Oh, and is it just me, or does Greg know a bit too much? As in, he didn’t tell Emma that he saw anything, heck, he risked his licence by saying he was texting! But he was very quick to call this other person and tell her/him something interesting…Now, I’m also not sure what was it that this person “wasn’t going to believe in” – was it that he saw some magic (which excuse me, but I highly doubt, that ball of fire was hardly visible from behind of Rumple’s hand! especially at that car speed!) OR that he saw Rumple or Hook and that was what was so interesting? Maybe he was looking for one of them for ages?
I think Greg was very purposefully looking for SB. I think “Her” knows what he was searching for. So his, “You’ll never believe what I saw,” was along the lines of, “I found them, we were right!” That could play into him having been from a magical land, and once he was in our world, he was seeking out magic here. Depending on who he was, where he was, and when he came back to our world, he may have even had knowledge of the curse, and that could be the reason he was trying to track everyone down.
Like EvilQueen, I also felt Greg knew way more than he let on to Emma, as evidenced when he spoke with HER on the phone. I don’t think anything random happens on this show, and I don’t think he’s just some “average Joe’ as Emma said to her parents. I agree that it’s most likely the case that Greg has been deliberately searching for Storybrooke for a long time, and when the curse broke, he seized the opportunity to trace the magic. Like Phee, I took his “You’ll never believe what I just saw” as confirmation that he was reporting back to HER. Maybe he was confirming that he’d found magic or magical characters. I think they’re both from another land, but they somehow ended up in our land, on the other side of the SB boundary. They want to get to SB though because they want to find a way home.

Well here’s what I find rather odd. All his outgoing calls are from Pennsylvania, some as inland as Erie. Yet all his pictures show him on the east coast. Doesn’t make any sense. So, we have NO area codes or numbers linking him to the coastline nor do they show him travelling from Pennsylvania to Maine.
As I was getting towards the end of the list, searching the codes, I thought, “Please let one be from outside PA, just to mix it up.” I did find it interesting that the final one is for “New Castle”. All the others had a compass bearing, but that one just straight up said “Pittsburgh, New Castle”. If we’re thinking he is from Pittsburgh, because that’s where the repeated number is from, then it’s interesting to see that paired up with “New Castle.” New monarch? New ruler of a new land? We have a Newcastle here in Australia, but it’s all the one world, so it stuck out to me that the PA one is spelled as two separate words, especially when castles are kind of a thing on this show.
The reference to New Castle and there being a monarch would fit nicely with my theory that HER stands for Her Evil Royalty (a reference to the band HIM when on tour in the USA). If Greg serves an evil monarch, as I suspect he may, his reporting to a phone number associated with the word castle could be a big hint in that direction.
Phee wrote: My fave theory right now for this guy is the Wizard theory, which would fit quite well, if he’s someone from our world, who has interacted with a magical land, then come back, and is searching to find a remnant of a magical land in our world. In such a scenario, I’m imagining that “Her” is Dorothy, because she’d be someone who has had similar experiences to him, and would understand his current mission, so they’d make a good pair IMO.
I really like the theory of Greg being the professor who ended up as the Wizard of Oz. However, I’d wager that HER might refer to some evil ruler rather than Dorothy. By calling HER “honey” it would be very interesting if the “wizard” and the evil ruler he serves have a romantic relationship of convenience, sort of like Rumple and Cora did at one point. While the wizard is traditionally, a “nice guy” he did lie to everyone in Oz about being “great and all-powerful.” His agenda may in fact be to learn the art of magic from Rumple. The fact that the “wizard” of Oz didn’t have actual magic may have made him obsessed with acquiring it. Perhaps the ruler he serves is actually a witch, who was without magic while stranded in our world, but could sense it when Rumple brought it over (similar to how the BF confirmed she could feel magic’s presence in SB in 2×1).

