I’m the King of Gothaaaaaaaaaam!
And with that, this season comes to end–possibly forever so far as I’m concerned. I might be checking out the first episode of S2 but right now, I can’t see myself sticking around.
–Mob war escalates but is it too late for me to be invested? Why is Falcone leaving Gotham now? Hadn’t he decided to stay at the mid season finale? Why the change?
–Fish. Freaking. Mooney. Please GO AWAY. How did she survive getting shot in the stomach? And where did she get the new clothes and hair do and why was she even MORE annoying tonight than normal?
–Selina Kyle joins up with Fish because….”we ain’t children.” *sigh* The dialogue
–Baby Batman takes another step to becoming Batman. Except there is no drama or intensity to it. I know what he’s about to become. We all do. There’s no mystery because in so many ways, he’s already Batman.
–They had all season to make Barbara interesting and they finally manage to make her something more than the character that makes me want to poke my eyes out. I like the idea that Barbara is maybe Harley Quinn or something. But, again, is it too late? Do I really care after finding her so tiresome all season?
–Still don’t care about Gordon. Still wish they’d stop wasting Donal Logue.
–Penguin and Nygma are great, and I’m finding the latter to be 20000x more interesting than the former.
I guess to sum this up: it was a much better episode than what we’ve gotten almost all season, but I just don’t know if I care at this point.

(I just love the look of the show as a whole, the aesthetic, the lighting, the cinematography, so it’s always fun to look at for me, even if other parts of an ep might be lacking.)
Why is Falcone leaving Gotham now? Hadn’t he decided to stay at the mid season finale? Why the change?
I didn’t really get the sudden change either, seemed OOC for an uber successful Mob Boss to just up and run away with his tail between his legs.
That being said, I did like the moment between him and Jim and talking about his father. I don’t always connect with Jim, (but sidenote: he was pretty awesome in that gunfight scene), but I still think they’ve done a good job of giving him shades of grey. He’s not just this do gooder cop who’s gonna strut in and save the city, he’s had to compromise his principles a bit, do things he shouldn’t, get in bed with underworld figures. He was an idealist who got a reality check, but he’s still got aspirations of saving the city even if the job seems impossible.
Baby Batman takes another step to becoming Batman. Except there is no drama or intensity to it. I know what he’s about to become. We all do. There’s no mystery because in so many ways, he’s already Batman.
Knowing where he ends up doesn’t bother me. We have an idea where almost all of the characters will end up, but I still like seeing how they got there.
The Bruce and Alfred scenes were totally disconnected from the rest of the ep, but I liked how eventually they had the “stoic” callback to the previous ep that caused him to crack the mystery. It makes me more intrigued by Lucius Fox, who was obviously trying to drop the hint and steer Bruce in a particular direction so he’ll be able to carry on his father’s work, which it seems was a very secret part of his life. It makes me eager to see what exactly is down in that cave, and to see more of Lucius.
They had all season to make Barbara interesting and they finally manage to make her something more than the character that makes me want to poke my eyes out. I like the idea that Barbara is maybe Harley Quinn or something. But, again, is it too late? Do I really care after finding her so tiresome all season?
I think they were probably taken by surprise by how much ire the fandom had for the character, so took a timeout mid way through to come up with another direction to take her character. It worked on me, over the last few eps I’ve felt some real sympathy for her, and genuinely hoped she’d be OK, which is quite the turnaround from not being bothered if I never saw her again. I was fearing for Leslie’s safety during this ep, (again, another part of the ep that was disconnected from everything else), because Barbara seemed too chill. Then she calmly revealed how she’d been the one to slaughter her parents, then she picked up the big knife and yikes!
Guess there won’t be a Baby!Batgirl in this universe, because I don’t see Jim sleeping with Barbara ever again.
Oswald declaring himself “king” at the end made me chuckle, because a king penguin is an actual thing. Almost wanted to yell at him to shut up when he was spilling his guts to Falcone earlier. Was a bit of a callback to the previous ep where that hitman told Oswald that he never understood telling a person something right before you kill them. Seriously Oswald, if you want to kill him, just kill him, don’t waste time with the excessive gloating! But sometimes Oswald does know just the right thing to say, like when he pointed out to Fish that Maroni wouldn’t have a use for her, which kicked off that whole exchange that led to Maroni’s death. Desperate and crafty Oswald is desperately crafty. Frankly I’m surprised Fish didn’t put a bullet in Maroni earlier, dude dug himself a deeeep grave in the space of just a few minutes.
