THEORY: What if Dr. Whale isn’t Dr. Frankenstein…but instead he is the monster.
We know from the flashback that there are two brothers. One brother, the scientist, brings the other brother, the one with the stitches, to life. Now…let’s make the brothers identical twins. Let’s call the scientist brother, “The Doctor” and lets call the undead stitchy brother “The Monster”. In the flashback, the “doctor” brother needs a heart to bring his “monster” brother/twin alive. He tricks Regina …gets the heart…returns to the castle…puts the heart in the “monster” brother/twin and with a little lightening the “monster” brother is alive. So far so good. But something goes horribly wrong . One of the brothers dies and the other brother, the one we know as Dr. Whale, is transported to Storybrook as part of the curse. We have assumed that it was the “doctor” brother that ended up in Storybrook …but what if it wasn’t . What if the “doctor” brother died, perhaps at the hands of his “monster” brother, and it was actually the “monster” brother who was transported to Storybrook.
Dr. Whale’s arm was ripped off…not much blood and he can get up…put it in a cooler and walk across town??? Not normal.
There have been nods to other stories like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde…also Jack the Ripper…if Whale is the monsters would open up the possibility that these stories are included.
in James Whale’s movie Dr. Frankenstein’s character was named Henry…not Victor like Mr. Gold addresses Dr. Whale. Ironically, one of the suspects in the Ripper murders was Prince Albert VICTOR of Wales.

What about his bet with Rumple? How would the monster brother know what the bet was? How would he have known about Regina’s heart vault and Daniel’s body? How would he know ‘If I bring this guy back from the dead, she will help me’?

He seemed pretty bloody in the basement, and with it’s timeslot they have a limitation of how much gore they can actually show, I believe. All he really managed to do before collapsing (until Regina found him) was make himself a tourniquet, but then he was put into a hospital bed. He didn’t go walking around until later, didn’t he?
I do like the theory at first glance, but I’m not sure how well it works in application. 🙁 🙁 🙁

When I wrote this post I hadn’t seen the episode. I was out of town and could not get enough signal to stream video so I had only read several synopsis. After watching it…no I don’t think Dr. Whale is the evil monster twin as at the very end of the episode he obviously reaches back in his memory to the conversation he had with Rumple in the Enchanted Forest. I do think it will be interesting to see where they take this story….whether or not we see the monster brother again…whether or not we return the The Land without Color…whether or not there is another dimension to the Dr. Whale character.
