ParticipantWait, what? How is Belle darker? Between the two of them, Rumple’s heart has to be pitch black compared to Belle’s, who I expect to be bright red. Plus, you know, she told the truth about everything she did in Family Business. Rumple’s been lying to everyone and he’s done far worse than Belle this season.
I didn’t claim Belle was darker than Rumple. What I meant was that Belle is darker than her previous self. Belle from S1 never would’ve sliced Rumple’s neck with a dagger or sought to control him with it. In that way, Belle is experiencing darker moments in her own character than we’ve seen from her previously. Of course, she immediately expressed remorse and regret and confessed, something Rumple has yet to do about his duplicity. Of the two, Rumple’s behavior is clearly way worse. As I wrote, this is the darkest version of Rumple I’ve seen since he first lost Bae and murdered Milha.

ParticipantBelle’s been through a LOT since S1. The Belle we saw in Skin Deep, even counting her loss of her mother and disastrous adventure with Anna, hasn’t been through nearly what our current Belle has been. Since then she’s:
–Fallen for the Dark One (we did see that, but her father suggested it’s had a negative influence on her in S2–is that true? Maybe!)
–Gone Robin Hood hunting (witnessing the darkest of the dark one and still seeing good in him…)
–Been cast out by her true love (also S1)
–Went on an adventure with Mulan
–Been held captive by the Evil Queen (and nearly killed by Hook) for about 3 years
–Spent almost 29 years in a bleak asylum with no real memories at all, at least 6 months of which time was actually moving for her
–Realized that Rumple would twist words to keep the truth from her
–Been kidnapped and nearly mind-wiped by her own father
–Been handcuffed in her own library when she was just trying to help
–Been shot by Hook and lost her memories and wound up locked in the hospital for at least a week
–Transformed into Lacey and endorsed lots of Dark Dark Dark Dark One action
–Said goodbye to her true love when he was suicidal and convinced he’d never come back to her
–Watched her true love actually die
–Watched her true love’s son, whom she had befriended, die to save him
–Seen her true love nearly kill her and be in the clutches of an evil witch while she was powerless to help him
–Gotten married to Rumple & reconciled with her father (good things, yay)
–Been given what she’s been told is a dagger that gives her a heck of a lot of power when she needs it…just having that THERE is a hard temptation not to give in to. And she’s human. She did.
–Been under the spell of the mirror which was like a magical version of the most horrible kind of depression. And when she lashed out at Rumple she was still under that spell. She was under attack by her own thoughts and fears, and her mind and body interpreted him as another attack. Of course she lashed out.
The darkest thing she actually did wasn’t striking him–that was pretty dark but it was under influence of the mirror’s magic. The darkest thing was giving in to the temptation to use the dagger when he wouldn’t help of his own free will.
And I think that parallels with his giving into temptation with the hat…and with Emma’s desire to lose her magic.

This may sound strange, but I actually enjoyed seeing a slightly darker version of Belle and seeing her inner doubts. Her soliloquy in the mirror was excellently done and revealed how complex Belle as a character is. It actually humanized her some, since she always came across as having perfect morality. Seeing she has the same inner struggles as a lot of the other characters was actually a nice change. Seeing her use the dagger on Rumple was I think her darkest moment to date. As a consequence of being in a relationship with Rumple, Belle has been targeted and controlled by others such as her own father, Regina and Hook. So I can understand how all of those negative things like being controlled would make her want to control someone else for a change. Even though she loves Rumple, I think that living with the dark one is giving her serious temptation when it comes to seeking to control him. Belle isn’t above doing something which we’ve previously only seen villains like the duke, Cora and Zelena do.

ParticipantOh, I agree–it was painful in a way because I identified so much with it–but seeing Belle go through that mirror scene and the fallout with Rumple was one of the most powerful moments on the whole series for me.

ParticipantSo today I was ruminating (more…I confess, something about a hiatus right after zero Belle apparently does this to me) on what Rumple will do at this point if Belle tries to leave him.
My first instinct is that he will let her go, as we’ve seen him do before when he either felt she was better off without him or she indicated she WANTED to leave him. (112, 201, 204, 212, 219). It’s happened enough and between his own self-loathing and love for her, that such an action would make sense.
Yet there are a few other reactions that he might have that also have grounding in his history and could be interesting.
One, he could attempt to reform and be that better man she believes he can be. He did try that in Lacey, the Outsider, and The Crocodile (with varying results). And while he made an exception for Zelena, I do believe until he found that hat he had every intention of following through with his vows to Belle and Bae of being a better man at the end of S3/start of S4. It could be the kick he needs to reform, and she might decide not to leave if she had any reason to believe he was working towards it.
Two, he might spiral into something even darker than we’ve ever seen without her to hold him back. That could get scary, especially with a lot of people already feeling he’s crossed the final line with the hat.
Three, he might attempt to force her to stay with him somehow. I don’t believe he’d do that if there wasn’t some other thing involved, but if he thought being with him was protecting her, he’d probably do it.

KeymasterSo today I was ruminating (more…I confess, something about a hiatus right after zero Belle apparently does this to me) on what Rumple will do at this point if Belle tries to leave him.
Honestly? I think he’ll let her go because it confirms what he always knew: Belle would “abandon” him and from there, given this show and what it’s doing, he’ll go full on crazy villain

Yep, exactly. He’s always believed Belle would leave him so he’ll take the separation, caused by his own actions, as something that had been inevitable from the beginning. So she ends up leaving him, not because she doesn’t love him, like he believes deep down, but because of his own actions and lies. Which will give him license to go Evil Villain at full-throttle.
I’ll be honest, I hate the direction they’re taking Rumple. I think it’s the lazy way to write him. It’s easy to rely on Bobby’s ability to act insane, but it’s still lazy. I’ve said repeatedly, having Rumple shedding his curse would be so ripe with possibilities but it takes talented writers who are interested into telling a human story of struggle. Something they’re not interested in doing.
