Since it is Mother’s Day (at least, as the greeting card companies tell us), I thought I’d start a topic on the various Mother-Child relationships in OUAT.
Which one is your favorite? Which is your least?
I’d have to say the obvious least favorite would be Cora and Regina, but for me, I’m going to go with Jimminy and his mother. Cora thought she was doing right by Regina (even though she was’nt), and Regina thinks the same (mostly) for Henry. Jimminy’s mama seemed like she didn’t care (“Let us do the thinking for you”.) Cora was awful, but at least she tried to convince Regina to think her way rather than say outright she’ll do all the thinking for her.
I’ll also skip the obvious choices of a favorite Momma and child, such as Henry and Emma, or Snow and Emma, and go for another unusual one–Charming and Ruth. While her willingness to give up James seems a little cold, she really seemed to love Charming and want the best for him and she was so warm to Snow. And she was willing to die just so that Snow could be cured of being barren so Snow could have children. In retrospect though, I think it once again inadvertently implies adoption just isn’t as good as biological children, because really, Snow and Charming might have said “no Mom, don’t die….we can adopt.” Anyway, the downside of FTL where there aren’t options like egg donations or a surrogate, so Charming’s mom has to sacrifice her life for the Charmings to get Emma.
So Happy Mother’s Day to all the momma’s (and others who have primary care for a child, however that child came into your life–just hope you didn’t have to deal with a Rumpel to do it!).

And then, they needed that bonding time again later in the Enchanted Forest. That nursery scene in Lady of the Lake was the first time I cried watching a Once Upon a Time episode. It was so beautiful.
I feel like, if Cora hadn’t been so power hungry to begin with, she wouldn’t have torn out her heart and probably would have had a very long mother/daughter relationship with Regina. That big smile Barbara Hershey gave Regina after she put her heart back pretty much validates the above. In that way, I feel bad for Cora because she had just let love in sooner, she would have been a happier person. Regina too, maybe.
I have the Once Upon a Time fairytale book and stepmothers especially, do not get a good reputation in the old fairytales. I don’t have step-parents but my friends do, and it’s just sad that step-parents get the π πΏ person label from these stories.
Jiminy’s parents were the worst. As awesome an episode it was, I still don’t understand why he couldn’t just run away once he got older. I mean, he wasn’t able to escape his parents for 40 or so years? π π

Exactly, Cora had taken her heart out–Jimminy is a poor doormat of a guy because his parents reared him to be a tool for them. That is how bad a job they did.

May 12, 2013 at 4:35 pm #193363timespacerParticipantBoth of your choices are very good ones! I would probably also pick Jiminy and his parents as my least favorite. Even though he didn’t seem to know exactly what the potion would do before it was used, it seemed pretty clear that he had reason to believe it would do some kind of harm. By comparison, I can’t picture Bae taking similar action against Rumple, or Henry against Regina.
As for Ruth giving up James, I always assumed they were so poor that it was their only way to prevent both of their children from starving. So she gave him up thinking it was the best thing for him (and for David), just as Emma did for Henry.
For my favorite pick, I started to be conventional and pick Emma and Henry because we’ve seen so much of them together, but then I decided to pick Regina and Henry. The dramatic tension introduced by the fact that they both love each other despite being on opposite sides in the Good vs Evil battle, and Regina’s attempts at reform, add so much complexity to the characters that I find it fascinating.
May 12, 2013 at 4:58 pm #193367PriceofMagicParticipantCinderella and Alexandra- She made a deal with Rumple for her first born without realising it then tried to wriggle out of it. In Storybrooke, she maced Mr Gold in the eyes so that she could get the contract. Would she have done the same thing if she’d had her real memories and also knew that Mr Gold was Rumplestiltskin? It’s a shame we didn’t see a small scene of her at least concerned that Rumple may come after her for macing him in the eyes.
Jiminy and his mother- I think if Jiminy had been more like his parents they would’ve gotten on extremely well. His parents lived by the code “If you’re not the one doing the taking, you’re the one being taken from” whereas Jiminy was a lot more moral. Question is, how did Jiminy know the difference between right and wrong when he was being raised to steal from others. Nature vs nurture?
Milah and Bae- How much input did Milah have in Bae’s upbringing and how much of it was down to Rumple before she left permenantly? She was looking at Bae lovingly before Rumple returned from the ogre wars but was quick to palm Bae off to Rumple when he admitted that he had injured himself so he could return home. She would also leave Bae alone whilst she was drinking at the tavern. However she was quick to leave with Rumple and Bae when Bae entered the tavern. Were Rumple and Milah trying to mask the bad state of their marriage and play happy families in front of Bae?

Milah also could make my list. Anyone who has spent any time with a baby knows they do not just smile cutely at you, so I don’t necessarily fault her for handing off Bae to go outside. Then again, I think the writers were trying to imply she wasn’t thinking “oh my aching back & head…..Calgon take me away”…so much as “hot pirate take me away, I’m done with this”

May 12, 2013 at 7:14 pm #193384PriceofMagicParticipantI don’t really have a favourite or least favourite mother/child relationship. I don’t think any of the family relationships in the show are depicted as perfect.

Keeper of FelixMay 12, 2013 at 7:23 pm #193386obisgirlParticipantI think it’s difficult to judge Milah as a mom. I mean, when we first met her this season, she was in a tavern, drinking and I don’t know what else but also, we don’t know if she did this often (like every day) and this time one, Rumpel just came home early and caught her.
but then, there’s also abandoning her responsibilities and running away because she was so miserable. for running away from her family, she doesn’t get any bonus points but she could have been great with Bae. I hate to think after Bae was born, she would just totally withdraw from her own son and not even care for him.
May 12, 2013 at 7:33 pm #193388PriceofMagicParticipantI think Milah was at the tavern often enough since Rumple knew exactly where she’d be. He didn’t even need to ask Bae any questions but just told him to get his cloak.
