Did anyone see photos of Henry’s Book?
Isn’t there a about three stories that we haven’t seen yet?
1) The Golden Bird – Story only
2) The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Photos of the flying monkey’s with Dorothy
3) Snow – White and Rose – Red – Story only right before the pages that were torn out of the book[adrotate group="5"]June 7, 2013 at 12:54 pm #197469RumplesGirlKeymasterYes to the first two; we haven’t seen anything about the Golden Bird or the Flying Monkeys which we assume come from Oz. I would count on seeing Oz before the Golden Bird, though. It’s a more famous story and there have already been nods to Oz in S2.
The third one you mention was already dealt with in the friendship of Snow and Ruby. Those two becoming friends is a nod to the Snow White and Rose Red story.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 7, 2013 at 4:49 pm #197473HappyEndingsSpectatorSnow White and Rose Red are two little girls living with their mother, a poor widow, in a small cottage. They are very good little girls; they love each other dearly; and their mother is very fond of them. Rose-Red is outspoken and cheerful and loves to play outside. Snow White is quiet and shy and prefers doing housework and reading.
One winter night, there is a knock at the door. Rose Red opens the door to find a bear. At first, she is terrified, but the bear tells her not to be afraid. “I’m half frozen and I merely want to warm up a little at your place,” he says. They let the bear in, and he lies down in front of the fire. Snow White and Rose Red beat the snow off the bear, and they quickly become quite friendly with him. They play with the bear and roll him around playfully. They let the bear spend the night in front of the fire; and, in the morning, he leaves, trotting out into the woods. The bear comes back every night for the rest of that winter, and the family grows used to him.
When summer comes, the bear tells them that he must go away for a while to guard his treasure from a wicked dwarf. During the summer, when the girls are walking through the forest, they find a dwarf whose beard is stuck in a tree. The girls rescue him by cutting his beard free, but the dwarf is ungrateful and yells at them for cutting his beautiful beard. The girls encounter the dwarf several times that summer, rescue him from some peril each time, and the dwarf is ungrateful each time. Then one day, they meet the dwarf once again; this time, he is terrified because the bear is about to kill him. The dwarf pleads with the bear, begs it to eat the girls instead; but the bear pays no heed and kills the dwarf with one swipe of his paw. Instantly, the bear turns into a prince. The dwarf had put a spell on the prince by stealing his precious stones and turning him into a bear, but the curse is broken with the death of the dwarf. Snow White marries the prince, and Rose Red marries his brother.
How do you figure is is Red Riding Hood and Snow there is no Bear in it or a dwarf, nor a Prince:?:

June 7, 2013 at 4:53 pm #197474RumplesGirlKeymasterThe friendship of Red and Snow is a nod to the story of two girls who are friendly living with an old woman. They took the Red Ridding Hood story and added Snow White, combining both. They don’t have to act out the Rose Red and Snow White Story for it to be in the show, just having Ruby and Snow be BFFs is enough. Besides, that story is far to fantastical to be on OUAT. They’d have to get a character to be the “bear” and they’d have to deal with the Prince.

So it’s either an oversight because that picture is in the pilot when they hadn’t thought out all points of the Onceverse yet or there are flying monkeys in many lands.

The book is actually “Once Upon A Time” and covers stories from FTL. That being said, I’m sure there are lots of things in the book that we as viewers just haven’t seen yet. They weren’t going to show every possible story in Henry’s book in Season 1 and then have us just counting down and crossing them off. Some stories, like has been mentioned, have had little nods to them, but I bet there are sections of the book that haven’t been explored yet.
It’s one of those cases where the characters know what all is in the book because they’ve flipped through it so many times and/or lived it so don’t need to refer to it as much, but we don’t know all of it yet. Henry hasn’t had to carry the book around much except to explain things to new people or to double check and declare that people like Frankenstein aren’t even in the book. We’ve hardly seen it since the curse broke so I don’t think he’s really having to carry it around like he used to when he was on a mission to discover who everyone was.
Oz has had lots of clues both in the book and various storylines / mentions so I bet we’ll see that before too long as it’s one of the most built up stories that we haven’t actually seen. We’ve seen/heard of at least 2 methods of travelling to/from there (slippers + door in the hat) and seen the flying monkeys in the book since the pilot etc etc.
Not all nods to things follow the original stories directly. (IE: in Peter & the Wolf, I don’t recall Peter DATING the wolf and then being killed by her). So things like Snow White & Rose Red are given nods to by showing how close Red & Snow are, whereas other stories get more nods because there’s more things they can do with it and still incorporate it into the story they want to tell.
Why they keep using The Golden Bird as the text for 99% of what we see as text in the book I do not know, nor do I know if we’ll ever really see much relating to it.
I agree that most of what we’ll get in the future doesn’t really require looking at Henry’s book since most people are pretty open about who they are now and he’s not having to do as much research to try and figure out the connections. With so much stuff NOT being in the book, we don’t have as much of a roadmap left to go off of based on what we’ve seen, but it opens up the canvas to other worlds that Henry isn’t familiar with and lets him go on the adventures he wants to instead of being the kid with all the answers. He was confident before because he knew what kinds of things happened and he wanted to be the hero he read about.
We’re basically at the point where Henry’s comment from S2 comes into play – he doesn’t want to just read about the heroes, he wants to be one. Can’t wait to see what happens with Neverland and I hope it’s not just “rescue the kid” but that Henry uses his vast knowledge of fairy tales and finds a way to help himself a little too. Since we haven’t really played much with the typical “damsel in distress” princess types, I want to see Henry put a little of his lessons into good use (we know he reads the book a lot so he has book-smarts, he was learning to swordfight from Charming, we never did see him get to actually ride a horse yet but that won’t help him in NL anyway so that can be saved for the EF etc etc but I’d like to see him come into his own. He doesn’t want to be treated like a little kid so he’s gonna have to step up and do something about it and now would be a good time. I’m looking forward to the group going on an adventure there to rescue him, but I’d love to see Henry be a big part of the mission being successful and/or at least help them find a way to make something happen).
