So one thing that has bugged me for a while is travel using Jeffersons hat, and the 1st episode of Season 2 just made it worse.
When Regina used the hat in Season 1 to retrieve her poison apple, it seemed like Jefferson opened a portal to a point in the past – effectively time travel. Regina existed here in Storybrooke (the present) and in Fairytale Land (the past), at the same time, linked by the hat. So at the moment she used the hat to get the apple, that was clearly a point in Regina’s past. Getting Snow to eat the apple definitely happened in Regina’s past.
Yet when Regina used the hat in ‘Broken’, it sent them to a Fairy Tale land that was concurrent with our worlds time. Why didn’t it send them back to a point like in Season 1 – ie the past.
I suppose you could sum it up by saying why didn’t Storybrroke Emma & Snow pop up on the hill next to where Fairytale Land Regina was giving the poison apple to Fairytale Land Snow? Snow White from Storybrooke could have said hello to her Fairytale Land verison of herself. It just doesn’t make any sense.
For that matter, if Regina had have had more magic when she went to retrieve the apple in season one, she could theoretically have used the hat to open a portal big enough to travel fully through (like when they went to wonderland). Does that mean she could have visited her past self?
All this is just very confusing. Can the hat time travel? Or does it just port between worlds? And what’s up with time between the worlds? When the hat was used one time it retrieved things from the past, yet another time sent people to world that now matched our worlds time. And if it can time travel, I just hope 4 or 5 seasons down the line they use the hat as a plot device to undo all the events we have watched. I think a time traveling hat is a terrible idea and they should clear this up quickly.
Cheers,
Kiwi.

She tried to send it to the present, which she thought was oblivion. So she sent the wraith there. I always assumed the hat could time travel, but only because there was nothing left of FTL. I think I actually thought FTL was no more from some time around then I think.

He told her to think of what she wanted & the exact time & place it was in & he would be able to retrieve it.
When they went to wonderland, they went in real time because Jefferson didn’t direct the Hat to go forward or back in time.
Same thing for Regina when she sent the wraith through, she wanted it sent to FTL but didn’t fix a particular point in time, so they came out in ‘real’ time.
That’s just my understanding of how the Hat works 😉

Yes the hat can time travel, it takes you to whatever world or time in that world you want. She was trying to retrieve the apple so they opened a portal back in time, this time she was trying to open a portal to the present of the EF which she thought was an oblivion but there’s actually what remains of the EF. They haven’t explored the limits of the time travel thing they’ll probably go into it later on but maybe there’s some kind of paradox thing that won’t allow them to travel to a time where they already exist.
