Well, you got my point. The viewers are already frustrated and angry over the losses of Graham and August. The audience wants to be entertained, not exasperated. The core of my point is that I believe that if they don’t keep Captain Hook on Once Upon A Time, it will be a big mistake. I’m not sure it’s one they would recover from and again, it all comes back to a question of objectives, goals, desired results, and most especially, what you’re willing to invest into your purposes in order to achieve those results.
I see. And my point is that it’s not only about Hook advancing the ratings, but the other cast additions as well… 😆
[adrotate group="5"]January 11, 2013 at 2:13 pm #167910oncewatcherParticipantWriters, producers, etc. need to spend a regular amount of time searching social media to “spy” on what the viewers are saying. They’re tired of the rotating door (again, comes back to the question of objectives, versus desired results).
I honestly don’t recall hearing about any other cast member raising your ratings. In fact, quite the contrary.
January 11, 2013 at 2:26 pm #167911PriceofMagicParticipantI think getting rid of Hook wouldn’t hurt the story of once. It is the story that is important. Whilst audience figures may help networks decide whether or not to renew a show for another season, it is the story that helps pull the audience in and compels them to watch the show. If the story is rubbish the audience isn’t going to watch.
The one thing we’ve got to consider, in terms of story, is that neither Rumple or Hook as characters are going to be happy coexisting in Storybrooke. We know Rumple leaves Storybrooke to find Bae which mean that Hook and Rumple aren’t going to be butting heads for an episode or two. Hook’s entire story arc this season is about revenge against Rumple, once that’s taken away what is Hook going to do? It’s better he goes out with a bang than a whimper.
Also I think a lot of Hook fan would be okay with Hook’s departure if it was done in a satisfying way. If Hook were to sacrifice himself for Emma, the CaptainSwan fans would be sad that he went but happy that he went in such style. He could be banished to another realm so it is possible for him to return as and when the story requires him.
To keep him around with nothing to do just for the sake of keeping him around is not the right way to go in my opinion. Not forgetting Hook is a pirate. He never stays in one place too long without a purpose. For him to just hang about Storybrooke with nothing to do would be out of character.
All magic comes with a price!

Well, I can clearly not see why you’d assume that other casting member’s or casting additions weren’t raising the viewer numerary. And also why you’d denote that Hook is displacing them by far, because that’s obviously not the case.
It’s self-evident that he might have conducive a great amount of viewers and I’m really grateful for that only inured to the benefit of the show, but he is NOT the only one who does! Sigh.January 11, 2013 at 2:33 pm #167914oncewatcherParticipantI don’t think he’d be kept around, just to be kept around. His story has depth, and is like a lego block. It’s got all kinds of stuff on it for them to keep building onto it with.
What it comes down to, is the writers need to stop hesitating to take they have, and run with it.I was looking for an article, and I found it. It’s about ratings, and Hook if anybody’s interested.

As for hurting the story, look at this:

@Oncewatcher I know plenty of people who were going to stop watching til hook came in. And they will stop watching if he’s gone.View conversation Hide conversation Reply RetweetedRetweet

I honestly don’t recall hearing about any other cast member raising your ratings. In fact, quite the contrary. Can I just add that even simple check on social networks show that Hook is definitely not the only one adored on the show.
On tweeter Colin has about 20k followers whereas Lana Parrilla has 90k and Ginny Goodwin has more than 200k. Similar for facebook.
So even if Hook is eliminated, there will still be plenty of audience left to watch the show.Statements like “I know many people who were going to stop watching it until Hook appeared” make me chuckle. Because how many of those people do you know in person? And how many of them were actually serious about it? We know human nature, more often than not, they would keep watching, waiting for something to happen, even if they weren’t entirely happy with it. Also, I don’t believe it, season 1 was full of action and the first episodes were just starting to develop the story – no room for getting bored.
I have nothing to Hook himself, maybe except for some of his lines, but honestly, what made me dislike the character was the fans themselves – claiming how he’s the best and the show would be nothing without him. He is a good actor and his role IS interesting. But that can be said about many other characters – personally I don’t think he will ever be as good as Lana but I’m not stating that SHE runs the show.
January 11, 2013 at 6:31 pm #167968oncewatcherParticipantHere’s another one:
Fugued_Out: @aikaterinik @oncewatcher1 @colinodonoghue1 OMG NOOOOO I am SO not watching if Hook is gone, I started watching cuz of HOOK !
I could spend all day on this, but I can’t. Point is, interest in Hook is not defined by posters on this board. It’s defined by results, and by random, unprejudiced chatter (like in social media).
Don’t blame me for the topic that resulted in that poster’s comment. I didn’t start it.

If they get rid of him (surely, they can’t be that dumb), it’s really going to kind of kill it for me. What reason will I have to hang around here, if I can’t look forward to, and talk about my favorite character? I think there are some people here who must be in the business (that’s what I get from their comments), and they’ve been spending so much time with eachother, than they can’t value or understand the feelings of others outside their own little circle. If Hook’s gone, I’m done. You can bet money on that one.
January 11, 2013 at 7:02 pm #167972evilqueenParticipantYou are so biased it hurts. We’re not asking you to prove if Hook has some really devoted fans. I’m sure he has. AS DO MANY OTHER CHARACTERS ON THIS SHOW. I’ll bring you millions tweets like that too, if you don’t believe me.
But you stated that Hook MAKES the show and without him it is just mediocre. Which is so blatantly NOT true and it’s offensive. If it was so ‘mediocre’ as you say, would you have watched season one at all? It didn’t even have a glimpse of Colin?
You love him, I get it, but do look outside your little box and notice that there are many other great characters without which the show would seriously suffer in the rating reviews. Probably even more so than without Hook.So please enough of this, we have all acknowledged people’s admiration of Hook, now you (collective ‘you’) should acknowledge that there are others who love other characters, stop claiming that he’s the one and only and stop creating those numerous pointless threads.
