Hook’s Girl
ParticipantLooks like there is confusion timeline wise among the fandom when it comes to the Hook & Tink flashback scene in 3×11. How some of the dialogue was confusing. I’ve been thinking about this scene quite a bit since it aired. I tend to study Hook. I try to look at things through his eyes. So if you don’t like him, this isn’t a thread to bash his character. It’s just my observations. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. So here is my take on how the flashback fits in. Enjoy.
Hook has been in NL a very long time before meeting Tink. He may have heard about the dagger from Bae but did he totally believe in it’s power to kill the Dark One. Remember at this point Hook has lost all hope, faith, & belief that anything good could happen to him now. He’s lost his happy ending and he lost creating a new family with Bae, no future. He’s totally engulfed in his grief and revenge for Milah. He is stuck in NL, might be working for Pan and maybe has lost half his crew at this point based on Smee’s comments about the island gives him the creeps and it being safer on the JR.
Notice that Hook is holding a lantern. NL might already be dark at this point so it had to have been a while after Bae left him. We don’t know how long Bae stayed on the JR. It could be longer then only a few weeks that we originally thought. I would think learning to read the stars, creating maps, and learning the ways of a pirate can take a while. Also, time works differently in NL.
Hook’s mental state couldn’t have been great. He probably did a lot thinking & drinking and just did Pan’s bidding to past the time or to save himself & the remainder of his crew from further harm. He focused on surviving to see his revenge through. When he finally “woke up”, I think that Hook may have seeked out confirmation that the dagger really can kill Rumple and possibly how to find it’s whereabouts. He’s like Emma where he needs proof vs going on belief, like in 3×6, where Hook thought it was a good idea to confirm that Neal was really alive before telling Emma.
That proof may have come from Pan or the Lost Boys which gave him a renewed determination to find a way out of NL, maybe by over hearing a conversation, eavesdropping.
Hook knew that Tink was a fairy at this point. He’s good at reading people. He apparently also has prior knowledge on fairies so probably knew how to spot one, even a fallen one. He also probably knew about fairies having pixie dust.
Now as far as Tink not having any magic at this point. She may not have had magic at the time when she met Hook but that doesn’t mean she didn’t know where to find some later on. Pixie dust came from NL and Tink being a fairy probably knew that it comes from flowers in trees that bloom at night, which may have been going extinct at this point.
After Hook & Tink met, they may have gone on journey to seek out pixie dust to help Hook get off the island and they found it. Problem was either there wasn’t enough left to set flight the JR or neither one could make the dust work, both losing belief in themselves, especially Tink. After the pixie dust didn’t work, is when Hook then devised a plan to make a deal with Pan to get off the island. A deal that Pan wouldn’t be inclined to do again.
Tink used poppy knock out dust on Regina to knock her out in 3×3. Pixie dusk is green. Maybe Hook was wishful thinking that Tink regained belief in herself and that the pixie dust she may still have would work. Apparently though she didn’t have anymore pixie dust, maybe gave it to Pan, or didn’t know where to get anymore, it becoming extinct on the island, by the time the JR5 met up with her.
After rewatching 3×3, 3×10 & 3×11, I think Tink & Hook just became friends, drinking buddies, nothing more. They may have been attracted to one another, some flirting going on. After all Tink may have been the only adult female in NL at that time, and Hook may have been the first adult male she’s encountered in NL. He is an attractive guy after all. I bet Hook tried to kiss Tink at least once or twice to try to distract himself from all the pain he felt, but Tink turned him down like she did in 3×10. She wanted to keep her dignity and she knew of Hook’s lost love and his goal. Hook’s bashfulness when re-meeting Tink in 3×3 and Tink’s reactions to Hook in 3×3 & 3×10 lead me to believe this.
I can’t wait to see more of Hook & Tink’s friendship. They do have great chemistry. It will be interesting to see how they interacted during the year long gap after going back to EF.
