Tonight we got a bit of backstory on Merlin and the Dark One. Apparently the Dark One in the shiny mask took away the only woman Merlin ever loved.
Who was the woman?
Who was the Dark One?
And what did the Dark One do to the mysterious woman?
Also, now that Merlin has been officially revealed, what do you think of him and what little backstory we have?
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"I am convinced, especially with an upcoming title that Merlin’s first love and the Dark One we saw are both Nimue, who was Merlin’s love in Mort d’Arthur. (He chased her until she convinced him to teach her magic, and then, annoyed with his constant chasing, trapped him in a tree/under a rock with the magic she’d learned.)
I haven’t yet decided whether I think Nimue is the first Dark One or the second (who killed the first to gain his power), but especially the way Emma wielded both dark and light magic to get Merlin free makes me think that’s what we’re going to see in some way.

I LOVE HIM!!!!!! I find the lost love backstory a bit cliché. Well. REALLY CLICHE. But this seems to be the formula on this show. Lost love or missing/crazy/evil parentals..
But yeah, Merlin is already epic. Cant wait to see more.
Who was the Dark One?
Honestly… in knowing that merlin tied the darkness to him, I am guessing either 1) Someone that his love also loved and so tying the darkness to him was sort of a way to get rid of the competition (hey everyones got a dark side, right?) and so perhaps the dark one killed her or imprisoned her as a way of revenge. 2) Family. Some kind of crazy/evil family member of Merlins. 3) A close friend turned enemy. Literally the dark to Merlin’s light.
Who was the woman?
Lady Of The Lake? Black Fairy? Both?

This Merlin is interesting, but his backstory is pretty guessable.

I think this is the First Dark One. There’s a reason they put that person in a mask. There is a big reveal to be had later on. Nimue is the First Dark One and Merlin’s lost love and he couldn’t kill her because he loved her so much, but she couldn’t kill him either, so she turned him into a tree.

Nimue = Lady of the Lake in many versions. (Or A Lady of the Lake…at least one of them gets killed off in Mort D’Arthur, so…yanno. Following that timeline would be harder than Once’s I think.)

What confuses me is that the press release for 505 credited Guy Fauchon as “Vortigan”, and IMDB credits him as “First Dark One.” However, Vortigan’s name is never even said. Why would the press release even give him that specific name? Unless someone goofed and accidentally spoiled his identity in the press release.
