As many have said here, Mortal!Rumple is something Dearies would love to see. It’s compelling and fascinating to watch the struggles of a sorcerer cope with mortality, family, and even a much younger wife. We find it interesting, but I don’t think Adam, Eddy or the writers view it that way. It doesn’t have SHOCK or BOLD value to it. It’s a human story, who wants that! (Only everyone BUT the writers). And I’ve gotten the feeling they’ve never liked Rumbelle…it’s something they had to pander do, but never liked.
So I could so totally see them pulling the Beauty and the Beast ending/Rumbelle kiss and giving it to another couple. They love their parallels. Plus, I really think Bobby is done after this season. The way they’ve been writing him his death is the only outcome. Will can be in the background to comfort Belle after his death, we have a link to Aladdin through Will/Jafar in Season 5, and CS get their TLK. It all fits together nicely. And while Bobby is a draw, Jafar can bring people back for Season 5.
If it’s not Emma then it will be Hook that stabs Rumple. One of those two is going to briefly be the Dark One but I’d put my money on Emma.

Part of it is simple though: Power corrupts. We’ve seen that repeatedly throughout the show–that’s one of the prices of magic.
We’ve watched it corrupt all the villains, who generally go (at least chronologically) from lovable people to hardcore villains as a result of gaining some power that they believe will allow them to overcome whatever is holding them back from happiness.
But we’ve also seen it with our heroes. Give Snow the power to forget her True Love, she runs off to assassinate Regina. Give Snow the power to kill Cora…she does it. (There’s a bit of self-defense in both cases, but still.) Give Jiminy the power to harm his parents, he tries it–that actually was VERY dark (Geppetto’s parents are STILL in Gold’s shop as creepy puppet people). Give Henry the powers of the Truest Believer in Neverland, he’ll cut lost boys and give his own heart to Pan. Give Neal the power to reverse death…he’ll (OOCly I still believe) do it… Emma went a little dark when she got desperate to beat Regina in S1; Gold offered her the power to beat Sidney in the election, and for a little while, she went with it. And given We Are Both, we know that there’s a Lacey side to Belle that LOVES the dark one’s power as much as the man underneath, and even she couldn’t resist the temptation to use the dagger when she got desperate enough.
Power by itself is very attractive and that’s why anyone would choose to be the Dark One in the first place. (Reminder, you have to be willing to commit murder at least once just to BECOME to DO.) The curse takes away whatever humanity the power trip leaves intact. Because of Bae, though, I think Rumple was able to find a balance for a time–stick to deals, and enforce them on himself as well as those around him. It let him get what he wanted in, mostly, a way he could justify to that shred of humanity in him that was left.
After Zelena, after Neal’s death, and after rediscovering the hat (the greatest temptation for someone willing to undergo the DO curse to get the DO power–the DO power without the curse)…there wasn’t anything but Belle to hold him back, and he believed if he could just manage it without her knowing, she’d still be there for him.
I don’t think he’s suicidal right now, but I do believe we’ll see him shift from full-on villain to something more like the Rumple we know by the end of this arc. And, in the process, if he realizes there’s truly nothing left for him…then he might become same.

And there is no show after S5, at least if we’re looking at ratings and predictions for forthcoming season ratings. S5 is most likely (I’d say about 85% sure here) the end. And even how they are presenting this arc’s story as the ultimate way to fill in a lot of the blanks and really tear apart what it means to be a hero or a villain. A lot of this story this season isn’t just “story of the arc” it’s “story of the show” and is being presented as a big wrap up, or at least the biggest heave ho before they do two smaller arcs in S5 and then bow out. And if A and E and ABC know that, then they don’t have to consider how the loss of RC affects the show and its ratings anymore. They can be a bit devil may care because it’s the end. They can bring in someone new for a short arc (Jafar seems like the biggest option and theory right now) and then end the show after that arc is done.

This exactly. If they’re assured of a series ending Season 5, then they can let go of Bobby. They won’t be a slave to ratings because they’re committed. ABC/Disney has them do Aladdin, something they’ve already touched on in Wonderland and want to do anyway, to coincide with it’s re-release. It’s a multi-platform promotion, and then they have the freedom to end the series how they want for 5b. From a business and ratings standpoint, Robert Carlyle is not required. My view is they bring back Naveen Andrews (who has a big name on tv of his own) and with Lana and the others they won’t have to worry about the void made by Rumple’s demise.
Heck, I even expect if Rumple dies that Bobby may come back intermittently to do flashbacks. Not on a weekly basis, but he could still do his past role part time, he’s still getting air time and drawing viewers and everyone is happy (except viewers).
