ParticipantIS Rumple / Gold evil or is he neutral ???
I posted this on another blog/ forum I belong to but I wanted to see what you guys come up with…..
First of all I admire the actor….. that aside….
I am trying to determine if RUMPLE / Gold is really evil or a victim circumstances who trying to survive. rating made with Rumple in mind but plan to apply it to
(5- action is evil, total because it was meant to harm others)
(4- self serving, interferes with others lives, action did not cause harm)
(3 -Neutral– good but had bad outcome or results)
(2-Neutral– no harmful results )
( 1- actually good — questionable results- outcomes / protective / bad could have been prevented)
( 0– selfless / actually good results / protective )The more evil his action the higher the number …
I can understand where Rumple was coming from… he/ surf was forced into a war … not of his making or choice, for a “master/duke” was cruel. He faced the loss of his child to that same duke………… Wouldn’t you try to do something if it was you. (0)
Rumple does get tricked by the Dark One, and ends up becoming the Dark One. He did set fire to the castle. Add arson to the bad side but knowing the reason behind the action and the target of his wrath, mitigates the action. (2 TO 4, can’t make up my mind.)
Killed the FAIRY GOD MOTHER of Cinderella and then tricked Cinderella into giving up her baby. Could he be trying to replace his one son? Do not know / do not care…. FIVE BIG POINTS Just a thought,
total so far : 7 to 9 possible
I missed the first shows and abc does not have them available so I am waiting for the dvd to come out so I can update my list. If you have some other notations/ theories of his action please let me know.

ParticipantI think Rumpel is Evil.
We don’t really know the situation of the Ogre wars. It may have been die or fight for all we know. The guard that was collecting the children was not good, but i don’t think taking the children to fight is in and of itself evil. We just don’t know enough about the situation.
I would say that burning down the Duke’s house as a 5.
Killing the dark one as a 5 because he meant to kill him and was not tricked into killing him. He didn’t know that the consequences of killing him would be that he would become the new dark one, but he did mean to kill him.
Killing the guards a 5 because with the exception of the head guard, who seems like a nasty piece of work, we just don’t know enough about the situation that killing all of them seems like the right thing to do. And Rumpel could have ordered them away instead of killing them because he had the upper hand.I don’t think we know whether or not the Fairy Godmother is evil or not. Rumpel said she was evil. I am going to give that a 5 only because it seems unnecessary to kill her just to take the wand, but maybe not.
I think the reason why people think Rumpel is not evil is because it seems like he might be working to end the curse. The thing is that may be for his complete self interest. We just don’t know what game he is playing. He may want to die so that he is not the dark one. He may want to kill Regina. He may want to destroy the world. I just don’t think we know enough at this point.
I think even if he helps Emma end the curse the way he is going about it is evil so he is evil.

ParticipantI personally think that he’s self-serving and potentially dangerous but not evil.
HOWEVER, he IS a bad guy. He’s a murderer. I can’t let him off the hook for that.
But I still love his character. A lot. Without him I wouldn’t like the show nearly as much.

ParticipantOh he can be evil and you can still love his character. I definitely think that is true. Bad guys can be fun to watch.

KeymasterI think he’s evil but very cunning about his evilness. I can’t agree that the end justifies Rumpelstiltskin’s means. But whether his intentions are for good is still very unknown.

ParticipantMy first thought is that he is neutral but selfish, but in his selfishness he doesn’t mind taking advantage of others suffering to gain for himself, which makes him evil.
But, you have to remember that people who are considered “evil” don’t really consider themselves evil. Sometimes they think they are acting for the greater good. Doctor Octopus thought he was working to solve the worlds energy crisis. Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker thought that the system of government was in chaos and he had to make everyone listen to his better way. So far, Rumple hasn’t given any indication that his intentions are evil. Regina on the other hand seems to have evil intent.
Rumple is called The Dark One, not The Evil One. Darkness does not imply evilness.

ParticipantRight. The end does not justify the means, so even if Rumpel is desiring to end the curse, the way he is going about it is evil, so he is evil. And it doesn’t seem like, so far at least, that Rumpel has some sort of higher goal. He might be trying to not become the dark one and really if he tricks someone into killing him so that they would be the dark one that is evil also. If he only goal is to take people’s children that seems evil. I think we need more information about his goals.

ParticipantYou keep saying that ‘even if he is trying to end the curse the way he’s going about it is evil.’ Can you explain that more? What exactly is “the way he’s going about it” and how is it evil? I haven’t seen him do anything in Storybrooke that’s really evil. Setting that fire was criminal though.
But I guess you CAN say that Rumple IS evil. If you strictly go by the definition of it. Evil, to me, has such a strong meaning though, that doesn’t fit him. (Hitler was evil. Regina is evil too. They both attacked entire countries… they’re both worse than Rumple)
BUT… Rumple is evil by the definition. Also, one definition of “wicked” is “playfully malicious or mischievous” and I think that fits him QUITE well. He is playful and he is malicious because he does mean harm to other people sometimes. Like Gepettos parents with that potion that killed them…
So if I’m going to call him wicked, malicious, mischievous, a murderer, immoral, criminal, and bad… I better call him evil too.

ParticipantI think Rumple/Gold is self serving. I think he has a plan and puts everything into motion to achieve want HE wants. He is a complex character. I wonder if we will see Mr. Gold as sort of a “redemption” story?
Great topic!
