Yeah, it’s this inconsistency I think. All this starting and stopping ~ and introducing new characters and not following up with them. Even with the main cast – it feels like ages since we saw Ruby or Granny or Whale. Sure, it might have been 3 or 4 episodes ago, but it feels like a long time. I’ve been trying to convince people to watch the show, but for the casual viewer it’s pretty hard to follow mid-season.
It’s nearly impossible to compare the two, but take Game of Thrones. It has a super convoluted plot and more screen time (55 min vs. 40) but basically every main storyline is continued every week. I think that’s something the writers could do better, imho.

LAST YEAR … OUAT / ABC did several things to bring in the viewers….. Marathon sessions so people / family could get hooked…. release of a DVD that allowed people who missed the start of the season to get caught up AND interested in show.
If there is an Easter break they should have a marathon session… and maybe release the first 10-12 episodes in DVD format with a discount coupon to use toward DVDs of the last half of the season.
The problem with OUaT it is really easy to loose track of the show and archs if you miss a show. I can usually only watch on TV as I have limited bandwidth as does a good 50% of the households in the USA.
It also might be nice if ABC would run reruns of OUaT during the summer. That would really hook more viewers into wanting to see Season 3.
Anybody have any other ideas.Nonnie

,Totally agree Once is too good a show to be showing numbers like this ABC needs to step up it’s marketing to make sure things don’t get worse. The problem with Once like you said is for a lot of people if they miss an episode they feel like the’re completely out of it so they figure they’ll catch up at the end of the season and pick it up again. They need to figure out a way to carry the momentum from the start of the season to the end better.

The question is, what does ABC expect, do they get the audience they want to reach or not. And before they will think about cancelling they will have to come with something as good to fill this time slot.
The numbers aren’t even bad, they are solid. And Once Upon a Time does particular well with key Women.
And only partially can compare it with a show like Games of Thrones: that one is a cable show with a different structure (10 episodes per season, they have a different concept for commercials). Looking at the numbers of the season 2 final of Game of Thrones by the way we had there a 4.2 million viewers and a rating of 2.2. So if you just look at the numbers it doesn’t tell all the story.
One other thing: I would be rather cautious to take anything like Paleyfest or even Comicon as all representative for viewership. And just because some shout louder than others that doesn’t tell all about how important their number in viewership is, it tells maybe something about devotion. Just saying. No offense. Just the social scientist in me talking here.

Well, that is the risk these kind of shows always take. There is a reason why police procedurals are over long periods among the top viewed shows, it’s easier to skip episodes, getting more random viewers. You can do what you want on Once Upon, unless you turn the show into a procedural random viewers will not watch this show. And good luck with turning any random viewers into regulars.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯

I agree with everything Nonnie said! ABC seems to take on faith that people were going to come every week b/c parts of the fan base is very eager over OUaT (like all of us!). But they need to really sell it to the casual viewer cause that’s where we’re losing.
Yes, and they need to clearly indentify the elements a casual viewer will be attracted to, and those are the elements they need to respond with.

.March 5, 2013 at 12:24 am #177160sarah_tnParticipantI know they were in trouble by season 3. Ironically, it was because of hiatuses, and too many flash-backs. I guess old habits die hard. I’ll look around, and see if I can find the numbers.

The lead in show – American funniest home video’s – is not a big draw to many viewers and to watch Once, they have to deliberately turn the channel to ABC from whatever else they were watching. When Once is not on – they look for another show to watch or stay on the channel they are already on, and many times, will continue to do this, even when Once is back on, because the other shows are reliably shown every week. Unfortunately, the ratings suffer. 😥
So, what does everybody think would be a better night of the week for Once?
Don't grow up. It's a trap.
March 5, 2013 at 1:04 am #177167nonnieParticipantProblem is if the numbers of the people ABC wants to reach is not good enough …You do not get season 3 ….. you do not get the DVD production … Production just kind of drifts away.
I know DVR and on line viewing helps the numbers of viewers but if people do not watch
OFF TOPIC: DID you notice that for every 10 minutes of show there was 5 minutes of commercials? It drives me nuts..
.March 5, 2013 at 1:18 am #177168MatthewPaulModeratorI do think that Once may at least make it to Season 4, so they can sell reruns to syndication. One other factor that could possibly tie into Once’s ratings weakening is that it had a stronger lead-off program with Desperate Housewives. Compared to Desperate Housewives, Revenge has been rather weak and therefore there is less of a draw to ABC’s Sunday Night lineup.
As for an alternate night, it’s tricky. Monday and Tuesdays are normally reserved for reality shows on ABC, aside from Castle on Mondays at 10 and Body of Proof on Tuesdays at 10. Castle is too successful to go anywhere, but Body of Proof is in danger of cancellation. The 10 pm slot on Tuesdays aren’t great ratings wise in general, so maybe not the best place to move Once to. Wednesdays are all reserved for comedy, aside from Nashville at 10pm, which does pretty well. There is the Thursday slot at 8pm right before Grey’s Anatomy, which Zero Hour was just cancelled on. However, Once would be competing with both American Idol and the Big Bang Theory/Two and a Half Men. Fridays and Saturdays are just death slots for failing shows or shows that are cheap enough to do modestly well. Despite the Football and Award shows dilemma during the winter, Sundays at 8 still seems like the best place to keep Once, sadly.

.About the commercials: I am glad I’m not the only one who noticed that! Right there, that tells me they’re having to draw in money for production from outside of the network, and that’s coming from more sponsors. Folks, that scares me because it has me asking if the show’s already in trouble, and how that translates to next season! 😮 😯
