So OUAT has recently released this new opening screen:
You can see it much larger if you right-click on the photo and choose “View image”.
For those who just want to see who the person is, here, the zoom:Rumplestiltskin! We are not told however, what episode this is from, so do you have any ideas? Perhaps any connections to the magnifying glass he’s holding?
It also seems important that the picture actually has colors and it’s not just a contour. Something to do with the cloak he’s wearing? Could it be Red’s Magic Hood?
EDIT: Someone has just pointed out that ‘O’ in ‘Once’ is also a magnifying glass of some sort. Coincidence?

Otherwise, the magnifying glass may be used to help “study” something, so as to better understand something obscure to clear vision. As for the color red: It could be in reference to Red, or maybe not.
I looked up the significance of the color red. For the culture and time period of Once Upon A Time, I’m guessing it matches the Rennaisance period (midieval).
Reds – Renaissance
High social status, royalty, gentlemen, men of justice.
Worn by judges and similar persons (Scotland, the Holy Roman Empire, England’s Court of Common Pleas, occasionally by peers in English Parliament); royal magistrates, king’s chancellor (France); high government posts (Venice and Florence).
Cosmopolitan man with access to international trading centers.
Power and prestige.
In the Church, red was a symbol of authority, Pentecostal fire, the blood of Christ, martyrdom, crucifixion, Christian charity. Also, could symbolize the satanic and color of hellfire.
At the universities of Padua and Bologna, red was symbolic of medicine.Reds – Medieval
’A lover wears vermilion, like blood’ (later Middle Ages).
A sign of otherworldly power in European legends and folktales. Also, protection: red thread to ward off witches, red coral necklaces to guard against illness.
Sometimes the color of the Virgin Mary’s robes.
The color of kings, identified with kingly virtues of valor and success in war. Also, fire.
A rich man.All this together makes me believe that Rumpel in a red robe may symbolize him being somehow in a position of a “judge” in some capacity by which he studies events that occurred, and is responsible for carrying out (his own faulty version of) justice. As such, this might have something to do with the big fight coming with him, and Captain Hook. I’m guessing the episode is “Tiny”.

Some nice points!
My first impression of Rumple’s robe was also ‘Sherlock Holmes’ type attire, especially that Sherlock is normally portrayed with a magnifying glass too. All Rumple’s missing is the hat and the pipe!
In a sense Sherlock association does tie in with your impression of ‘judge’.January 10, 2013 at 4:22 pm #167785oncewatcherParticipantThank you. Given the robe, my guess is that background stories will tell that Rumple is the reason why Ruby becomes a wolf, and needs the robe to prevent that; that the robe is somehow a “means of grace” in some respect. If I am right, and this is how all of this ties together, I’d say that Ruby has a very large role to play in being an (at least, intended) vehicle for justice. This might explain her presence in pictures taken (at vancityfilming) published from the filming of “Tiny”.

Red is a good guess if Rumplestiltskin is indeed the wizard who gave Granny the enchanted cape to prevent Red’s transformation every full moon. That would make a lot of sense.

I really like this idea, too. I agree that this image likely comes from “The Millers’ Daughter” episode. Why? Well, the miller’s daughter is none other than Cora! And Cora is also the Queen of Hearts, who wore a lot of red! Perhaps Rumpel wearing red somehow foreshadows that outcome. Perhaps Rumple even traveled to Wonderland, since he’s the one who gave the looking glass to Regina to push her mother through all those years later.
As for the magnifying glass, perhaps Rumple uses it to examine something of great value, like the ring the miller’s daughter traded him and also a small, portable child (aka Regina)? The only other time I can recall that we’ve seen a magnifying glass was in the pilot when we first were introduced to Jiminy Cricket.

Interesting! I recall an interview early in S2 in which Eddy and Adam said they wanted to originally make Sheriff Graham into Sherlock Holmes but they couldn’t because they didn’t have the rights at the start of S1. However, it’s entirely possible they’ve since acquired the rights and want to do yet another mash-up of Rumple as the greatest detective of all time!
