This is how I feel as well. My main ships tend to be canon. It saves me from an awful lot of heart ache in the future. ๐

I’m not one to have dramatic Shippings of people in shows. Reason being is that I always try to predict what will happen next and unless I think of every possiblity even the ones which are not my favorite, I may not be able to come up with a more accurate idea of what I believe will happen next.
Speculation is half the fun with this show! ๐ Two ships I’m currently intrigued by…Hook/Ariel and Mulan/Lancelot…and there’s no indication that either would ever happen, but my mind ran away with speculation and I decided they’d be great pairings. Doesn’t mean I’ll be offended and quit watching if it turns out that Hook isn’t Eric and Ariel wasn’t one of the Neverland mermaids, it’s just fun to come up with potential ideas, even if 90% of my ideas end up being wrong. The stuff K&H come up with is at least as good, if not occasionally better than what I come up with in my own head. ๐

You have to remember, too, that Eddie, Adam and the other writers are telling their version of the story. Not mine or the fans. There are so many differing opinions that I really feel they can’t appease different fan groups. They have to go with what they want to write.
Very much agree with that. Furthermore: As I see it, it is their work, they are the ones putting in many hours of work for this show and not us. Yes, they get paid for it, but that doesn’t make them slaves to our wishes. We don’t depend on watching the show, but they depend on their work. So whatever they do, whatever stories they write, I am sure they never do it without regards and respect to what fans and critics are saying about their work. But if they follow all voices they only can mess up, they have to make choices – and these choices will please some people and some not. Talking about ethics here? Alright, then we should show some respect for those putting in much hard work to create the stories we merely consume (and I think there are different reasons why people enjoy fiction, here in the form of a TV series, distraction is just one of them).
YES and YES! They’d have had an overall plot for the entire show since day 1, and they started developing the idea of this show before they even worked on Lost, so they’ve had it in mind for a long time, which means I’m confident that whatever route they take, it’s been very well considered, and it’ll serve their overall story as they see fit.
They can tweak stuff along the way, depending on fan reaction to certain characters, but I doubt they’d let fan opinion completely alter the story they had planned for any given character, and nor should they. Fans loved Graham, but from the beginning they’d written him knowing he was gonna fulfil a purpose and part of that purpose was for him to die. If they’d decided to go with how much the fans loved him, and kept him around instead, then we wouldn’t have been introduced to the phenomenon of heart crushing, (and heart taking and manipulation has become a vital theme on the show now), wouldn’t have seen that Regina brought over FTL keepsakes and was still able to wield some magic in SB with them, (which had to be established to set up her trying to get the hat to work with Jefferson), wouldn’t have seen the affect that Emma had on Graham’s memory, which proved she was a vital part of everyone getting their memories back. Did I wanna throw stuff at the screen and slap K&H upside the head when they killed Graham? Hell yes! But I can see that it was something they had to do for their story, so I can accept it.
So whatever couples they may or may not put together in the future, even if it’s something that doesn’t really work for me, I’ll still give anything a chance, because I trust that they know what they’re doing to tell their story effectively.

I personally feel that instead of messing with OUaT the fans should write their own stories… that would be of greater interest to me then writing about characters someone else invented. I personally find the story that is evolving on OUaT to my liking and do not need the match up that occur on the side.
It’s not messing with the show as long as people who indulge in fanfic appreciate it for what it is, and don’t confuse it with canon. If people want to use these characters as inspiration for a creative outlet of their own, then more power to them. Maybe some fanfic writers do write their own stories, maybe some are the great novelists or screenwriters of the future, and writing stories about their fave characters on a TV show is how they’re practising and honing their writing skills. Or maybe they’re just fans who get excited by characters they love and they write their own ideas down for the fun of it. Fanfic doesn’t hurt the show at all.

This completely. Especially when it actually concerns canon. Though I personally do think there is a bit of a difference between fantasizing between two possible characters for a bit of fun and fluff (say for instance well written fanfiction if explained nicely and characterized well). However to have extend to the point where every moment is scrutinized in canon is where I draw the line. (Again I feel as if there is a difference between enjoying good nature flirtation say between Emma and Hook but not actually trying to create something that has not been written or actually seen is what I feel as if is too much).
December 29, 2012 at 1:58 am #166528hellraiser-89ParticipantI wont stop watching if the couple I ship doesn’t happen. Mostly because it’s so unlikely (on the show, but not in my mind!) but that’s what fanfiction is for.
December 29, 2012 at 4:15 pm #166547AllThatGlittersParticipantI won’t stop watching if my ship doesn’t sail. They have teased it but I’m aware that it may not happen. It’s fun to think that it is a possibility. I just hope they feature some couple that is making it work on the show. If my ship doesn’t happen, then at least let Snow and Charming be a couple (not always torn apart). Sometimes it is nice to see some happiness through relationships (either through couples, mother/son love, best friends etc).
I guess for me the way I would lose interest is if they stop focusing on the main characters and clutter the story-lines with too many minor characters. For instance, I want to see more Emma episodes. I’m sorry, but Tallahassee was the first time we got an Emma-centric episode in awhile. I want to see the main characters get the central story-lines, people like Snow, Charming, Rumpel, Regina, Henry. I am okay with them giving strong story-lines for Belle or Hook, but if they start showcasing full episodes dedicated to minor characters, I’d start losing interest. The great thing about this show is that they have a character that everyone can either relate to or like. I just don’t want the writers to bite off more than they can chew and suddenly we get no character development for the main characters.

December 29, 2012 at 11:00 pm #166556elleParticipantThat is what worries me–I really do like most of the characters (maybe a couple I would leave out). The problem is that almost every episode introduces a new character that will play some role in the story. Sometimes they are killed off quickly and sort of forgotten (Ruby’s episode was full of that) but sometimes they do keep showing up. It is why I’m not too much against a few characters getting killed off–it would serve as drama and shock, and it would help put focus on the core characters.
I agree–I really want another Emma episode. I thought that Tallahassee was one of the best episodes so far–it is my favorite one so far. ๐
December 30, 2012 at 4:47 am #166572a chipped cupParticipantNo, I wouldnโt stop watching the show if my ship didnโt sail. But then again, most of my favorite couples are already established canon on the show, so I donโt have much to worry about in that arena.
September 30, 2013 at 11:03 pm #213184JosephineParticipantI thought it would be interesting to revisit this thread considering the climate of shippers right now. Remember, no ship names. This isn’t a thread to convince me to jump ship and join yours. Just state your opinions.
I haven’t changed mine. I won’t quit if my ships don’t sail. I trust Eddy and Adam to tell a good story and if that involves the way I want the story to go all the better. But if they have a different vision at least there is the ride to look forward to.

September 30, 2013 at 11:11 pm #213185RumplesGirlKeymasterIt’s interesting to read this almost a year later and now entering a new season. Does everyone still feel the same? Or have you become more “die-hard” in your shipping approach and now play Dido’s “White Flag” when your ship is mentioned? The ONCE fandom climate is slightly toxic at the moment and maybe 95% of it is over shipping. So now I wanna know, if your ship doesn’t sail, are you done with ONCE? (reiterates Jo’s “no name” policy)
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 30, 2013 at 11:16 pm #213186PheeParticipantI started watching this show before I shipped anyone, and as long as the story remains well written, I’ll keep watching it. A ship doesn’t make a show. If a ship is the only reason that a person is watching a show, they’re missing out on all the other excellent characters and storylines that are going on.