Had a feeling they’d “kill Fish off” without showing a body, juuuuuust in case some day they do want to bring her back for a guest spot, but if they don’t, it was still a good exit for her.
Could have done without Selina working for Fish, but on the other hand I reckon Selina observing Fish for a couple of weeks taught her some things that will help form her into Catwoman one day.
My fave part of the ep was probably the scene where we saw inside Ed’s head, (again, totally disconnected from everything else going on). It took me a second to figure out what was going on, but once I caught on it was pretty chilling. Is this a new evolution in his level of crazy, or has it always sounded like that inside his head? I think they’ve done a good job of scattering tidbits of him being odd through the season, working up to this finale moment where we see exactly how unhinged he is.
Anyway, it wasn’t a perfect ep, but overall I’d say I enjoyed it. It’s not left me wanting to curl up on the floor in agony over the long hiatus ahead, but it has left me intrigued to see what’s in store next season.
May 5, 2015 at 8:29 am #303821RumplesGirlKeymasterI agree that the best scene (of favorite I guess) was Nygma’s breakdown at the end. If there was one element that might keep me coming back it would be him. I find him fascinating and wish the writers would give him more to do.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 5, 2015 at 1:34 pm #303860MatthewPaulModeratorI feel where the writing for the show took a dive was that point where the Season got extended from 16 episodes to 22. They developed Season 1 with those initial 16 episodes in mind, and then had to pad when they got the additional 6 episodes. It’s also clear that the writers had “shiny toy syndrome”, as RG would call it, by introducing so many Batman villains so fast. They’re even giving OUAT a run for its money, in regards to how many villains are crammed into one Season. I think we could have had a stronger Season had they kept it to 16 episodes, honestly. We likely wouldn’t have had the whole Fish/Dollmaker storyline and the Scarecrow storyline. Losing those storylines wouldn’t have been a tragedy, especially when that Dollmaker storyline just screamed filler. You’re not missing anything if you just skip the Dollmaker storyline and cut to Fish’s return to Gotham. It’s interesting that this is the opposite of what happened with Agents of SHIELD. Agents of SHIELD started weak, but improved during the 2nd half of its 1st Season. Gotham started out strong, but grew weaker by the end of the Season.
As for the finale, it was definitely a mixed bag. I enjoyed watching it, but I acknowledge the flaws. A lot of the problems RG mentioned are the same ones I have. Cat working for Fish just came out of nowhere. I personally cheered when Penguin tossed Fish off the building, and I’m hoping she “stays” dead. Jada Pinkett Smith only signed up for 1 year, and isn’t set to return for Season 2. It seemed like Fish’s sole purpose was to serve the rise of the Penguin arc, and now that he’s “the new King of Gotham”, is there really any more use for the character? The Barbara and Leslie scenes were uncomfortable to watch, as there was clear tension between the two given their love for the same man. Though I did find the psychopathic twist to Barbara being her parents’ true murder intriguing. I agree with RG and Phee that Nygma’s schizophrenic scene was one of the best scenes. FOX definitely overhyped the reveal that Bruce finds about his parents, as their promo basically already spoiled that it was a secret passageway of some sort, and not much else was clarified when we did see the full scene.
I can only hope that they can make improvements for Gotham’s 2nd Season. Seeing Nygma’s further transformation into the Riddler would be fun. I also definitely want to see the Jerome/Joker storyline expanded, as his episode was one of the strongest of the 1st Season by far.
May 5, 2015 at 4:13 pm #303888obisgirlParticipantIsn’t it too early for Bruce to discover the Bat Cave? He’s not even out of puberty yet.
Hopefully, Selena’s hair goes back to normal for season two. I did not like that look on her.
How the heck did Fish survive from the island to Gotham? Seems like she should have died on en route to the city. And yet somewhere in between, had time for a fashion makeover just as Gotham’s mob war starts.
I am disappointed in Falcone’s storyline. Last we saw him, he wanted to clean up the city and the finale, he took the old man trope and said, it’s time for me to retire already. I’m getting too old for this stuff.
I look forward to seeing two. Ngyma’s spiral…man…
When Penguin declared himself king of Gotham, I had a Titanic flashback. I’m King of the World!
