I gotta say, that was not what I was expecting of that backstory. At what point does Cora learn more magic? Doesn’t she even say to him in Storybrooke, ‘No, I don’t know any memory spells, I only know what you taught me.’ Now that’s probably not entirely true, but I expected it to be at least remotely true! She can do A LOT of magic that doesn’t even seem to branch off from ripping out hearts and spinning gold, which are the only things he specifically taught her. He said he would teach her everything but it doesn’t seem like he had a chance. Wasn’t their courtship very very short?
I just find it hard to believe that after she broke up with him so harshly and TRICKED HIM GOOD WITH THAT DEAL! that he was ever around again to teach her more. Didn’t they sort of become half-way enemies?

Emma we can understand may have some magical ability born within her being the product a true love and all that. But Cora was just a random woman. She picked it up pretty easily apparently.
I agree that Rumple likely never taught her any more. But we know Cora had that “book” of spells. Maybe she learned much more from that. Good point though.

i agree. I was a little disappointed with the extreme ease it is for anyone to learn magic. As I was watching that scene (where Rumple was showing Cora how to spin straw into gold) I was curious if that was how Dark magic is learned. Drawing anger and humiliation and channeling that into your task produces magic.
That reminds me of “The Force”, in Star Wars. There are the Jedi – those who draw on the light side of the force. And the Sith – those who draw on the dark side of the force. The Sith draw their strength (which can be thought of as magic) from their passion for anger and hatred.
The only “good” magic we’ve seen requires Fairy Dust. (Or a wand.)

Maybe that was her sarcastic way of saying, “Dude are you serious, you have no idea how powerful I am.”
There had to have been at least a short passage of time between the proposal and the wedding day. Those royal shindigs don’t just organise themselves overnight. I suspect he was visiting her every night for a little while, and teaching her more things, and it’s during that time that he gave her the spell book to study.
March 11, 2013 at 2:50 pm #178989spinninggoldParticipantHmm, very good point. The average fairy tale engagement to marriage time is a week. So including the time spend in the tower, that’s two weeks tops. She couldn’t have learned much more then spin gold and learning to rip out hearts in that. Let alone fall head over heals with some sinester gold looking guy, that has a creepy view of the world enough want to run away with him…although… he is damn sexy. And let us not forget the book of spells she got from him. That sounds like something that takes time and effort, just as it did Regina. I always assumed he kept teaching her till Regina was born and then stopped because she made a trade for Regina.
So unless King Xavier somehow postponed the wedding to find a way to get rid of her, I don’t see how you could fit all that in such a short time.March 11, 2013 at 3:05 pm #178997riddleravenParticipantOhhh yeah. That book WAS Cora’s, wasn’t it? I just remembered the part where he gave it to Regina and I wondered when he would’ve gotten it back. But now I remember Regina(?) and definitely Snow saying that they’d seen Cora using it. I wish we’d gotten a glimpse of it in the episode then my mind could accept this and rest.
Maybe that was her sarcastic way of saying, “Dude are you serious, you have no idea how powerful I am.”
Yeah, that was implied at least. Her humility in that episode was fake from the beginning. And so CREEPY because of it! She does it well but you know you can’t trust it! That falsely sweet interaction of theirs with the kiss and everything, even after this episode still gives me the heebie-jeebies! Blech.
Great point about the dark side! I like that light magic comes from happy thoughts and dark magic comes from evil thoughts like blood lust. Yikes.
March 11, 2013 at 4:47 pm #179052MyrilParticipantIt’s hard to imagine, that Rumple came back to teach her more after what happened. On the other hand Rumple’s true goal always was to find Bae, and he followed that no matter what. So if Cora’s daughter was the one his glimpses into the future told him to be important and maybe the most likely to enact the curse for him he probably tried nevertheless to keep some influence on Cora, maybe tried a second time to somehow get a hand on Regina, before he succeeded later when she was about to marry King Leopold. I too was wondering about the book of spells, because Rumple said it was his, so he gave it to Cora. Then Regina secretely took it from Cora, after she had pushed her into the mirror Regina wanted to give it to Rumple, but Rumple talked her into keeping it and learn more magic. But when did Cora get the book and how? And Rumple did say, he had Regina in his arms, so there has to be more story (rewatching the second episode of this season, We are Both).
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯
March 11, 2013 at 4:52 pm #179056KebParticipantCora did talk about the deals she had to make–she may mean more than just this one. I expect there’s a LOT more history between Rumple and Cora, which shows him just how dangerous she is and leads to his “I won in the end” comment on Belle’s first date.

March 11, 2013 at 7:48 pm #179115MysteryKat25ParticipantHmm. Is it possible that after she married Henry and had Regina that Rumple went back into her life in some way. I maintain that the reason he asked for her child is that he saw at least enough into the future to know that it was her kid who enacts the dark curse. I guess he assumed that it was his kid or that he would be the one teaching her or something.
Henry knew later on because he tells Regina that a man from Cora’s past is the one she needed to see about learning magic, but didn’t Rumple once say that he knew Regina when she was “more portable”?? Doesn’t that mean that he came in to check on them at least once, and maybe taught Cora something new at that time / gave her the spellbook?
It would seem weird since he was so hurt but it’s either that or we just never saw him giving her the spellbook in and amongst her other short lessons and then the Regina line would still have to be after. Did he say he SAW her or HELD her when she was more portable? He could have sneaked in to watch at a royal event or something but I was thinking he said held. I remember the hand motions but can’t remember if it was to show she was a baby or if he really held her as one. I definitely need to do a season rewatch next hiatus to gear up for the finale.
