Okay, so Rumple stole the curse from the cave (4×12)
This episode, Maleficent said Regina stole it from her, which refers to (The Thing You Love the Most 1×02).
At some point, Rumple lost it. Maybe it’s possible Regina stole it, but then the conversation between her and Mal in 1×02, Regina traded it to Mal for the sleeping curse and that’s when Regina stole it back from her.
I think we should have a game or something, who has the dark curse this week?
[adrotate group="5"]March 12, 2015 at 8:52 pm #298397KebParticipantI think Rumple gave it to Regina; Regina decided she could get her revenge better with the sleeping curse and traded it to Mal. So Rumple had to give her a little push to get her to go get the curse back.
Also on the did he create it question–I think it may already have existed when he first asked Blue how to get to Bae. She knew a curse could do it, and maybe this specific one was what she had in mind when he caught her.

It’s probably some of the oldest magic there is. Way back in the day, Sneaky Fairy probably thought, “If this place gets outta hand, I might need a reset button,” and she stuck the Dark Curse in Bald Mountain and sent her lapdog Chernabog (she calls him her Wittle Cherny Werny) to guard it so that no one except herself could ever enact it.
Or something. 😛

-Rump gets curse.
-Rump gives curse to Regina.
-Regina trades curse to Maleficent.

I think that’s what it is.
Now, I’m wondering why didn’t Regina just use the curse to begin with?

Maleficent knows how dark the curse is and took it from regina so that it could never be used. So I figured Maleficent talked her out of it and traded her the sleeping curse, making Regina think it’d probably be both easier and ever-lasting perhaps (since apparently Regina didn’t count on TLK waking Snow?). Which is appropriate as timeline wise, Aurora was still under her sleeping curse at the time so I could see why Regina would think it wouldn’t be a problem for her.

I think because she still wanted to kill Snow, rather than just torturing her. Once Snow put that protection on herself that prevented Regina from physically harming her “in this land”, the curse became a viable option.