May 5, 2015 at 4:34 pm #303893WickedRegalParticipantFISH!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please, please, please, please come back!!! You’re too strong, you’re too much of a survivor to go down, I mean, got dangit, you flew a helicopter with a bullet in your gut, you gouged your own eye out in rebellion, you were the only one to take power on that hellish island, and you were the only one to successfully escape! FISH, a push over a ledge could not be how you went out, I’m holding out faith that if Gotham gets to Season 3, Fish Mooney shall return!
Barbra…Barbra…Barbra…Barbra….you crazy psychotic looney tune…I just…I never liked her! Thank God that Leslie has some hands on her, and swept the floor with that wretch! #TeamLeslie
Nygma….he’s one of the most complex and interesting characters, and I agree…that breakdown scene was one of the best scenes in the finale, it really began the journey into the Riddler I think.
Selina…I think for those two weeks, Fish served as the mother figure that Selina never had, and I agree that perhaps having Fish’s guidance snuck most of the traditional Catwoman characteristics into Selina.
And Alfred….I just appreciate this character so much! And Bruce has discovered the BatCave….so my question now is….was his father a vigilante as well?

"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 5, 2015 at 9:27 pm #303924Ranisha PittsParticipantThere was a lot crammed in the finale for just an hour I felt it needed another hour or at least 30 minutes.
I stand in the minority, that i loved FISH one of my faves, she such an amazing versatile African American villain that I just appreciate that about her. Except I can help but say FISH is not a FISH she is a TIGER or Lioness. I don’t get the name because she is anything but a fish. If I have to say if she a FISH then she is a tiger shark.
Also She reminds me of Tina Turner in Mad Max beyond the Thunder-doom
starts singing we don’t need another Hero. I think Mad Max was the reason I beg my mom to take me to meet TINA TURNER house when I was preschool age. YEP I had problems that started way back then.
Anyway back to MS. FISH. I thought her death was anti-climatic. In all honesty if FISH was to have a powerful death it should have been at the hands of BUTCH. I know its cruel of me to say but that is the most shocking and powerful Death that FISH could down with. Her being pushed by Penquin was very anti-climatic.
BAT and CAT what can I say I adore the little muchkins. However I think CAT is a little to violent to soon. I think its just far to early for her to go KILL or be KILL, more like BEAT or BE BEAT. That is the stage I expect her to be. I also like Cat working for Fish. My theory was FISH is the one who helped train CAT in the workings of the underworld.
Barbara: I don’t like Her still dont like her put her in the mental ward. I fear they may go Harly Q with her and I’m not sure how I feel about that at one point its clever twist but at another point. COME on I think Harley if not the same age as Bruce might be younger. So I Like the twist and I don’t like the twist. Harley should be a prissy perfectionist honor roll student at Bruce private school.
Penguin: I Love this guy. But I do not think he should have killed FISH. The weasel has power now but I just don’t think he has it in him to sustained it.
Falcone: What happen, you lost your spark or did you not just want to die? Or is this just a ploy to work things behind the scenes?
Maroni: The Lady said don’t call her BABE.
Nygma: Hmmmmmmmmmmmm I love this character but I fear for his obsession.
Gordon: I Like him but he is not my favorite but I like him haven’t figured out what I like about him yet?
Harvey: “We’re COOL.”
Overall I enjoyed the finale but I think they should have just focus on the mob war aspect and some how connect BRUCE into the fallout like he showed up at the wrong place or wrong time. Or maybe he thought he found a lead on his parents killer and went to track that down and ended up in that warehouse because he was looking for CAT.
Bat cave could have been saved for season 2.
ALSO CAN I SAY HOW UNETHICAL IT WAS FOR the DOC to offer trauma counseling to her current boyfriends ex-fiance, not to mention that was beyond her scope of specialty. BOUNDARIES and code of ethics people. And see why we have boundaries and code of ethics, her client tried to kill her!
Overall I will be tuning in for season 2.

May 6, 2015 at 10:41 am #303957obisgirlParticipantSo even after Barbara gets a mildly interesting storyline, we still don’t like her. LOL!!
Yeah, too little, too late. I wouldn’t mind if she were locked up for all of season 2 in Arkham. Her scenes prior to the last three episodes before the finale were so bland and randomly placed within the story that they often did not relate at all to the overall storyline.
But she does play a psycho very well.
I’m not sure if she becomes Harley, but we’ll see.
Is Oswald the new crime boss of Gotham now? Maroni’s dead, Falcone retired, Fish is dead.
