We have the story of amnesiac Belle, nearly forgotten as well kinda amnesiac Sneezy, the story of Greg the stranger, of Cora on a power conquering trip, Regina’s fight for Henry, Hook’s revenge, Rumple’s search for his son, Emma finding her new identity + figuring out (her) magic + getting used to have parents + being a parent herself besides being the one to save Storybrooke, the world and everybody. We have Snow and David having to deal with for a change not being separated for a while. There is the fight between the “evil” team and the “good” team lurking (good and evil can be so ambiguous, especially in this show). There was the Story of Dr. Whale (but guess won’t hear much about him anymore for the rest of the season), Ruby and her grandma are still involved (but somehow now doubt, we get to hear more about them this season). Without closure the stories of Phillip, Mulan and Aurora. Oh, and then there is the still unanswered question of what happened to August. And what about the fairies? And now we have Anton and the possibility of growing magic beans in Storybrooke, which eventually Cora will try to steal. Not to forget what spoilers are telling us or we are hoping for, the whole happy family reunion, or not so happy one, Snow White's mother, young Cora.
Feeling like sitting in an overspeeding carousel. 🙄
When you see it typed out I completely agree. I think what is getting me is that we all of these stories but we are basically going to miss what would be the journey of some characters. Like Aurora and Mulan I think they could have made an interesting storyline but since they are no longer attached to Emma then we might not get to see them until there is a connection again.
But I do agree that there is so much there and it definitely feels a bit overwhelming at times. I guess that those who are “secondary” only have their stories told when it involves the main characters somehow (i.e. Ruby when she crossed paths with Snow, then Snow and David etc).
I don’t know how feasible it would be but it would be sort of nice to have some off show things–not sure what exactly maybe a journal of Mulan cataloging the journey. Something like this to sort of expand the world even more…
Just something…

I thought Robert Carlyle’s portrayal of Gold’s fear of being without his magic was amazing. Did anybody else notice that the audio changed when he took off the shawl? All the background noise disappeared until Emma placed the shawl back on his shoulders. I don’t know whether or not it was meant to indicate that he was losing his memory when he wasn’t wearing the shawl, but it certainly was a powerful effect.
Last week, I predicted that Emma would initially be concerned about Mr. Gold’s threat at the end of “In the Name of the Brother” and that it might take most of this episode for her to develop sympathy for Mr. Gold, but they managed to do it in just the first few minutes. And despite my initial scepticism, I think the scene worked because of the acting by Robert Carlyle. He made the character so sympathetic at that moment that you could believe Emma understanding that he made his threat out of fear.

It was a really cool effect. I think to indicate how his brain was getting all fuzzy… like he was starting to lose his memory and be completely Mr. Gold.

LOVED that effect. It literally had me anxious for Gold to get his shawl back! And the way Emma was trying to hurry through, never taking her eyes off of him, was pretty amazing. I mentioned in another thread that Emma just can’t help herself when it comes to taking care of people. If you look back, she does it with everyone she comes across who needs help in any way. That’s what makes her a hero.
Back to the shawl coming off, I think that from the instant the shawl was gone, until Emma put it back on him, his Rumpelstiltskin memory was gone completely, and he was stumbling through because he was confused and stunned. I see it as one second he was walking into Granny’s Inn to collect rent, and the next he’s in an airport going through security, dazedly complying with what’s going on around him while his mind races, “WTH is going on?!”
I’m not sure if they’re implying that as long as the shawl gets back to him, his memories will return, or if Emma somehow, knowingly or perhaps not, did something to help him. She did say, “I won’t let that happen,” but she could have just said that to convince him to take it off.
I can’t help but imagine what it’s like when he needs to take a shower.
Emma: “Okay Henry, stand outside the bathroom here and take Gold’s shawl, then shove him inside and tell him to shower and once he comes out, give the shawl back, got it?”
Gold: “Can’t I just shower WITH the shawl?”Also…why couldn’t they just drive to Manhattan? They made it to Boston, it just seems like it would have been easier to avoid the hassle of the airport. But whatevs.

