Yay we’re back! 3×12 “Ghosts”
GENERAL: Mostly pretty okay. A nice return if a little rote (Jim’s conflicted! Lee and Jim are tiresome! Bruce is off doing a thing! Nygma et all are scheming! Strange things happen!). I’m really just looking forward to the Nygmobblepot drama and Jerome’s return.
LIKED
–Oswald Cobblepot uses a flip phone. I find this oddly endearing. (also, your hair is fabulous, darling. Like it always is)
–I think this is the most I’ve liked Selina all series. Suddenly her “tough street girl” shtick makes ALL the sense. It also explains why she’s extremely hesitant to open up with Bruce–abandonment issues.
–“Doesn’t anyone die in Gotham anymore??!”
MIXED
–The ghost idea is interesting since all the characters are metaphorically haunted by their pasts but I think the show missed an opportunity by not getting Carol Kane back as Oswald’s mother; that’s his true “ghost.”
–And speaking of…I’m actually rather surprised that Ed didn’t go the Gertrude route. I mean, yeah, Oswald’s father’s death is traumatic but Ed and Os met and bonded over the death of Kristen/Gertrude. I still think Ed might be playing some sort of long game. His final words to Os before the holidays make me ponder.
DISLIKED
–Lee coming in and demanding that Jim be arrested for Mario’s death in full on Widow’s Weeds. Good gravy but I am so OVER all the Jim/Lee/misc other drama. Like, I just straight up don’t care and the show continues to pay too much attention to this.
–In some ways, Jim was “more like a son to [Falcone] than Mario.” That seems rather hyperbolic.
HOPEFUL THINKING
–All I want right now is one episode where Jerome and Tetch team up for the most mental episode ever.

Pretty much this, although I was fine with Lee wanting Jim arrested (he did just kill Mario, after all). after she spoke with Falcone, I saw her saving Jim at the last minute a mile away.
I think everybody on this show uses flip phones, so that didn’t really stand out to me. As for Gertrude, I don’t think Ed could have gone through with his plan, if he had used her. It would’ve been just too far.

This was absolutely one of my favorite episodes. Wow. Jerome was seriously missed.
Liked:
– Jerome. Period.
– How they gave him his scars.
– Jerome killing Dwight
– The two ladies just playing everyone.
– Selina’s mom being a horrible mother.
– Bruce refusing to fight back against Selina, but showing he’s getting good at defending himself. I actually really liked that scene a lot.
I hated nothing and loved everything. Much better than the episode ghosts. Really starting to get why this is called Mad City. Now if they link Tetch up with Jerome, oh man, that would certainly bring the season together. Please please please….
January 25, 2017 at 9:47 pm #332824RumplesGirlKeymasterMy turn! I finally sat down to watch 3×13 “Smile Like You Mean It.”
GENERAL: Guys.
One of the best episodes of Gotham this season and in the entire series.
No dislikes! Instead a nice list of intense likes:
–Don’t ever get rid of Jerome again, Gotham. It doesn’t do you any favors to pretend like this one time guest star turned phenom isn’t the best part of your show (sorry, Ed. You know I love you)
–“Mayor Crumblepot”
–“Do that disco vampire thing you do with your hair.” This is the most accurate description of Oswald’s hair ever.
–“I’ll just…stay here? If that’s okay? Yeah, that’s okay.”
–“He’s still dead!” “Try turning it on and off” (Dwight and his assistant are like Frankenstein and Igor if Frankenstein and Igor were Abbot and Costello).
–Interesting strategy on the part of Barbara, Tabby, and Ed; using Ed to make Penguin go into full on gangster mode is perfect.
–“Gingers not your type?”
–“I guess I’m just missing one thing, then. Where is my face?”
–Baby!Batman has some nice Future!Batman skills.
–Getting to see how Jerome got his famous Joker scars.
–Jerome’s broadcast.
(Only one episode until April? Booooo)

Couldn’t agree more. I appreciate that we are almost always on the same page with Gotham.
January 27, 2017 at 3:48 pm #332863MatthewPaulModeratorI’m going to rage if they only brought Jerome back to quickly kill him off again by the end of the next episode. Please Gotham, do not repeat the same mistake you made last Season!
January 31, 2017 at 12:47 pm #332915RumplesGirlKeymasterOkay, I haven’t watched yet BUT I did see the promo for the episodes airing in April…
Pretty sure I did some sort of jump-up-and-down screamy thing. Basically the last bits of 3B are going to be @TheDarkOneDearie and I losing our minds every Monday.

