Hey everyone! You might be onto something with the under-the-sea/merman idea. When Emma goes to interrogate him, did you notice that he immediately asks for a drink?
…OK. It’s a stretch. But maybe he’s uncomfortable without water or being far from the sea for long periods.
And maybe he doesn’t eat seafood because, well, he is a fish or fish-like.
…(shrugs)
Keep up the theorizing!

There was also the reference to Splash at the beginning when Grumpy was talking about what outsiders might do to the people of Storybrooke if they found out about the town. It would definitely be ironic if the person coming into town was actually a merman.
However, I’m not sure of a famous underwater story that could fit in with the casting call. My first thought was that he could be working for Ariel, and Her was the reference to her, but I can’t see someone working for Ariel that might potentially be a big bad for next season.

Why would he have his wife/girlfriend/whatever listed as HER? Maybe “Honey” could be her real name. I think either HER is initials or her name is so obvious such as perhaps Dorothy that it would give away who Greg really is. Maybe she has him listed as HIM then you have Him and Her.
One of my friends calls her hubby “Sir” as a nickname, instead of using his actual name. She said she’s had people think it’s really weird, but it’s just a little in joke nickname thing, certainly not an indication that she considers him a higher rank than her or anything. So Greg calling his significant other “Her” doesn’t seem that weird to me, and I can see that it could just be a nickname, (which conveniently hides her identity on the show for now).

I adore this theory, but that could be because I’m desperate for some merfolk on this show already! 😉 But considering this, plus the comment someone made earlier about him eating NO SEAFOOD…. Well, he wouldn’t if he were a merman, right? ‘Cause those would be his friends. Secondly, do we know if/where the “line” is under the sea? We saw Cora and Hook appear in a boat, and obviously Storybrooke is on the coast which begs the question if those magical creatures in the sea might be more free to move about than those on land.
I’ve been wondering about that ever since we saw Hook go underwater to get to Neverland. Does that mean that the different worlds, (including our own) are physically connected in some way, if you can travel through the ocean (or the ground as Bae did) to get from one to the other? Recent discussions on here have got me pretty much convinced that when we meet merfolk, they’ll be in the Mermaid Lagoon in Neverland, but we’ve also seen Regina mention a mermaid to Rumple, so they must be known in FTL. If one lives in a particular environment that’s conducive to portals, does that mean you have easy access to multiple worlds? I’m really eager to see how they handle merfolk on the show, though I think they’ve said recently there’s no Ariel planned for this season. They’ve certainly dropped hints though, including Grumpy mentioning Splash in this latest ep.

Interesting… why all the sea / fish pictures? I believe nothing is “by accident” on Once.
Pittsburgh Press published a paper on the Mendel / Fisher Controversy.
Just googled that and the pdf of the report is 16 pages long, so here’s the wikipedia one paragraph summary instead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Mendel#Controversy

Kay, folks. This is hitting close to home, literally– 724 is my home area code. 🙂 I lived not far from New Castle, so I’m pretty familiar with the town. Nothing in particular about New Castle jumps out at me — but looking at the list on a whole, I notice they all have the Beaver & Erie Canals in common. (either by location or influence) This fits nicely with the Merman theory.
Interesting. I hadn’t looked up a map yet to compare the locations, (have driven through parts of PA a few times, but not really familiar with the layout of the place). Wikipedia has a page for the PA Canals which includes a map that shows the cities in his call list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Canal

Honestly, I don’t know who Greg really is, or where he really comes from. I’ll only quote what Henry said when he brought his story book to the table.
“Frankenstein isn’t in here. It’s not even a fairy tale. That means it comes from another land with different stories. If the curse went to places with other stories, then who knows who else is in this town?”
Yes, the inclusion of that scene in this ep in particular is what makes me certain that Greg is from another storybook world that we’re yet to see.
January 22, 2013 at 5:35 am #169567JosephineParticipantI like that they used every area code in PA. I recognized the Western PA area codes, because one is mine, but I froze the screen and got out my phone book and they used every single one. So you can’t pinpoint one area of the state.
was getting towards the end of the list, searching the codes, I thought, “Please let one be from outside PA, just to mix it up.” I did find it interesting that the final one is for “New Castle”. All the others had a compass bearing, but that one just straight up said “Pittsburgh, New Castle”. If we’re thinking he is from Pittsburgh, because that’s where the repeated number is from, then it’s interesting to see that paired up with “New Castle.” New monarch? New ruler of a new land? We have a Newcastle here in Australia, but it’s all the one world, so it stuck out to me that the PA one is spelled as two separate words, especially when castles are kind of a thing on this show.
I wouldn’t read anything into the New Castle one. The area code isn’t just New Castle like that list someone posted says, it’s overlaid over a wide portion of Western PA including where I live, and I’m probably two hours away from New Castle.
I read somewhere, and I can’t remember what site it was on, that he’s from Lancaster, PA, which could mean the county or the town. For those of your not familiar with PA the town is located southeast of Harrisburg. My uncle lived out there and we used to get a kick out of some of the town names in Lancaster County….they have the town of Intercourse and then there is the town of Blue Ball. We used to giggle all the time about them. Mature, I know.
But maybe he really is from Pittsburgh. Ooohh, maybe he was talking to me. I’m the “Her” on the phone. Muuuhhahhahahaha. 😈 😆

Maybe Her is Ursula and Greg is one of the little eel spies.

Aw, thanks forgot about Ursula. I’m still guessing that because Lana loves the character so much that when they finally do The Little Mermaid, Regina is going to double as both the Evil Queen and Ursula. I could be wrong though.

Good thought, I love your theory. Since they are called Flotsam and Jetsam in the movie, Flotsam would be very fitting for Greg if we consider the way he arrived in Storbrook. If he was one of them, it would also make him to a true outsider in the best sense of the word as he not only came from outside Storybrook but the morays were outsiders in “Little Mermaid” too.

… with my theory that HER stands for Her Evil Royalty (a reference to the band HIM when on tour in the USA). If Greg serves an evil monarch, as I suspect he may, his reporting to a phone number associated with the word castle could be a big hint in that direction.
I really would love Ursula to appear on the show, she is one of my all-time favorite Disney villains. In the Broadway version and I belive in an early draft of the movie as well, she was imagined as Triton’s sister, which would maker her evil royalty. That would fit nicely into your theory slurpeez. 😀

January 22, 2013 at 8:01 pm #169623angiebelleParticipantI think Greg is honestly an ordinary guy who decided to go exploring. I don’t think there should be any more random story characters wandering our world- it would require too many loop holes in the curse. Besides, that storyline has been done already with August. I want to see what happens when someone from our world discovers Storybrooke. That is more interesting to me than having him have an Enchanted Forest identity.
I think “Her” is just a joking label for his significant other…I knew someone once who referred to his wife as “She Whom Must be Obeyed.”
January 23, 2013 at 12:29 am #169635swanning-offParticipantShe Who Must Be Obeyed or the abbreviated SWMBO is from John Mortimor’s Rumpole of the Bailey series.
January 23, 2013 at 12:56 am #169638angiebelleParticipantOh! I didn’t know that. At any rate, it was used in the same joking way.