Gold: “Can’t I just shower WITH the shawl?”If I was Gold, I’d have used magic to shrink the shawl and then implant it in a fake tooth. If I needed help, I could always call on a doctor who owed me a favour. Bad news if the shrinking spell wore off, but I’m guessing that a small bit snipped off of the shawl wouldn’t count as the thing Gold holds most dear.
(This sounds like something out of Axe Cop. Now there’s a character I’d like to see in Storybrooke.)

Yeah, I wondered about that. Unless they address it, I’ll chalk it up to not wanting to be stuck in a car with the woman whose child and entire family he’d just threatened to kill. Even though Gold didn’t expect to lose his magic, and so might not have feared anyone else, he knows that Emma has powerful magic as well.

Gold: “Can’t I just shower WITH the shawl?”😆 😆 Dunno if anyone else here ever watched the show Arrested Development, but one of the characters, Tobias, was a “never nude”, an affliction where one can never be completely naked, not even in the shower. He wore denim cutoff shorts at all times, under whatever clothes he was wearing, and yes, even in the shower. There was a scene where Tobias was wearing his cutoffs, crying dramatically in the shower, and now I’ve totally got the mental image of Rumple crying in the shower, still wearing his shawl.

Oh, how I miss that show so much! I’m going to have to get Netflix again just to watch new episodes; although, I fear they won’t live up to the first 3 seasons because so much time has passed, and Running Wilde made me wonder if the new “Arrested Development” will actually live up to my expectations because Running Wilde certainly did not. (Plus, this is probably sacrilegious, but there were a few misfires on AD like Uncle Jack and Maeby’s Hollywood story line, imo, but even those episodes were better than most everything else on at the time.)
Now I’m going to have visions of Rumple dressing up as one of the Blue Men Group to runaway from the trio of evil, and then him dressing up as Mrs. Featherbottom to try to fool Nealfire into liking him again.

OMG Rumple Featherbottom! 😆 😆 I never saw any of Running Wilde, I’m afraid it’s not really fair to him, but Will Arnett will forever be typecast as GOB in my head. He was such a magnificent bastard! My brother has his chicken dance as a ringtone on his phone. 😉 AD was ahead of its time and under appreciated. I’m confident that they will have made the new eps great. They’ve had long enough to work on them, so there’s no excuse for them sucking. Really hoping there’ll be downloadable versions of the new eps so I can see them, (no Netflix access here, but God help me if I can’t get a fresh dose of my Buster).
February 13, 2013 at 4:56 pm #172992raulybarraParticipantI can’t believe it’s Wednesday and we’re halfway to the next episode. Ok… my thoughts after a rewatch. Yes, I do think Rumpel has taken his first steps towards his redemption. First by continuing on without his power and also by the faith he shows in Emma. Looks like she’s still the Savior in some ways.
I think it was always obvious that Regina was going to take a step back after the two steps forward. But that’s part of sanctification and she certainly seems to be following the classic Christian redemption model. She is due for the biggest betrayal of her life, I suspect, when she learns Cora’s true motives. Let’s face it, there’s clearly more than just getting Henry for her daughter in that viscous head of hers.
I’ve got a full write up over at http://thechristiangeek.wordpress.com/category/sci-fi-and-fantasy/once/ . Don’t click for the full article if you haven’t seen the episode though. Everything after the “more” is a spoiler if you’re behind on the series. 🙂
February 14, 2013 at 1:29 am #173135sacrlcParticipantMy OMG moment is when Rumple discovered he lost his magic. I think he suspected it which is why he went into the bathroom to injure his hand and then try to heal it to see if he did.
I believe when his shawl was removed, he did forget his memory, but when it was put back on, he regained it. However, when he went thru the security scanner, his magic went away, probably a combination of the scanner and the fact he was not wearing the shawl. Since he regained his memory after the shawl was put back on, it had to be the scanner that erased the magic.
I can only surmise that he thought as long as he retained his memory, he would otherwise be as he has always been. It didn’t occur to him that his magic was at risk outside of Storybrooke, so his potion did not include the necessary ingredients to protect his magic once he went outside of the town limits.
I do agree with Gaultheria, why didn’t he shrink it or turn it into a handkerchief that he could have kept in is pocket?
And as others have noted, why did he want to fly instead of driving? Flying between Logan and La Guardia/JFK takes a LOT longer than driving between the two.
Don't grow up. It's a trap.
