H&K said Hook wasn’t going to be a evil guy in an interview weeks ago, so he was pretty much exactly what I was expecting 😉
They said he would be a very complex guy, who maybe had to make some difficult choices in some very hard situations- which I took to mean he made some bad choices when faced with some bad situations- which this episode confirmed 😉
I expect we’ll see him darken as he fights for vengeance against Rumple (like EVERY single character who goes after vengeance in Once 🙄 )[adrotate group="5"]October 22, 2012 at 10:36 am #157551SlurpeezParticipantBased on the casting call for Captain Hook, I also expected him to be a polite villain with whom one could sympathize. The writers did a great job of writing an antihero who was dishonorable and yet who possessed a code of chivalry. Colin O’Donoghue wonderfully portrayed a flawed character, who though unethical for stealing another man’s wife, came across as gallant for trying to defend the woman he loved. I think Milha and Killian truly loved each other, too, which is why he tried so hard to protect her against the Dark One. (Though why she couldn’t just be quiet and hand over the bean is beyond stupid on her’s and Killian’s parts).
TheGoldenKey worte: Sometimes the worst villains can be the most charming. That’s what makes them so dangerous.
I totally agree that sometimes charm can be very deceptive, and I expect we’ll see Killian Jones try to avenge Milha’s death by searching for the Dark One’s dagger. Also, there may be more to Killian’s story than we know. He could be related to Davy Jones, which might have set Killian on the path of piracy in the first place.

I really liked him, that may be cause i like pirates and antihero’s and he’s a cool lookin dude, but overall I liked his character in the end, “sparkling dirt?” I like that he’s not a flamboyant 2 demensional “pirate” and that he’s a guy that the crew likes..and that he’s a charmer…thats how I am maybe that’s why I like those characters. 😉

Yeah, I think the exact word they used was “misunderstood” so I was going into this ep with an open mind, eager to see what it was that affected him so much that it set him on that dark path. I’m looking forward to seeing how his character evolves.
My very first impression of him was to want to kick Milah out of her chair in the bar and sit there myself with that fine view across the table. Pour me another, plz, Mr Jones! 😉

But he did love Milla and tried to protect her and he was fair with Smee. So he would seem like a decent guy.
Was I the only one, though, that kind of thought he was trying a little too hard to match Jack Sparrow’s accent? O’Donohue is great and yummy, but there was no chance anyone could pull that off but Depp.

Only in the sense that Jack Sparrow and Killian Jones both spoke with English accents did I think there was much of a commonality. To be fair to Colin O’Donoghue, Johnny Depp is always going to be a hard-act to follow. I think Colin did a great job making Killian his own man though. Despite being Irish, Colin pulled off a very posh English accent. I think Jack Sparrow’s was much more of a “commoner’s” working-class British accent.
In fact, I think at times Rumpel, far more than Killian, sounded a lot like Jack Sparrow. Robert Carlyle said in a recent interview that he always gives Rumpel a slightly different voice. Carlyle said Rumpel has been around for so long, he often imitates accents of people he admires. Since he’s been around for centuries, he sort of lost his own identity and has taken on other’s identities.

I knew Rumple was going to cut off his hand the moment Killian called him a crocodile.
He is a different sort of Hook than I’m used to, but I like him- definitely very attractive! And I like the polite villain aspect- he has not developed into a true villain yet. I suspect we will see how he became one.October 22, 2012 at 5:18 pm #157644faux paxParticipantIf they do bring in peter (which I am praying is not Bae–but that’s a rant for another thread), I hope they get more into why Peter and Hook were such rivals. And now that we know it was Rumple that cut off the hand, it’s going to have to be something good.
Syfy channel had a miniseries called “Neverland” which explored this a bit more. In that show, Hook was kind of a mentor to Peter but when they got to Neverland he hooked up with a female pirate and chose the “grown-up” feeling of lust over the boys who looked up to him. There’s more to it than that, but it’s an interesting take on why peter and Hook hate each other and why Peter is fighting the idea of being a grown up so hard.

He dressed well for a pirate, and seemed to have a strange sense of honor–he offered Rumpelstiltskin a sword for a proper duel, and he spared his life when he coul have killed him, along with being ready and willing to die when Rumpelstiltskin defeated him in the duel.
Overall, I didn’t think he was that bad. He seemed like a sophisticated bully., whos only redeeming quality was the light amount of honor he had, the manners, and the love he had for Milah. 🙂 I think he honestly loved her–he lied to protect her, tried to save her life when Rumpelstiltskin pulled her heart out of her chest, and mourned when she died, as well as swearing vengeance.
I actually thought Rumpelstiltskin was the true evil one in this episode–he made sure that Belle’s posters were not seen, interfering with her intentions of finding her father. I know what Maurice did was wrong, but Belle had a right to see her father if she wished. Also, the way he killed his wife was disturbing–yes what she did was horrible, but he had no right or justification, nor has he shown any true remorse.
Not–sorry that I posted this somewhere by mistake. Really sorry.
