I’ve been debating for years whether to read the Outlander series. It’s been recommended so many times I always put it off for later. I think the large number of sequels is the reason I’ve held off.
Haven’t seen the show. I don’t get Starz, but I think I’d prefer to read at least the first novel before I see it. Maybe it will move up on my “to be read” list.

Sorry I didn’t answer you before! I missed the question. They had the premiere online for free for a bit. It has, so far, been quite magnificent.
When I read the books (I got through the first 3 before becoming exhausted a third of the way into the 4th!) I figured there was no way they could personify Jamie. Even back then people always speculated who would play certain well-loved literary figures in movies. The Jamie in my mind was so vivid to me, I didn’t want it being spoiled (cough Lestat cough) by a sub-par actor portrayal. It was pure magic in my brain and there was no way I felt it could be done justice in a big splashy Hollywood film. I am so very glad it didn’t make it to the big screen. There really WAS no Jamie in existence in the acting world.
Serialized TV, on cable is the perfect way to go. And season two has already been ordered up, I hear
I think Clare is spot on to my mind’s portrayal. And well…
Isn’t Jamie just perfect after all??? Smiling even now as I write this. Just abso-verrrra-lutely perrrrfect.
The 1st episode is still out on the Starz site, it’s also on youtube 🙂
Haha, I did that with the GOT books lol … but now I’ve decided not to read those books anymore, as the show is too different.Totally agree with you on the TV series over movie/s. A movie or even series of movies just would not have done the story justice at all! In all honestly the 1st ep felt in many ways, like a big budget movie with the speculator back drops & the way it was shot etc.
I’m hoping Peter Jackson will get it together & finally get started on the Temeraire TV series- which he decided would make a better tv series than movie series for the same reasons as Outlander (however, dude be dragging the chain on that project & I want Napoleon’s war on dragon back now, darn it!)Yep they have a season 2 already- I believe Outlander’s ratings have brought in recorded breaking highs for Starz & many are calling it the next GOT (as in massive mass following) 😉
Having watched ep1 before reading the books, I kind of think of the actors as the characters, but the book Jamie I thought of as ‘bigger’physically/bulk wise (kind of like a Chris Hemsworth/Thor type body) & darker haired than TV Jamie lol- however TV Jamie is the ‘perfect’ Jamie in spirit & that translates into looks as well, he simply ‘is’ Jamie for me now & I suspect, that just like Daniel Radcliffe took over my mental ‘book’ image of Harry Potter- (he looked nothing like what I originally pictured Harry looking like in my mind), Sam Heughan will do the same with Jamie & that’s soooooooooo not a bad thing lol 😉
Clare is spot on to my minds eye as well- maybe just a little taller if I had to nit pick about something lol, otherwise I cant fault anything at all about her- That moment Jamie tells her to come or he’ll throw her over his shoulder, the actress’s expression was just pure Clare & when she drinks out of the wine bottle- sold me totally on Clare.
They certainly hit the Outlander casting jackpot!I also love the fact they dont subtitle the Gaelic & they allow us into Clare’s thoughts through the little bits of narrative- it really draws you into the world & really puts you as a viewer, into experiencing the story through Clare’s perspective- just like in the book.

I’d been recommended the series many times as well, but never got around to it because ‘time travel’, ‘romance’ & stuff – I got bored & decided to give ep1 of Outlander a go to find out if the story was really as interesting as everyone kept telling me it was. The 1st ep (of 16), really only covers the prologue & 1st 3 chapters of the book (there are 896pgs, split into 41chapters)- which is why there was no way I could wait 2 & 1/2 weeks for ep2 & had to read the 1st book to find out what happens after the 1st episode lol.
August 24, 2014 at 11:43 pm #280856ellemo78ParticipantI ended up finding and watching the first episode last night. My friend was waxing lyrical about the books and is scared to watch the show b/c she loves the books so much. However I will reserve my thoughts until I’ve watched a couple more eps as I am having a small issue with the time travelling aspect. But with most things it usually takes me a while to get into them. 🙂

August 24, 2014 at 11:43 pm #280857JosephineParticipantI have to say that Daniel Radcliff never replaced my original version of Harry, nor did any of the other actors. I still have my book version in my head even today when I reread the series. I consider the movies as just an interpretation of the books. Not what I picture when I read, but very good versions.
The time travel has kept me away from Outlander series. I love a good romance and Scottish stuff, but time travel is not my thing. That was my big hang up from reading. It’s one of those books I know I’m going to read someday, it’s just a matter of when.

August 24, 2014 at 11:50 pm #280858Bo-PeepsParticipantIt isn’t your normal or even abnormal time travel. It is distinctly different. Especially since we follow a strong and independent woman in the lead. The realism takes you right into the story, even when she passes through centuries.
Josephine I would, as others have, highly recommend Outlander as a soul inspiring escapism drama/romance/time travel. Especially if we have a fast arriving fall and winter 🙂 Once you get with the rhythm of her writing, if it quite possible no one will see you for a few days until you finish it (grin)
Surayya~ I bought book five and six at the local used- book sanctuary…it’s about time I tackled some Celtic history again, you know, to keep in touch with my distant heritage (wink wink) yeah, that’s the ticket! When I go back in time from the comfort of my overstuffed reading chair, I want to be Clare. Again and again and again.

Yes agree with this- the time travel is more used as a tool to get a ‘modern’ women into 1700-1800 Scotland, it doesnt (at least in book 1, which is the only one I’ve read to date) get into the whole timey whimey aspect of time travel & the consequences of it (I totally geek out on Continuum for that 😉 VERY well done Sci Fi/Time travel show)- what happens, happens & then we move on in Outlander 🙂

I cheated & DL the ebooks (I tend to try before I buy ‘real’ copies, as I have full bookshelves for Africa & very little room left for any more lol)- If I love the other books as much as the 1st, then I’ll kill a tree to have the ‘real’ deal to read lol- Nothing better than a good book in your hands on a cold winters day (ereaders just dont ‘feel’ the same):)
August 25, 2014 at 4:05 am #280863MyrilParticipantHaven’t read the books and not planning to do so, but three episodes in now I think this show might be a keeper on my watch list. Don’t care much about the romance (quelle surprise 😛 ), but find it interesting enough to watch, how a rather modern woman is coping with this different time and world, how they’re portraying the people and society of this time. Besides, Scotland is always charming. Not to mention it’s always worth a look when Ronald D. Moore is involved and Bear McCreary is doing the score (busy man at the moment, Defiance, Agents, Outlander, Da Vinci’s Demons, Black Sails, Intruders, Constantine).
Jamie, Sam Heughan is a not just a looker.
Claire, Caitriona Balfe looks quite like a younger version of a good friend of mine, Claire even has some of her character traits. Fun.
Like that they don’t do subtitles for the Gaelic. So we have to rely on other things like Claire has to to get an idea what they’re talking about at times. Of course one though can find helpful sides, blogs for understanding more like this one http://greatscotblog.com/ (not mine, but it has some good stuff)
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯
