He didn’t say the dagger had not left his side in centuries, he said it had not left his possession. Now that poses two issues:
Possession is defined in law as being within a person’s physical proximity, control or domain. (this is usually discussed in drug cases – in response to the Lindsay Lohan defence of “oh the cocaine isn’t mine, these are someone else’s pants!!!” The law says ‘tough. The pants are on you. Your are in possession of the contents of the pants.’ Then there’s quite a lot of cases that discuss whether knowledge is required for possession and it’s on the fence. There are many jurisdictions, like Victoria, which reverse the onus of proof in drug possession – the accused is assumed to be aware of the item in their control unless they prove otherwise).
Now, there is no way in any kind of reality that Gold flew on a modern airplane with a dagger in his physical possession. So I think we can assume he is not working on the physical proximity limb of the definition of possession.
Is it within his control? If he has placed it somewhere with a powerful enchantment protecting it, yeah, I’d say it’s still within his control – and therefore still within his possession.
Pretty tenuous possession though. Get back to Storybrooke and check your dagger sunshine!!!
Now: if Cora is holding the real dagger and not a fake, then clearly it wasn’t within a protection spell and not within his possession…. and Gold is just talking rubbish as he’s just been stabbed with a poisoned hook.
Speaking of…. can’t wait to see Hook rock up back in Storybrooke. Travelling on bus, rail or plane dressed as the stereotypical pirate is going to be a challenge 😆

Or maybe he split the dagger somehow.
I can’t believe he would just tell them, when he is coming back to Storybrooke within 24 hours or literally will die trying. He’s not that stupid.March 4, 2013 at 11:35 am #176840PheeParticipantI think at this point in time, Rumple’s had to admit that he’s gotta rely on others to protect him, given that he’s lying there dying from a poisoned chest wound and all, so it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he told them the location of the real dagger. Frankly, it’s a pretty awesome hiding spot for it, better than in his shop. People can wander in and out of his shop any time, he doesn’t have a protection spell on the place 24/7. But no one ever even thinks of going up into the clock tower.

“And now the Dark One can finally be controlled.”
Um. In that moment it didn’t sound like David was just going to hold onto the dagger for safekeeping. So much for that we-won’t-interfere-with-each-other pact. To me, it sounded like David would have used that dagger to keep a leash on Gold.
Just my opinion, but I kinda hope the dagger’s fake. It would suck if the result of Rumple trusting “family” is that he gets screwed over by Snowing leading his enemies directly to the dagger’s real hiding place.

THIS. Rumple needs to learn to rely on others and the goodness of others, and not magic.
I think it’s the real dagger, because it makes the next episode even more exciting. DRAMA time!!!

I mean isn’t it supposed to be secret, or has that gone out of the window in the last few centuries since he killed that mute maid?

I was TOTALLY shocked. And a little miffed. It’s supposed to be his biggest secret but somehow they know? Cora knowing, I get. That’s perfectly fine and makes a lot of sense given that she’s the Miller’s Daughter. But The Charmings??

It might make for more family drama if Rumple were actually to trust Snow and Charming, but Rumple is a smart man. He doesn’t believe Snow and Charming, who are without magic, could face-off with the likes of two powerful sorceresses like Cora and Regina. Only the Dark One could ever take them on. No, I just don’t believe that after centuries, Rumple would be so short-sighted. Also, there is a reason for the protection spell over his pawn shop. Why else would that be in place except to keep two powerful sorceresses at bay? He can glimpse the future, so he must have seen some of this coming (i.e “the final battle will begin”). Maybe I’m wrong, but it would be a surprise unless facing his mortality makes Mr. Gold desperate enough to think two muggles can take on powerful witches.

But did he expect that they’d have to take them on? The whole purpose of the Charmings finding the dagger wasn’t so they could use it to confront anyone, it was so Cora and Regina wouldn’t find it. The Charmings getting it first was meant to eliminate the threat of anyone wreaking havoc with it. It’s just that Cora and Regina were onto them, and the plan to keep the dagger out of their hands ended up being a bust.
