A Lost star is going on a magic carpet ride.

Naveen Andrews has booked his first major U.S. TV gig since the ABC cult hit ended in 2010 and it’s one doozy of a role: Andrews will play classic Disney villain Jafar from 1992’s hit animated film Aladdin on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, debuting this fall on ABC.

The new series’ creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, who worked on Lost, revealed the epic casting news at Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’s Comic-Con panel on Saturday. Oh, and Andrews made a surprise appearance!
Kitsis described Jafar as a “very, very, very evil villain” and said their take on the character will be “very frightening.” We. Can’t. Wait.

Of taking on the role, Andrews said, “I hope it will be something like you’ve never seen before.” Casting Andrews was a no-brainer for Kitsis and Horowitz; in fact, they wrote the role for him! “We absolutely had this character in mind and we knew we wanted Naveen to play it. We asked him he said yes and we said lets save it for Comic-Con,” Kitsis explained.

When they began to talk about this at panel at SDCC I think I had a fit. I was spazzing so hard! And then we all spazzed over at the SDCC OUATinWL thread with all the tweets we posted about it.

So is Jafar going to be in OUAT or OUATIW?

Jasmine and Aladdin are sure to follow Jafar soon.

OUATinWL; we don’t know if he is going to cross over. But it sounds like he may have joined the cast as a regular becuse OUATinWL posted the news on FB.

I think, his name was brought up as a fan favorite for Jafar or Aladdin.

He’s too old for Aladdin, but he’s going to make a very sexy Jafar. What’s funny is that he was married/life partner/whatever it was with Barbara Hershey for a long time. (They’re not together anymore, are they?)  Hehe…it’s funny to think of the Queen of Hearts and Jafar as a power couple.

lol at the power couple thing…..Guess that is one storyline we aren’t going to see, though art imitating life if they are revealed as exes…..well if too awkward for Hershey and Andrews to be on set, there’s always Rose to play a younger Cora pre-wonderland, I suppose.  Rumpel’s not the only one with foresight, I guess, maybe Jafar knew Cora would end up there, and that’s part of how she rose to such power there.

    😆

Sounds like Jafar is gonna be a real piece of work, and I can’t wait to see Naveen play him! The guy does that cold, calculated, emotionally detached thing so well. I’ve got some seriously high hopes for Jafar now.

It’s curious that now we’ll have a good genie in Cyrus, the bad guy who we know of as having become a genie in Jafar, and we also have Giancarlo Esposito returning briefly and he’s OUAT’s resident genie. How exactly will they all fit together?

    Comic-Con interview with Naveen:

“He does have a rather dark and twisted agenda that will affect all the characters in the show.”

Thanks for the link.  Wow that interviewer seemed awkward. He rolled with it, but sigh….
