In case anybody hasn’t guessed by now, I absolutely love the role of Hook on Once Upon A Time. Something occurred to me though.
Nothing against Colin O’Donoghue. He’s shown himself to be a really great actor. As for Jaime Dornan (Graham), fans already loved him and really kicked up a fuss when his character died.
Like I said, nothing against Colin O’Donoghue. I’d love to see him stay on the show for years. All that aside, I do have a question: Why did they pick a different actor to play Hook?
It occurred to me that Jaime Dornan would have been a great Hook, given the chance. Color his hair, put in the ear ring….that really could have been a great peace offering with Graham’s fans on the show. Why didn’t they give Jaime a shot at that role before they picked somebody else?

January 24, 2013 at 11:14 pm #169907schmackyParticipantUh, it wouldn’t have made any sense…

No, not the character. Just the actor. Jaime’s a really good actor, and I can see him doing great in either role. I’m just saying I thought it would have been nice if they’d casted him instead of Colin O’Donoghue since fans were so mad over Graham. Hook wouldn’t be Graham, but Jaime would still be there.
Of course the point is moot now since there’s somebody else in that role (for now), but I’m just wondering why they offered it to somebody new instead of a show veteran.
If Colin ever has to leave the show, Jaime Dornan would do every bit as good a job as Hook (if not better).

So you think people would have noticed the difference?
January 25, 2013 at 12:02 am #169916madhattressParticipantfrankly it would be bizarre to have the same actor playing two different roles, especially in Once Upon A Time, it would make no sense at all

Jamie just got a new part in Great Britain so it is unlikely he will be back. H&K has stated no one is “SAFE” on the show so in the future expect some characters to fade into the woodwork, change or leave or be killed off. That is what keeps the show evolving.
Also actor availability has a big influence on the show. Example They lost Sidney / Genie in the Mirror and August when they signed for other shows…. they probably will not come back until they are available again.

Do I think people would have noticed it’s the same actor? Uh… yeah.

As for Hook, I was never happy about his casting. This has nothing at all to do with shipping, just my view of who Captain Hook is. In the movies and book, Captain Hook was meant to be a counterpoint to Peter Pan. Hook represented adulthood, growing up, and everything Pan was scared of. Most characterizations of Hook have actors with this imposing aura. He was one of the only villians I was really afraid of as a child (along with Cruella De Ville). When we found out he was going to be on Once and they said he was going to be a rival of Rumple’s, I was really excited. So when I saw Colin I was kind of disappointed. It has nothing to do with his attractiveness, but I wanted someone who was more of a contemporary of Robert Carlyle. Someone who could go toe to toe with him and we’d really believe they were rivals. The casting of Barbara Hershey for Cora was perfect, but they fell flat with Hook. Instead of a true rival, we have a school yard bully.
I couldn’t picture Jamie Dornan as Hook or any pirate, but I do think he’d have made a fine Robin Hood.
