Many fans have been speculating on what is Regina’s connection to Rumpelstiltskin. Well, here’s a hint:
Think Barbara Hershey was scary as the psycho mother of Natalie Portman in Black Swan? Just wait until you catch her debut as Cora, the mother of the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), on the April 8 episode of ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
“Girls say they’ll never grow up to be like their mothers, but evil comes from somewhere,” says executive producer Edward Kitsis. “Cora would look at the mother from Black Swan and think she was weak.”
During Barbara’s multi-episode arc, the series will flash back to show Snow White as a little girl and the Evil Queen as a young princess living with her fairy-tale family before her heart turned bitter cold. “You will finally find out why the Evil Queen hates Snow White,” hints executive producer Adam Horowitz.
Adds Edward, Cora has “an interesting connection to Rumpelstiltskin and an agenda she does not like to veer from.” Her past “is just hinted at this year,” he says. “But we have major plans for Cora in the future.”
And here’s a behind the scenes photo of a young Regina and her mother for episode 1×16 “Heart of Darkness.”

Guess there is some really interesting plot coming our way. *_*February 28, 2012 at 1:04 am #137787hjbauParticipantThere is a theory floating around that maybe Regina’s mother is the millers daughter that the original Rumpel story is about. That would make Regina’s mother queen and then Regina a princess. That would make Regina the child that Rumpel took or was supposed to take. I am not really sure about that story. That could explain their relationship. Maybe Rumpel taught the queen her magic.

I’ve always believed that Rumpelstiltskin was the one who gave Regina her power. I doubt she was born a witch and I’m pretty sure she’s human (hopefully). And I really like the theory of Regina’s mother being the Miller’s daughter. So, if we’re going to listen to that theory, then Regina’s rivalry with Rumpel was not something that she started, it was something her mother started. Looks like we have a multi-generational rivalry on our hands. π― π― π―

I agree. In fact, I don’t think Regina is royalty at all. From the looks of the behind the sceens photo and the theory of the Millers daughter, it appears that Regina was just an oridinary commoner.

We know that Rumpel took his magic from someone else and wasn’t born magical so that may also be the case for Regina. Maybe Henry’s father was king and Snow’s father took over the kingdom somehow.
March 1, 2012 at 2:56 pm #137998SlurpeezParticipantI think it’s interesting that in episode 2, Regina says to her father, Henry Sr:
Regina: But I can’t keep living like this. What Snow did to me, what she took from me. It’s eating me alive, Daddy. Her very existence mocks me. She must be punished.
Henry Sr: But, if the price is a hole that will never be filled, why do it? Stop worrying about Snow White, and start over. We can have a new life.
Regina: What kind of life? All I’ve worked for, all I’ve built will be gone. My power will disappear. They already think I’m nothing. How is it that not enacting the curse would cause Regina’s power to disappear? Her power must be something that she gained, and not something she was born with. It’s still not at all clear what her back story is, except to say that her mother, Cora, may have taught her magic.
Also, I think perhaps Cora could be the miller’s daughter who married the king who desired straw be turned to gold. That means Regina, the baby Rumple was supposed to take, would be royal, as indicated by the quote: “…the series will flash back to show Snow White as a little girl and the Evil Queen as a young princess living with her fairy-tale family before her heart turned bitter cold.” That means Regina was a young princess even before she married Snow White’s father, King Leopold.

March 1, 2012 at 4:19 pm #138001miaParticipantThat makes much more sense, than Regina being the miller’s daughter. I really like that thought, slurpeez.
The really interesting question β if this were the case β would be, why Regina has such a “close” relationship with Rumple. He’d have wanted her as a child for a reason, I wouldn’t want to have anything to do with that man, if it was me.
Another question that is raised in that case is, what could have happened to the kingdom? Henry Sr. would have to be a king, but he isn’t anymore when Regina becomes King Leopold’s wife.
Ok, bit far-fetched, but what if their kingdom β Henry Sr.’s in this scenario β was somehow lost to King Leopold because of some deal with Rumple?? βββ Ah, forget it, just remembered that Regina says that the apple tree is from her home and it doesn’t belong in the castle (ep. 11) β¦ Just because once I had a crazy idea. π
Anyway, they probably did loose the kingdom somehow. If she really was a young princess, her father must have been a King and he wouldn’t be in King Leopold’s castle, if he still was one.March 1, 2012 at 7:35 pm #138010hjbauParticipant@slurpeez108 wrote:

Like she lost her power with the people. She isn’t a queen anymore. I don’t think she is talking about her magical power, but about losing her kingdom.
