I read this on wikipedia-
“Nostos (Greek: νόστος) (pl. nostoi) is the Greek word for homecoming, the idea of returning home from a long journey. Nostos is a theme dealt with in many Homeric writings such as the Odyssey, in which the main character, Odysseus, strives to get home after the Trojan War. The plural term nostoi is applied to Greek heroes’ homeward journeys after the taking of Troy and is the name of one of the poems of the Epic Cycle on that theme”Maybe they need to jump in the well and then they will appear in lake Nostos in Fairytale land.
I always wondered why, what’s his name, cinderellas husband, disapeared near the well and you thought he had fallen in, but then he just magically appeared in Storybrook like nothing had happened, and there was never an explanation to it. But that’s probably it- he fell in the well in Fairytale land and ended up in Storybrook.[adrotate group="5"]November 21, 2012 at 2:13 am #161486ClessidorParticipant@medchen wrote:

But anyway I really like the idea that the name of the lake could based on that greek word. Sirens are also from Greek mythology. So that could work.

That sounds a little bit to easy for me. But when I rember it has been said, that the wishing well has the power to return that which is lost to its rightful place. The question is: If this also includes real persons?
Well, a well can really be a portal to other worlds. Here in Germany one of the most popular Grimm fairy tales is “Frau Holle” (Mother Hulda) in which you can enter her world (Maybe it’s the Celtic Otherworld) by jumping in a well. But more interesting is that “Frau Holle” is much more than a normal fairy tale character. She is part of German folklore e.g. there exist a lake called Frau-Holle-Teich in Germany about which it has been said that it is possible to enter her world through that Lake.@medchen wrote:

I think that his name was Thomas. Yeah and that is still a big mystery, what happened with him. But we never saw him after the curse was broken, so maybe we will see him again to find out what happened.
And he mustn’t fell into the well, he could have been kidnapped by something we don’t know yet. Maybe somone has turn him into a frog and that’s is the Reason why he left something of his clothes at the well.
But I don’t think that the well brought him into Storybrook. I think it was just the Dark Curse.“There were thousands and thousands of forms of joy in the world, but that all were essentially one and the same, namely, the joy of being able to love.”

Lake Gnostos therefore has some connection to being like a “fountain of knowledge” with the ability to return that which was lost.

And that was round about episode 9 or 10 when we also know that Mary Margaret, Emma and Hook (and maybe Cora?) are coming back to Storybrooke. Could this mean they sailed on Hook's ship into the lake? There was also a water geyser in the new promo so who knows? I'm sort of hoping, since all the things lead to water, that this means there will be an episode on Little Mermaid, there was a point where the actress playing Cora said she turned someone into a fish!
Either way, I think the lake and it’s name could be quite important, so far none of the names in the shoe were chosen randomly!November 21, 2012 at 3:38 pm #161534GrimmsisterParticipantI checked on abc homepage and they spell it Nostos, this is taken from the recap of ‘What happened too Fred’-
“Charming asks if there is anything he can do. Abigail tells him of the legend of Lake Nostos, “Its waters are said to have magical properties that can return to you something that was once lost.””November 21, 2012 at 9:13 pm #161625MyrilParticipantInteresting.
There is more in the Wikepidia article. It points to the term ‘nostalgia’ – what we understand as longing for the past, but it has been used before as a medical term for homesickness, which was seen as a serious illness on its own (the German term “Heimweh” for homesickness sounds so much more poetic). Can understand nostalgia as the longing for that which you’ve lost (home, past). And with the waters of Lake Nostos you can still the longing (thirst for the past, what is gone) by getting the lost back.
@Clessidor Of course, Frau Holle! *headdesk* How could I not think of that.To spark some more speculation adding: In the tale of “Frau Holle” the reason that a maiden jumps into the well in the first place is, that she lost a spindle in the well, which she wanted to clean from her own blood. She was forced to spin all day and worked so hard, her fingers bled. No, story has nothing to do with the fairy tale of Rumpelstiltskin. Just a coincidence. 😉
There is one problem with the theory of the well in Storybrook being a way to Lake Nostos in Fairy Tale land: the lake was already dried out before the curse (episode Lady of the Lake, 2×03) Makes me wonder about the wishing well in Storybrook we see in “What Happened to Frederick” and in the season 01 final. That well must have some magic anyway, as it looks the same but is not in the same place in the two episodes (nagging about details). But does it has to do anything with Lake Nostos, besides that they use the same description of magical power, and that August mentions, that a legends says its water is coming from an underground lake? How is that possible, seeing that Lake Nostos was dried out before the curse? Or hasn’t the lake dried out but someone stole its water, hidding it somewhere else? Or was the water not totally gone but just disappeared underground? But why should it now be in our world feeding the well?
It’s not the same well though where Prince Thomas disappeared, that one looked different, and I doubt, they meant it to be the same one.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯

Well saw the sneak peak for next ep. Seems like they ARE going to use the well too get from Fairytale land to Storybrook. Then why not the other way around… If they will want to go back that is.
November 26, 2012 at 5:48 pm #162410evilqueenParticipantdon’t think so, the well is supposed to have a power “to return that which is lost to its rightful place” and once the characters get to SB, they aren't so much lost then, are they?
November 26, 2012 at 6:19 pm #162417GrimmsisterParticipantThat depends where their rightfull place is. And who desides where someones rightfull place is? Do they deside themselves or what? maybe the well itself desides.
Regina (old Regina) would say, their place is in Storybrook as her servants.
Henry would say, everyone should go back too Fairytale land.
Snow would say, my place is beside my charming husband.
Destiny would say, every man to his own trade.November 26, 2012 at 6:31 pm #162420evilqueenParticipantYes but if SB wasn’t their rightful place, they wouldn’t be able to get back there to start with, right?
