I always that that Rumpel’s reaction in the pilot when he squinched up his eyes and was thinking was because he hated that he had to give 28 years to the curse before the final battle could begin and not that he was seeing at that moment. I still think that Gold didn’t remember until he heard Emma’s name in Granny’s diner in the pilot so he couldn’t be doing anything like figuring out things or trying to turn events before that. Maybe Emma’s magic somehow made her chose to send Henry to Maine. Maybe there is some other reason or some other person that got him there. It probably is just Gold, but there could be another explanation.

Did we find out that Emma has magic? I know Mr. Gold said she was more powerful than she realized but I didn’t take that as magic. Since Emma gave birth to Henry when she was a juvenile and in jail, I didn’t assume that she personally made an adoption plan so she couldn’t have sent Henry anywhere. I thought they made it pretty clear that Mr. Gold arranged for Regina to adopt Henry. I suppose it could have been a really big coincidence.
From “The Thing You Love Most” —-
Regina: I’m not in the business of making deals with you anymore.
Mr. Gold: To which deal are you referring?
Regina: You know what deal.
Mr. Gold: Oh, right. Yeah. The boy I procured for you. Henry. Did I ever tell you what a lovely name that was? However did you pick it?
Regina: Did you want her to come to town? You wanted all this to happen, didn’t you? Your finding Henry wasn’t an accident, was it?
Mr. Gold: Whatever do you mean?
Regina: Where did you get him? Do you know something?

And i don’t think Gold getting Henry for Regina was just a coincidence. I think there is more to it then that. I think we need more information at this point.

I believe Rumpel can see something of the future. I re-watched the pilot again the other night with my husband who is starting to watch because I talk about the show so much. In the cave when Snow and Charming visited him he seemed to have to work hard to see the future — he squished his eyes and screwed up his face in an effort to see that it would be on her 28th that she would save them. He didn’t know that by normal means. Snow wanted to go to him because she believed he could see the future, she says so. So, I would say he sees some things. I don’t know if he can see everything. Maybe just enough to manipulate, or maybe what he tries to see. If he doesn’t try, he doesn’t know.
And I do remember Rumpel/ Mr. Gold saying something about emotions “blinding” people from seeing clearly. I think I have seen that more than once, like someone else said it… maybe Sydney
You mean when Snow and Charming visited him while he was still in prison? No, I think that was an ‘act’ — a performance like when he visited Shepherd James on his mother’s farm. I think, because Rumple made the curse, he wrote it in somehow that Charming & Snow’s child when she turns 28 will come back and save them all. Making it more of a condition of breaking the curse, than actually seeing the future.
Plus, Snow believed that he could see the future. that’s different than him actually knowing the future. it’ll be interesting to see how the writers differentiate myth from fiction when it comes to what Rumpelstiltskin can and cannot do in the series.

One thing that seems very much like future-seeing, and not just knowing how a magic arrow works or predicting human behavior, is knowing Emma would come to Storybrooke on her 28th birthday. Even if he planted the book and maybe somehow subtly suggested to MM that she give it to Henry, and even if he was observing Henry and knew he was piecing together that nobody else in town was getting any older or changing—predicting that Henry would make his way to Boston and find Emma on her 28th birthday and that they would return to SB on that very same day, was an awfully accurate stab in the dark. I agree that Rumple does not see everything about the future, but this one is hard to explain away.
Do we know how Henry got his bus ticket to Boston? I just went back for a quick look of the scene where Emma gets into his email and they find out he’s been on the mommy finding website and that he stole Mary’s cc, but I didn’t see anything about a bus ticket there. Perhaps Mr Gold bought the ticket and got it to him somehow without Henry knowing. The kid was starting to put stuff together from reading the book and he’d found his birth mother’s info online, and then this bus ticket dated on her birthday magically turns up. Of course he’s gonna go catch that bus, and chances are Emma’s gonna bring him back home immediately.
Of course, if it turns out they did address Henry buying the bus ticket himself at some point, we’ll just disregard this post. LOL
March 27, 2012 at 4:02 pm #139974SnickerdoodleParticipantHe used the credit card to take a taxi to Emma’s so I just assumed he used it to buy his bus ticket as well.
March 27, 2012 at 6:25 pm #139984hjbauParticipantI don’t think they were looking at the list of things charged to Mary’s credit card, but were instead looking at the receipt for just the purchase of the find your parent website.
March 27, 2012 at 7:36 pm #140024PheeParticipantNo confirmation email for the purchase of a bus ticket.
March 27, 2012 at 8:12 pm #140032hjbauParticipantHe probably just bought the ticket at the bus station just like he used Mary’s credit card in the cab.
March 28, 2012 at 10:11 am #140137PheeParticipantPossibly, but if he had to look up bus timetables online, chances are he’d have bought a ticket at the same time and there’d be evidence of it.
Seems more likely to me that he just found a ticket that Mr Gold had planted, took it as a sign that he had a part to play, and went about figuring out how to get to the bus stop. If he lives in a town that no buses pass through and no one ever leaves, how was he to assume that it was his job to leave town and go somewhere else to get Emma? It’s not like the book said, “On her 28th birthday, Emma’s son will go find her to bring her back to break the curse.” He probably would have just assumed that it was destined to be, so she’d show up of her own accord. But if the bus ticket showed up, he’d have known it was his job to go get her.
PS. Gotta love that the convoluted answer is the one that seems more realistic to me, rather than the straightforward option. This show is good times. 😉
