Of course. Because the new Maleficent movie made tons of money.

I personally think it’s got more to do with True Blood ending, rather than the Maleficent movie. I always got the feeling that they wanted to do more with the character.

I think its both. Maleficent is a pretty major Disney villain. They hardly used her in the first season, and with what little time she had, she cleary had a story (whats the deal with the unicorn? why did she target aurora’s mother? why is she…nice? why is keeping the dark curse and other dark magic safe from others?). So, yeah, I think they actually do have something planned for Mal that True Blood prevented them from revealing. Now that True Blood is done (and ive shed my tears over its finale :() and that Maleficent’s movie was a pretty big deal, its a perfect time to bring her back in.

Kristen was on The Nerdist Podcast a few weeks back and explained how she got the role on OUAT. When they asked her to do Maleficent she was already busy filming TB and only decided to take the role on the flip of a coin.  She shot both episodes on weekends when she wasn’t busy.  They probably kept Mals’ story on the backburner for if and when she would be available to shoot in Vancouver for multiple episodes.
