So we learned in this episode that Maleficent had cursed Aurora’s mother, Briar Rose, with the sleeping curse. But we never found out what originally happened between them, why was Mal mad at Briar Rose? There is an unfinished story here, that we don’t know the rest of yet.
Maleficent seemed angry at Briar Rose specifically, meaning she wasn’t just targeting her to punish King Stefan. She seemed more annoyed that Stefan showed up at all, as he just got in the way of her revenge.
So, what if Maleficent was originally in love with Briar Rose, who rejected her and chose Stefan instead? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, after all. And that would fit with her disgust at Briar Rose being woken by “King Stefan the square jawed”. She resents that Briar Rose fell in love with a hansom man, instead of with her.
And then later Maleficent hates Aurora, as a reminder of Briar Rose’s rejection.
This would also be an interesting parallel to Aurora being Mulan’s love. (Except Mulan is not evil.)

Until King Stefan the Square Jawed undid all my work with true love’s kiss.
What if … what if Mal suspected that Briar Rose really DID love her, and not King Stefan at all, and that she was only marrying him for his kingdom. And so the sleeping curse was some kind of test, that whoever could wake her up, either Maleficent or Stefan, would prove who Briar Rose truly loved?
And so what she resents most of all, is that Stefan can and did wake her up, proving that Briar Rose really did love him, and not Maleficent after all.
Now, maybe I’m taking this theory a little too far, as I’m not sure this part entirely fits with the quoted line. But it’s an interesting thought, anyway!

I like this theory. It is like the opposite of what happened in the live action movie.
Mal having put a sleeping curse of BR would be a pretty good reason to cut her out of her life, even if the two were once close friends. It would also explain why Mal became an addict: to cope with the loss of, not only her love, but also her friend."so there’s this new show….."

While I really like this theory and would be pleased to see ONCE finally present an LGBT relationship that didn’t feel like queer baiting with no fulfilment or follow through, the fact that no Briar Rose was ever cast and that Mal’s next episode centric 419 is probably how she birthed and lost Lily, I doubt we’re going to revisit this chapter in Mal’s history.
I *could* be done via exposition but the writing seems geared toward presenting Mal more as a mother who lost her child instead of focusing on whatever drove her to take down Briar Rose and Stefan
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"I agree that the writers seem to have little interest in continuing that part of the story, and they are currently focused elsewhere. But they dropped a few details, and left the rest up to our imagination. So it’s interesting to theorize about, even if they never go back to fill in the blanks.
And, this theory seems like just the right kind of twist. It takes the original story, and adds an element of real life, complicated, messy relationships. Which they like to do on this show. 🙂

I could have sworn I typed this already but here is the gist of what I said…

I noticed this too. Unlike the Disney movie, it seems like the history lies between Mal and Briar rather than Stefan, so naturally my first assumption (as with all OUAT villains) was that Mal was wronged with matters of the heart dealing with Briar. I think its completely possible they were together and Stefan somehow came between them or had Briar stray, got her pregnant, etc. I had a little theory about the whole situation but I cannot remember it for the life of me but I know it involved how when asked about Mal’s child’s father, A&E said “if there is a father” which COULD mean that Mal’s child has no father but actually has TWO MOTHERS!!!!!! How? Magic. Plot. Magical Plot Device. Usual OUAT things. But yeah. that’s the gist of what I was saying…. I think >>
I hope we do get to see the history between them, but I doubt it.
