    Hi, everyone!

I often go by “Phyrelight” (phonetically, “fire-light”) on many boards on the interwebs, but everyone can call me “Phyre” for short. I grew up in North Carolina, United States, and I have a love for reading, television, film, and psychology.

Since my childhood, I have read a lot of fairy tales, folklore, and mythology. I also love reading on the background history of these stories. For example, the story of “Cinderella” dates as far back as Ancient Egypt, and it even includes a shoe that was brought to the pharaoh by one of the Egyptian bird-gods. It is also very surprising how some of these stories can move from one culture to another. For instance, there are “the suicidal lovers” which is more commonly known as “Romeo and Juliet” (Shakespeare), “Tristian and Isolde” (old Anglo-Saxon origins), and “Pyramus and Thisbē” (Roman origins).

My favorite fairy tale is a little-known story in the US which can be called overall “the story of the lost husband”. In Norway, it is called “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”; and in Ancient Greece, “Cupid and Psyche”. Mercer Mayer has a children’s book on “East of the Sun” with extraordinary illustrations about this tale.

I also love science fiction which I consider to be the modern version of folklore. Some of my favorite scifi shows are “Star Trek”, “Doctor Who”, and “Firefly”. I also love the original three “Star Wars” films, but I’m still mad at George Lucas for making the new trilogy without consulting or employing other writers and directors. It felt like he really rushed to get these movies made to make money. However, he did warm my heart some when he said that he was building low-income housing when his neighbors told him he couldn’t build a studio at Skywalker Ranch. 😉

I have been watching “Once Upon A Time” from the very beginning. I started listening to the podcast and lurking on these forums in the spring of 2012. I finally made a sign-on and started posting a couple weeks ago, and I am happy to be here. 🙂

Welcome, Phyre! I’m looking forward to reading your insights re: fairy tales. That’s very interesting about Cinderella’s Egyptian origins. Have you listened to the most recent podcast where they point out the Pyramus and Thisbe reference on OUaT?