It’s super blurry on the screencap, and I hadn’t originally noticed it when I was making them, but up the top right corner it seems to say “2 weeks ago”, so those pics may not have been taken on his east coast trip.
For argument’s sake, let’s say that the photos were taken on his trip from PA to Maine. PA is landlocked except for Lake Erie to the west and the Delaware River to the east. All the photos featuring Greg actually support a sea-themed trip up the coast. There is actually an obvious picture of him in front of a seafood restaurant that lists several items found on the coast, including lobster, crab, and shellfish. In fact, all this seafood listed makes me wonder if he isn’t from under the sea! Could he be a merman? ๐ก

Thanks for that little nugget of gold! The fisherman seems to corroborate the notical theme of him being from “under the sea” origionally and then having been stranded in our world when the curse hit. Maybe he wasn’t stranded in SB, but instead traveled by sea to our world though an underwater portal!
In fact, all the pictures of Greg suggest an ocean theme: the seafood restaurant, the harbor, and the seaman! Of course, the photos could just be further confirmation that he was in fact traveling up the Eastern seaboard on his way to ME and took lots of pictures, rather then a hint that he himself is from the sea.

These guys created lost….for all we know those numbers may not be revealed till the very end, that’s how Lost went. We got thrown numbers that kept being repeated the ENTIRE show and bam it was towards the end that it was all like “Yeah this is what they mean and they still don’t have tons of significance”
I think it’s all just to drive us nuts.
January 21, 2013 at 5:50 pm #169433PriceofMagicParticipantWhy would he have his wife/girlfriend/whatever listed as HER? Maybe “Honey” could be her real name. I think either HER is initials or her name is so obvious such as perhaps Dorothy that it would give away who Greg really is. Maybe she has him listed as HIM then you have Him and Her.
Crackpot theory: Her is Winnie the Pooh. Would go with the “honey” pet name.
All magic comes with a price!

I adore this theory, but that could be because I’m desperate for some merfolk on this show already! ๐ But considering this, plus the comment someone made earlier about him eating NO SEAFOOD…. Well, he wouldn’t if he were a merman, right? ‘Cause those would be his friends. Secondly, do we know if/where the “line” is under the sea? We saw Cora and Hook appear in a boat, and obviously Storybrooke is on the coast which begs the question if those magical creatures in the sea might be more free to move about than those on land.
January 21, 2013 at 8:35 pm #169485kalliopekiseesParticipantInteresting… why all the sea / fish pictures? I believe nothing is “by accident” on Once.

My father rarely eats fish, and we live in New England. I’m cautious about fish because I have seafood allergies. So that one doesn’t strike me as too odd.
January 21, 2013 at 10:38 pm #169506wewerecursedParticipantI prefer the idea that he’s just a normal guy. Making him a fairy tale character would be too easy, too obvious. No, I’m guessing he really is just a normal person, and that would be much more interesting.

I keep telling him he has to leave me a wealthy widow with that diet …. but so far no changes.

I understand that people have allergies or don’t care for seafood but we are talking about K&H here and Once Upon a Time. There’s a reason for the photos. Just like when they showed us the newspaper clipping about local boy finding baby in the newspaper. Very big clue that AWB was Pino.
Same with these photos. Why show his love of food, pics of nothing but beef two weeks prior to his crash, then pics of him touring the eastern coastline, standing by a seafood menu YET not one single pic of a seafood meal or any meal for that matter! That’s the first thing you’d think would be there. First thing that comes to mind when someone is going to the east coast is that they can’t wait for the fresh seafood and shellfish. These pics are there for a reason and point to something.

January 22, 2013 at 1:21 am #169521nemertesParticipantKay, folks. This is hitting close to home, literally– 724 is my home area code. ๐ I lived not far from New Castle, so I’m pretty familiar with the town. Nothing in particular about New Castle jumps out at me — but looking at the list on a whole, I notice they all have the Beaver & Erie Canals in common. (either by location or influence) This fits nicely with the Merman theory.
January 22, 2013 at 3:34 am #169548carolanneParticipantI love reading all the different theories, and each one seems to have merit. My first impression was that Greg might be a travelling food critic (may explain pics of food in his phone), and that HER on his phone might be his female boss – one he intensely dislikes. I can imagine him hearing his phone ring and thinking, ‘Oh great, it’s HER again,’ so that’s how he assigns his boss as a contact. Also, it isn’t certain that he was talking to HER at the end. Actually, we don’t know who he contacted. Honey could be a girlfriend, wife, or even a daughter. What he said he saw could be anyone, or any thing. We’ll all be guessing for the next few weeks.
Honestly, I don’t know who Greg really is, or where he really comes from. I’ll only quote what Henry said when he brought his story book to the table.
“Frankenstein isn’t in here. It’s not even a fairy tale. That means it comes from another land with different stories. If the curse went to places with other stories, then who knows who else is in this town?”
