Hopefully this show will last for more than two seasons. The writers will be faced with the challenge of keeping the story from becoming stale. Does anyone else think that eventually there might be a chance for redemption for Regina? Don’t get me wrong, she’s EVIL, but she seems to be having more and more sincere moments lately. I don’t think the show can continue on for more than two seasons with the same premise. I’m wondering if Regina will be killed off or reformed to make way for a new evil? Perhaps Mr. Gold could rise as the main villain eventually if everyone’s happy endings get in the way of his own? I don’t know, I just get the feeling they are giving us hints that there is a person underneath Regina’s hard (evil) exterior. It would be strange/interesting to see her transformed into a heroine to help those she cursed.

There is still plenty of material to use and I think we’ve seen possibilities in a few episodes this season. I believe the SW/PC story is just about covered, though we will have more of MM/David to see. I’m theorizing another FTL couple will be the focus of Season 2, such as Ella/Thomas and their story.

Regina may be on the road to redemption but it may be a long, rocky one at that. She’s in a similar way to Rumpel in that she’s has almost lost everything to magic and her desire for vengeance. Up to epi 21, she has lost the last of her magic, the last token of Daniel’s memory, and possibly Henry. It may all depend on the survival of the latter. Regina enacted the curse by taking the life of Henry, her father. The question at this point is, has she changed enough to keep the curse and her vengeance from taking the life of Henry, her son?
Perhaps Mr. Gold could rise as the main villain eventually if everyone’s happy endings get in the way of his own?
I think that would likely be the only way Mr. Gold would be a villain on the show. He would probably do anything to find Bae, even if it meant razing SB.

Do not forget they just unearthed a treasure trove of unpublished German folk and fairy tales not published since the 1800s. I am sure there will be a tale or two that needs to be explored.
I would be very surprised if Disney does not release several of the new fairy tales as a new movie someday in the future. Disney is just beginning to explore other ethnic tales so there is the possibilities of new favorites emerging.
They can also do an off shoot and CREATE / WRITE there own original tales….

Rumplestiltskin is an obvious option but many others could become “villains” or foils in pursuit of their own ends or under the influence of spells. Jefferson has shown himself willing to go to great lengths to get what he wants. So has August and even Gepetto. We have seen Snow be villainous after losing her love. Who knows what Emma will do once she finally believes. I don’t expect her to gt cast in a villain role but she might have goals that are at cross purposes with everyone else. Don’t forget Malificent and king George back in FTL. I think there are all sorts of directions they could go. Don’t forget, these are LOST writers — they are masters at the pull-back-and-see-the-bigger-picture device which allows for all sorts of new storytelling within the same sets of characters. I have faith!!

I think that Regina and Gold will probably continue to serve as the “resident evil” characters in SB – however I also think that they will be the evil characters that will continue to move toward redemption throughout the life of the show. It will probably be a three steps forward two steps back kind of situation for both of them and I’m sure all kind of things will be tossed their way that will affect their path toward redemption.
But then I think they will also throw in some “guest” evil characters that could last a whole season, multiple seasons, or just a few episodes that will stir things up and potentially mess with Regina and Gold. Think about it – there’s Maleficient and Ursula, the evil characters from Mulan and Aladdin, the Queen of Hearts, Cora, James’ father, Captain Hook, etc.
And because of how they play around with the characters’ natures to begin with – there are all kinds of things they can do with the “good” characters as well.

I do think the show has the possibility of about 5 seasons, but I can’t really see Regina lasting that long because of the nature of her character. Like most two-dimensional villains, there’s gotta be redemption, and that usually results in a tragic death.
