I know everyone is hating on him right now and frankly I get why (partly, I still say a lot of the blame is on Rumple) but this is not the post for that.. (parts of this are from sarah’s tumblr bc she is a lot more eloquent than I at times)
What I got most out of this episode was that Hook wants to die, this is a man who is heartbroken, he lost the woman he loved and all he wants is to be back with her.. The revenge was about killing Rumple, he knew about the dagger and all, when he realized that was close to impossible he wanted to hurt Rumple the way Rumple hurt him.
He purposely lost the fight at the library so that Smee could get the shawl, that encounter already has Rumple pissed at him.
He could have burnt that shawl it would have been the best thing in terms of revenge, he takes the thing Rumple wants the most but he couldn’t do it because Milah made it,
Then there’s the beating with Rumple he just takes it (Killian must be a pretty good fighter I mean he was a pirate captain that takes a lot of guts/skill) but here he takes the beating..and he keeps egging him on he wants Rumple to kill him.
Hook: Kill me like you did Milah, then I’ll finally be reunited with her
He wanted Rumple to kill him on his ship, all he wanted was to be reunited with Milah, he’s a broken man. When Rumple doesn’t kill him, it drives him crazy so he grabs the gun and goes after them..They are at the border and Hook shoots Belle (in a place where he knows it won’t kill her) making her cross the border and forget everything..his revenge is basically complete
Rumple looses Belle just like Killian lost Milah, except for Killian it’s a lot more permanent.
Look at Hook’s smile when Rumple summons the flaming ball of death after Hook shoots Belle? That kills me, because he’s basically thinking, “Yes. Finally.”
Then the car comes and he literally jumps in front of it (look at the gifs if you don’t believe me)
About Belle: (from Sarah’s tumblr)
Hook was testing her. He wanted to see if she was easily seduced, if he could actually win her over from Rumple’s side. She’s always a pawn. I mean of course she’s going to look taken aback, the man is undeniably handsome and just invaded all manner of personal space.
When her love for Rumple passes his test, and he’s bested by her again, he resorts to shooting her. Once again, not to kill her, as he says (“oh, fear not, she’ll live”), but to rip her from Rumple the way Milah was ripped from her. I’ll point out again that killing her is something he could’ve easily justified to himself, since Milah was killed by Rump. Hook could’ve killed Belle plenty of times, but he doesn’t. The only person he wants to die is himself.
So yeah. That wasn’t sexual tension. That was Hook playing with all the cards he had to undermine Rumple, and one of them happens to be his pretty face.
This is not a villain, this is an extremely broken man who has nothing left to live for, but now he can at least try to begin to move on, because he has gotten his revenge. He has moved on from the anger stage of grief to the depression stage of grief..
BTW I do NOT condone Hook shooting Belle/pushing her over the border, it was a very dick move but understandable when seen from his point of view

I don’t care if you hate/loathe Hook, you have to admit Colin’s acting blew it out of the water

I agree. My heart broke for him this episode. If this episode isn’t proof that Hook isn’t a villian then I don’t know what is. When the car hit Hook though, to me it looked like he purposefully jumped in front of it too.
I knew that Hook was a broken man, but I didn’t realise he was so broken that he wanted to die.I noticed too that Hook shot Belle in the shoulder, when he could’ve easily shot her in the head. But I can’t believe that Rumple had the nerve to say to Hook “what you’ve done can’t be undone”.
In the promo when Whale said it would be best if they let him die, I think they were actually talking about Hook. And it will be Emma who tells him to save him (shes the only one in SB who has a connection with him). So he’ll probably be pretty angry that he is still alive.
What I think is really sweet and exciting is that they are going to make Emma repair Hook and give him something to live for and worth fighting for. They fit together perfectly like a puzzle piece. I just didn’t expect for the Emma and Hook romance to start so quickly- we’re in for one hell of a ride! 😀
Colin’s acting was amazing! I think it was his best yet!
January 14, 2013 at 10:24 am #168247PheeParticipantWas just posting in another thread about how he took that beating on the boat because he felt he deserved the pain, like it was a release for all the emotional pain he’s been dealing with since the day he failed to protect Milah.
For all the nasty crap he’s done, I can’t help it, my heart broke into a frillion pieces for the guy in this ep because his grief and anger is so all consuming and personally destructive.

