While passing the time and listening to my music I started listening to a song by Vienna Teng called “My Medea” and was shocked of how that story reminded me of Regina and Cora’s relationship, her family history if you will. I became curious and researched the Greek mythology of Medea and was shocked on the similar situations that arise. Those of a promise, betrayal and then revenge. Could Cora be also more than one character? Could she also be some kind of Medea character? For those who do not know the story of Medea here is what I found:
Medea falls in love with Jason who arrived at Colchis to claim an inheritance and throne by retrieving the Golden Fleece. She promised Jason that she would help him if he would take her with him and marry her. Jason agreed. Medea appears to be some type of witch because she helps by making creams that help against fire and potions to put things to sleep. She conspires and betrays her father and kills her brother for Jason. Long story short Jason abandons Medea for the King’s daughter Glauce. Medea ends up killing Glauce and continues her revenge by murdering her own two children from Jason, Mermeros and Pheres.
Now this is where I think this story can be in parallel to the what we have gotten as information from Cora’s story. We know that Cora made some type of deal with Rumple to help him with the curse but that was broken, she cheated him out of it. We all know or have an inkling that Cora is in Storybrook for more than to be reunited with her daughter, maybe its revenge.
Here are my theories, maybe the deal was that she would give Regina to him and maybe Cora did love him but once Regina was born he didn’t need Cora anymore and abandoned her. Who knows what the deal was in what she would get in return, maybe he kept his side of the deal but that wasn’t really what she wanted. This could be in parallel to Jason abandoning Medea for Glauce, the kings daughter. Mind you, this theory is if Regina is not Rumple’s child. Now if Regina is his child, it could be that in anger of not returning certain feelings Cora broke her deal and is now on a path of revenge which would be to destroy their child, kind of like what Medea did with her own children.
I know that this is a big leap but shows creators have already shown the use of Greek mythology so it could be that they are using one story within the other. Another reason why I think this is possible or in any way connected is because the main promise made in the Greek mythology was regarding the Golden Fleece. I recall that during the Skin Deep episode it was mentioned during the podcast that the fleece was spotted in Rumple’s Dark Castle. Could that be just a coincidence?
My fear if this theory is correct and Cora is Medea is that all of this might be leading to Regina’s death, because it was the two children that were murdered in that story. If Medea is Cora then maybe Cora’s plan in obtaining Rumple’s dagger is to kill Regina, who could either be his child or represent Glauce in this story, and his son Bae by controlling the dark one and having their end come by his own hands.
Let me know what you guys think because I am really freaking here, Rumple and Regina are my two favorite characters and I do not want harm to come to them.