Oh man I can’t even……….. I have not been this pumped for the back half of a season in a long time.
And can I just say I loved this midseason finale too. Jerome is just amazing and the actor is amazing. Also, big shout out to David Mazouz. I thought he was so good in this episode. Loved the little fight between Jerome and him in the house of mirrors. Loved the clown makeup on Bruce. Loved everything at the circus basically. The writers really laid it on thick with the differences between Jerome and Bruce and how they view the world and their view on killing.
Also glad Jerome wasn’t killed. They have to bring him back right? I’m sure they will when they are ready. I still really can’t get invested in The Court of Owls but whatever. The rest of this episode I loved. And letting Ed go full Riddler in the back half, and giving him his suit…….oh man I am giddy just thinking about it.
There’s no way Penguin is dead right? They like, can’t do that right bc of canon? So not sure how they will bring him back, but nonetheless, it was a good jumping off point for Ed’s character to now go full evil mode.
Also I love how whenever someone needs to get murdered in cold blood they go to the river haha.
Side note, there were some pretty funny lines that I’m sure @RumplesGirl will pick out. Lines from Jerome, Barbara, Butch, etc that really play into Gotham’s style (dark and creepy but not taking itself too seriously). That’s when Gotham is at its best.
Now the wait til April….
February 1, 2017 at 3:59 pm #332935RumplesGirlKeymasterHere we go! 3×14 “The Gentle Art of Making Enemies”
GENERAL: No, but seriously guys.
This episode was *so good.* Yeah, yeah, yeah, my ship went up in flames (spectacularly) but it was so much fun to watch (I admit this is my super dark ship and even when Ed had Os tied to the hood of the car of his ex-girlfriend I was all “yaaaas, Nygmobblepot!”).
This episode was absolutely bonkers and it works so well for Gotham. The show has finally figured out that what it thought it should be (a gritty crime show that just happened to have comic book figures) is not what it needed to be (a bat guano crazy comic book adaption with such a twisted sense of humor).
Highlights of the very great :
–“I did it because I love you.” (my heart!)
–“You call city hall and literally no one’s in charge. Though that might be good news.”
–Jerome entering Wayne Manor; boy knows how to make an entrance
–“The old noodle is still a little al dente post thaw” That line, tho.
–The dynamic between Bruce and Jerome is perfect. It’s exactly what one of the most famous antagonistic relationships needs to be.
–That tank is full of piranhas, isn’t it? *moments later* Yes. Yes, it is.
–“I underestimated you, Barbara.” “That’s the curse of great beauty.”
–A touch I appreciate: Baby!Batman is wearing black in his fight with Jerome in the Mirror Room
–“I killed Isabelle.” “I’m pretty sure her name is Isabella, but go on.”
–“You’d rather die than give up the man who tried to kill you!?” NYGMOBBLEPOT FOREVER. I SHIP IT UNTIL THE END, Y’ALL.
–I normally don’t appreciate anything to do with Baby!Batman but the moral dilemma Bruce is faces trying to decide if he should kill Jerome or not gets a big applause from me. (“It’s a fine line, Master Bruce, between justice and revenge”) <–I mean. That’s it, right? That’s Batman comics.
–OMG Jerome’s face came off.
–Someone with more indepth knowledge of arcane Batman lore: Uncle Frank? Anything we need to know?
–Imma just quote most of this whole thing and then descend into shipper madness: “Ed. I love you. I know you believe that now….You need me Edward Nygma as I need you. You cannot have one without the other. When I met you, you were a nervous, jittery loser. You were nothing. I created Edward Nygma. And I am the only one who truly sees you as you are. Who you can still become.”
I think that is such a big reason why I and so many others ship Nygmobblepot. These are two horrible, despicable villains but they are also two very broken people. But they see each other’s brokenness and love it, not hate it. Kristen couldn’t love Ed when she learned what kind of man he was; everyone sees Oswald as a freak or a nobody. But they *see* each other. I think Ed is caught up in what he thinks he needs to do instead of acting on what he really feels. Isabella represented the kind of life Ed wanted–the one where he’s not a sociopath. When she died, Ed thought he could never have those sorts of feeling again but that’s where he’s wrong. Ed does love Os and maybe it’s not romantic, but you can tell that Oswald’s speech got to him. “Killing” Os is like killing the last part of Ed that makes him human; he’s trying to shut out those feelings of love, friendship, and humanity (hence the promo showing Ed has gone full on looney tunes). But…the twist? Of course Os isn’t really dead. What does that mean for Ed? I dunno but I am totally here for it.
–Also, Robin Lord Taylor’s delivery of “say something” sorta broke me. And Cory Michael Smith doesn’t get enough credit on this show. I cannot WAIT for the Riddler episodes of 3B!