I agree. In the end, both Hook and Rumple paid the price for their hatred and unforgiveness. Surely they can’t just leave it there! For either of them! I had so much trouble sleeping last night. I know this is just a tv show, but it hurt!
January 14, 2013 at 1:53 pm #168257toothfairyParticipantMy heart is breaking for both Captain Hook, and for Belle. Rumplestiltskin is just so evil. I can’t feel sorry for him. I am sad for Rumbelle, but I’m finding it hard to really feel sorry for Rumplestiltskin.
January 14, 2013 at 3:12 pm #168260JosephineParticipantI know I’m going to get hate for this, but I still have no feelings for Hook. No sympathy, no pity, nothing. I just feel nothing for him. I can see that he wanted Gold to kill him to be reunited with Milah, and yeah, he threw the library fight to distract Gold, but just like Regina and Daniel, another controversial thing, I really didn’t feel anything. At least bringing Daniel back from the dead did get me to see that she did love him and I felt a little stirring for feeling that Stable Boy didn’t produce, but after this episode and “The Crocodile” I fear I’ll just never have any feelings for Hook. Weird thing is I don’t even have anger toward him, even though I’m a huge Rumbelle fan.

January 14, 2013 at 3:13 pm #168261the fairestParticipantI’m not terribly symathetic towards Hook either.
January 14, 2013 at 3:41 pm #168263sarah_tnParticipantI don’t find humor, pleasure, or satisfaction in seeing someone in the real world, or on my favorite tv show get hurt. I prefer Hook, but didn’t find pleasure in seeing Rumple hurt (emotionally) either. I don’t hate any of the characters. Life is too short to be that petty. There’s not an innocent party here. Two wrongs don’t make a right. They’re both at fault. Rumple started it, when he got revenge the first time. That happened the first time when he sold his soul, and the second time when he killed Milah. When will he learn that every evil thing he does will bring him more evil? When will Hook finally have someone who instead of a hand of hatred, will show him compassion and understanding? It’s amazing what can grow when the right seeds are sown. Negativity begets negativity. Right now, the show is really, really negative. I don’t see any hope on the horizon here anywhere, for anybody. I’m not okay with the show leaving it that way for Hook, or for Rumple. All that does, is take, take, take. It doesn’t give back anything and is emotionally draining for no good purpose or benefit. I’m feeling drained, and really low right now. 🙁 😥

I have sympathy in that he lost Milah the way he did even though I don’t think that Hook/Milah quite worked instantly like Snow/Charming, Rumple/Belle, and Emma/Neal did for me. I mean I believe that their each other’s true loves especially Milah’s feelings for Hook, but I just wish they showed more in “The Crocodile” why Hook fell in love with Milah. Now after that episode, I think Hook has shown just how deep his love truly ran for her. I just wish they would have done more in “The Crocodile” to show that because while I understand his need for revenge, it just didn’t compare to how they have wrote Rumple’s and Regina’s quests.
For instance, I cheer for Rumple to at least find Bae, but I can’t cheer for Hook to attain his goal. I know that it’s Rumple’s fault for losing Bae in the first place, and Hook didn’t deserve Rumple killing his true love in front of him no less. However, Hook was a bully from the first time that we met him, and while Rumple has turned into something far worse than Hook, we were shown that he was a good man at one time and that part of him does still exist deeply buried within him, but it’s still in there.
I can’t even love to hate Hook like I did with Regina in the first season even though I think that his quest for revenge makes more sense than her quest for revenge over a little girl because the writing for him before the winter hiatus was very inconsisten inconsistent. I love it when they’re not afraid to go all out with him like they have Cora’s character, but at times, it felt like they didn’t know they wanted to go with Hook’s character. Sometimes it felt like they really wanted a Captain Jack Sparrow character, but they were too scared to actually just write in Jack Sparrow to the show. Other times it felt like they really did want to put him in the same league as the other villains when he stole Aurora’s heart or when he backhanded Belle and was about to gut her open. Both options could have worked, but when they tried to do them together, I think it just came out a mess because I found Hook too villainous to like as a charming rogue yet too wacky and trivial to take seriously as a villain. I’m cautiously optimistic because I think that they’re going the latter route now by just having him be villainous yet having a sympathetic side brought out by talking about Milah, which I think should have been the way they went in the first place, instead of trying to please everyone with his character.

This! You can’t say Hook is evil and then praise Rumple just like you can’t praise Hook and then go against Rumple..
They have both done evil things but they are both broken…Hook is a lot more broken because he hasnt let go of Milah and his revenge until now..

Yes! Deep down he’s not a villain he’s just a broken man who has made a lot of wrong decisions.. I know they will find a way for them to get Belle’s memory back so I’m not all worried about that.. I am worried about Killian
Hook has just hit rock bottom and he needed to hit it.. the only way he can go is up
I think Emma is going to play a part in helping him get out of the hole he is in..They are very similar people, kindred souls , and she knows what is like to be broken so I do think she’s going to be the one to help him
Plus they did say he was going to fall with the good crowd which I'm thinking it's the charmings, plus it will allow Killian and Emma to get closer and he is going to one of her suitors this season
