, but I enjoyed it. And I kind of liked that it was Barbara who knew it wasn’t him. Love can be very telling.
– Freeze and Firefly fight. However, I would have rather had Firefly defending her friend because she remembered who Selina actually was. It would have made for a more emotional fight.
– B.D. Wong was especially great I thought throughout.
– Fish Mooney. I love how over the top she is. It fits with Gotham. And I like she actually has a super power now. I thought they were just going to kill her off, but looks like she’ll be a major player again.
Mixed:
– Court of Owls. I just don’t know much about them so I’m not super excited about delving further into who actually orchestrated Bruce’s parents’ deaths and who actually controls the city.
Disliked:
– Strange’s demise. It felt clunky. I can’t believe he wasn’t able to set the bomb off and get out of there. It took forever. And then how he got zapped by Firefly and Freeze……no real payoff here. I get they can’t kill him either, but it was just too easy and by the end of it, I was hoping he would carry over to the next season. Since he was arrested, I don’t think he will be. Although, I suppose it is rather fitting that his experiments were his downfall.
– Another huge hiccup from Strange was him even mentioning this “court” to Jim. Because now, Bruce and Jim know there’s a higher up group responsible for everything. Clunky and stupid for a smart scientist.
– Penguin. My have the mighty fallen. The best character of Gotham has quickly become one of the worst. What happened to learning his origin story? How he gets his umbrella? How he truly becomes The Penguin? His story this season was pathetic, especially in the back half, and for him to resurface in the finale only to faint from Fish’s touch, was a letdown. He had no part in the bigger plot of the season and that’s just too bad.
– Bruce clone at the end? Literally nothing comes to mind. And if there is something I’m missing, it’s gotta be something minor from Batman lore that I am unaware of. Dumb tease. Would have been way better if it was Jerome laughing with crazy makeup on.
– Water defusing a bomb? Okay…..Thanks for the hint that you didn’t mean to even give Ms. Peabody. So neither she or Strange died. Lame.
– Lucius is just a horribly flat character. I don’t know what they were doing introducing him this season. He served zero purpose other than fixing the machine in the Wayne Manor cave/basement. Like what a snooze fest.
– Why didn’t Bruce and Lucius die? Why did Strange turn it off and interrupt Nygma? Why keep them alive? Maybe he did once care about Bruce’s father, and he’s maybe not that cruel to kill a child, but at the end of the day when all was going to Hell, he ordered all the captives to be killed. So why he kept them alive, I don’t understand.
– Gordon leaving to find Leigh. Ok, as RG pointed out, this needed to be done 5 episodes ago. Now the city is running with monsters and now you decide to leave? Good lord.
Overall some good parts, but also very clunky, an anti-climactic demise for Hugo Strange, virtual non-involvement for Penguin, and a bizarre “tease” at the very end. A somewhat disappointing finale to an otherwise much better second season.

The more I think about it, the more this bothers me. I get having to work Leigh back into the story for S3, but surely there’s a better way to do it besides sending your main hero out of town literally moments after a bus full of super enhanced villains escape a loony bin?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 24, 2016 at 7:48 pm #324381MatthewPaulModeratorI’m going to guess that the first half of Season 3 will have the title “Villains Unleashed” or something along those lines.
