I know I’ve already asked this question during another conversation, but it’s been bugging me for awhile. Ever since Lorem Ipsum started the conversation about Emma’s favor to Mr. Gold, and the conversation turned towards August holding the dagger in the promos for The Return, I’ve been asking myself:
If Emma knew who Mr. Gold really was, would she still want his help?
There are a couple of things that could influence her judgement on this:
1) Henry’s Book
We’re still not sure of what the book says about him, or if he’s in there. There’s that one illustration of a torch we saw in the pilot episode that led to the part when Snow and Charming are going to the mines to ask Rumple for help. Beyond that, there’s no real indication that he’s mentioned in there. There’s also the fact that some information is missing from the book, like how Henry said that Hansel and Gretel’s father abandoned them when we all know that the Evil Queen had taken him as a prisoner.2) Her Own Experiences With Mr. Gold
Mr. Gold has never exactly given Emma a warm fuzzy feeling. During the time she’s been in Storybrooke, she has seen him:a) Make a deal with a young pregnant woman for her firstborn child and not really seem to be bothered with it
b) Set fire to the Mayor’s Office and pretend to be embarrassed when she exposes him during her election for Sheriff
c) Beat a man to a pulp with his cane for breaking into his house and stealing from him
But there are some nice things that he’s done for her as well:
a) He gave her some walkies so she could play with Henry
b) He gave her Grahams old jacket knowing she would want it
c) He helped her win the election for Sheriff
d) He stood in as Mary Margaret’s attorney and did it free of charge
3) Jefferson
He has made it perfectly clear that he knows who he is, and remembers his life back in FTL. He will have no doubt heard of Rumple and his shenanigans and be more than happy to fill her in on what he’s done in FTL. Granted he’s disappeared since Hat Trick, but he’ll probably show up again later in the series.4) August
He’s already said to Henry in Heart of Darkness that he’s in Storybrooke to help Emma believe in the curse, so he also knows what’s going on. In the promos for the next episode, he’s shown pointing the dagger with Rumple’s name on it directly at Rumple/Gold. He seems to know what that dagger is for, who it belongs to, and who Mr. Gold really is.So tell me guys, if Emma knew who Mr. Gold really was, do you think she would still want his help?

I mean, even Henry doesn’t know and he keeps pretty detailed sketches about who each person might be. I am thinking now that Rumpel is not in the book, or if he is, only in writing. Like there’s no illustrations of him whatsoever. That would be funny since most pictures we have seen so far, we can pretty much tell who they are in Storybrooke. 😆

April 6, 2012 at 9:34 pm #141156enchantedoneParticipantI think Emma is a smart girl. She would know that he was the most powerful person she could go to when she wants to defeat Regina. I think she would be smart enough to use him and his powers to her advantage.

She’s pretty much already said as much when he asked if she was willing to do whatever needed to be done. It’s just that she doesn’t realise the full extent of what she’s agreed to.
Would she want to back out of the association with him if she finds out exactly who he is and exactly what he’s done? Hmmmmm…
Whenever that happens, she’ll no longer be in denial about all this fairytale stuff. If she knows and believes that Mr Gold is Rumple, she’ll also know and believe that Regina isn’t just Mayor Mills, she’s also the Evil Queen. So Emma may have to conceed that like it or not, she’ll still need Mr Gold, because he knows far more about Regina, her history, her powers, and how to bring her down, than Emma will ever know herself. She’d be at a severe disadvantage if she didn’t keep him on side.
Also, once she’s aware of what he’s really capable of, she probably wouldn’t want to make an enemy of him. Would she want to be fighting against BOTH Rumple at the Evil Queen? I wouldn’t want to if I were here.
I’m quite sure she wouldn’t appove of what he’s done in his other life, but she may sympathise if she learns the entire story, including that he only got his powers in the first place because he was trying to protect his son. That’s something she’d be able to relate to, especially if she’s discovered that Henry’s adoptive mother is in fact the Evil Queen. Emma would want any power she could get that would protect Henry, the same way Rumple wanted power to protect Bae, so maybe she’d have some level of understanding with him on that.

So I don’t think Emma would use Gold and his magic because of how the many dangerous consequences it holds. But then agian, if she discoverd he helped snow and charming by telling them about the curse in order to save her, maybe there would be a sort of connection of trust. I don’t know! Tough question!
April 12, 2012 at 5:14 pm #141903dorothyParticipantI just saw an incredibly spoilery promo for the rest of this season on two other blogs where Emma threatens Regina saying, “You took away our happiness and now it's our turn to take away yours.” There's also a crowd of people standing behind Emma who might remember who they are glaring at Regina! Do you think that might be the time Rumple/Mr. Gold choses to reveal himself? 😯
