I have noticed that over the past 3 episodes, several characters have referred to their lives as ”stories.”

Is this just the writers emphasizing ”untold story”, or is there more to it?

Within the show, I have always assumed that the characters were real people, but were treated as story characters in our world…because they are from another dimension and are therefore just legends to us. We had never met them, but we know of them.

But then in ep 2, Rumpelstiltskin knew the name of the land that the key led to, and referred to Charlotte’s life as a ”story” when he could have said that her ”life would be on pause if she goes through that door.” Did Rumple know that they were all just story characters and not real people even before the curse was cast?
