The Brothers Grimm were Snow White’s original tellers. Perhaps the authors only see bits and pieces and they do their best to connect the dots? As the stories pass down through the ages bits get rewritten?

That’s why it bugs me that August didn’t mention The Brothers Grimm but DID mention Disney. I guess it could be for time sake, but to not mention or even hint at them….it screams “hello! We are OUAT and we are owned by the Disney corporation!”

All of This.

I think the audience is assuming the ‘Walt’ mentioned is Disney, but it could be a totally different person.

And yet, the scene was less than complimentary about Disneyfication.

He is supposed to be neutral and just let stories unfold. The problem that the Apprentice had with the Author is that he was inserting himself into stories. Giving ‘characters’ information that they may not have learned naturally. Snow and Charming potentially may not have met the Apprentice if the Author hadn’t told them to go down that specific road but they still chose to take that road. The Author machinations don’t mean that they didn’t have free will. The fear in Snow’s heart gave her that bad vision. Charming didn’t have that vision. They could have not taken the egg. They could have told the Apprentice no. They could have told Maleficent what happened to the baby and that her friends were sent to another land.Basically, the Author was acting like a ‘Dungeon Master’ from a role playing game instead of the Brothers Grimm (neutral observer and recorder). But even in a role playing game, the players have free will. They just get put into situations by the DM. The DM doesn’t control what the players do.March 30, 2015 at 2:14 pm #300313MatthewPaulModeratorThis thought just occurred to me. Could the character of the Author be Adam and Eddy’s way of making fun of themselves? Think about it. They are literally the authors (writers) of the show, and they have to deal with fans who disagree with the choices they’ve made throughout the series. Maybe the Apprentice was representing the vocal part of the fanbase. The fans who will actually tell Adam, Eddy and the other writers “how dare you do so and so”, while the writers respond back with “it makes for a better story” or any other excuse to defend what they wrote. Patrick Fischler even reminds me a little of Eddy Kitsis, particularly the way they speak and their snarky attitude. lol! Perhaps they thought “a mischievous Author with a god complex actually would make for a fun antagonist!” Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but thought it would be fun to share anyway.

Yes, and I think this means that he’ll have very little on-screen time, because otherwise it’d be an in-joke that goes on too long.

But does it, does it really make for a better story? *looks at the ratings* Just sayin’. 😉 😈

March 30, 2015 at 3:10 pm #300323storybrookegirlParticipantI like that there have been multiple Authors. I like that their job was to document what happened. That feels like a shoutout to all the people in our world who have written fairy tales. That fits, it makes sense, it allowed them to sneak in a Walt Disney mention, and that’s all well and good for me.
See that actually bothered me because how does the Sorcerer have any influence in our world? He mentioned Walt, but then also “a man who watched shadows on a wall” is very clearly Plato and then there were “playwrights” It actually sounds like every Author was from our world….
This has got me thinking… It would totally make sense for every Author to be from our world, because this show is about fairy tales anyway, which are stories in our world. The other worlds we’ve seen from Jefferson’s hat are story settings in our world (Wonderland and Black-and-White Movie World where Frankenstein is from). So maybe our world is the “real” world or the highest world in a hierarchy of worlds, sort of, and every Author is from here and observes what’s happening in the other worlds.
Well, IF every Author is from our world, why was that particular Author in the EF? Here’s my new theory: The Author somehow accidentally ended up in the EF, which Authors were never meant to do, because once they got to a land without magic they could use magic to alter the stories, like we saw the recent Author doing. And maybe it was an accident, and the Author wanted to get back to our world, which is why he started messing around with people’s stories. The Author was writing a story to put everyone on a route that would cause him to be banished to the book, the dark curse to happen and the book to be taken to our world (his original world), and the door to be eventually opened so he could get back home to our world. That’s why he ran off so quickly when he got out, he had something to go back to!
This theory doesn’t necessarily imply that the Author planned on absolutely everything that happened along the way, like Gold trying to turn Emma dark or anything, but just that he ruined people’s stories enough and made sure someone in town knew that he was trapped in the book so that after the dark curse brought everyone to our world, they would set him free.
March 30, 2015 at 5:31 pm #300356BelleOfTheBallParticipantI have mixed feelings on the Author(s) reveal. I was surprised by the idea that there was more than one author throughout this story… kind of made the reveal of a random guy trapped in a book a little less exciting. It made me almost feel like I didn’t meet THE Author. But just A Author.i guess i was excited about the prospect of who this author could be, and now i feel like its just some guy rather than the possibility of a charcter or a real author. On the other hand, I loved the shout out and explinations to storytellers in our world that we know and love.
I think mostly the shout out to Authors in our world wasn’t so much of a timeline clue but just an “easter egg” of some famous writters as a tribute to their work.
I don’t know who I expected to jump from the book, but it wasn’t the mischievious man this guy seems to be. Should be interesting to see where they go with this and how much power they reallygive him to write futures and endings.
Perhaps his involvement in the Snowing story changed the original outcome of what would haved been if they just continued home. Sort of like the changes made to the book from when Emma and Hook interacted with Snowing of the past. Maybe he cant write anything other than what happens, but by involving himself in the story he can steer them one way or another to MAKE a good story.
